# Mountain Biking at Beitostølen — All 11 Trails in Trail Arena

Beitostølen Trail Arena is Norway's only full-scale mountain bike facility in the high mountains — 11 marked trails from 900 to 1350 masl, all framed by Jotunheimen as a backdrop. The trails are free to ride. The ski lift provides comfortable uplift when you want to ride down again.

## All 11 Trails — Complete Overview

### 🟢 1. Green 1 — Family Path Along the Mountain
**Difficulty:** Green (very easy)
**Terrain:** Wide, well-maintained path with fantastic views into the mountains
**Suited for:** Everyone, including children with little experience
**Tips:** Can be ridden in both directions. Works as an alternative to the walking and cycling path along FV51 — perfect for families wanting to avoid road traffic.

---

### 🟢 2. Garlirunden — Norway's Most Beautiful Beginner Forest Trail
**Length:** 3.6 km
**Difficulty:** Green (easy)
**Elevation profile:** Flat to gently rolling
**Terrain:** Berms, rollers and bridges built specifically for beginners
**Suited for:** Everyone — from age 6 and up, families, terrain beginners
**Strava link:** [Garlirunden on Trailguide](https://trailguide.net/#14/61.2635/8.8984)
**Tips:** Start at the Garli car park (follow signs from the village centre). "Perhaps Norway's most beautiful mountain bike offering for beginners" — and it holds true. The berms are well built, the rollers are fun, and the views are stunning. A great warm-up lap before picking up speed on the blue trails.

---

### 🟢 3. Grønnekinkampen — Natural Trail with a View
**Difficulty:** Green (easy)
**Terrain:** Natural trail along the mountain side
**Suited for:** Beginners and intermediates
**Warning:** There is a small crux (tricky section) near a stream close to the bottom — the very youngest children should wait until next year.
**Views:** Great views across the whole area from the trail.

---

### 🔵 5. Funduro Trail — Technical Descent You'll Want to Lap Again and Again
**Difficulty:** Blue (intermediate) with sections of red
**Terrain:** Fun technical descent designed to be lapped repeatedly with the lift
**Suited for:** Intermediates and experienced riders
**Strava record:** Available on Strava — can you beat it?
**Tips:** The hardest sections can be avoided with alternative lines. Combine with Blue Flow for a full half-day session.

---

### 🔵 6. Blue Flow — The Perfect Flow Trail Experience
**Difficulty:** Blue (intermediate)
**Terrain:** Purpose-built flow trail in the lift zone — berms, rollers and jumps
**Suited for:** Intermediates
**Tips:** Do a relaxed warm-up lap on Garlirunden or Green 1 before going full speed here. The trail is designed to be ridden fast when you hit the right line. Take the lift up after each descent.
**Season:** Normally opens the same day as the ski lift (check visitbeitostolen.no for opening date).

---

### 🔴 7. The 80/20 Trail — Enduro Track with National Championship History
**Difficulty:** Red (demanding)
**Terrain:** From the top of Knausen to the village — mostly descending, some traversing and a little climbing
**Length (estimated):** 3–4 km descent
**History:** Used during the national enduro league (80/20 series) event at Beitostølen in 2019. Refurbished in 2020.
**Suited for:** Experienced trail riders
**Tips:** Ride Blue Flow a couple of times as a warm-up. The 80/20 demands good technique through corners and rocky sections.

---

### 🔴 11. Red Rush — The Newest and Most Exciting Downhill Trail ⭐
**Difficulty:** Red (demanding)
**Terrain:** Focused on jumps and playfulness — tabletop jumps and large berms for an adrenaline-filled experience
**Strava/Trailguide:** [Red Rush on Trailguide (ID 11055)](https://trailguide.net/11055)
**Suited for:** Experienced trail riders
**What makes Red Rush special:** Unlike Blue Flow, you do **not need to brake** — you build your own speed by hitting the right line. The tabletop jumps give genuine airtime. The large berms let you choose your line based on speed. This is the trail that sets Beitostølen apart from other Norwegian facilities.
**Tips:** Ride Blue Flow twice as a warm-up so you know the feel. Red Rush is more forgiving than Tutjernkampen, but you MUST hit the lines to get the flow.

---

### ⚫ 8. Tutjern Alternative — Crux Hunting
**Difficulty:** Black (expert)
**Terrain:** Challenging alternative to Tutjernkampen with many small cruxes along the way
**Challenge:** Can you clean it without dabbing?
**Warning:** Many hikers on the trail — ride carefully and give plenty of warning.

---

### ⚫ 9. Tutjernkampen–Synberget — Alpine Riding on Rock
**Difficulty:** Black (expert)
**Terrain:** Up and down with lots of rock and multiple line choices — finishes in the birch forest
**Suited for:** Experienced technical riders
**Season:** Opens late (snow) — check visitbeitostolen.no. June/July is typical opening.
**Tips:** Take your time on the climb. The Synberget descent demands rock-solid line choice.

---

### ⚫ 10. Fremsida av Knausen — Steep and Technical
**Difficulty:** Black (expert)
**Terrain:** Steep and technical natural trail, completed in autumn 2020
**Suited for:** Experts with strong technical background
**Tips:** Often combined with the 80/20 trail for a full expert day.

## Wet Days — Which Trails Handle Rain?

Rain changes everything at Trail Arena. Some trails become slippery mud baths, others drain well and can be ridden hours after a shower. Know the difference — so you avoid destroying trails and your knees.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Garlirunden", value: "★★★★★", sub: "Gravel surface, drains excellently. Rideable 1–2 hours after rain." },
{ label: "Green 1", value: "★★★★★", sub: "Wide, firm road. Handles all weather." },
{ label: "Blue Flow", value: "★★★☆☆", sub: "Built berms hold up, but jumps get slippery. Reduce speed 30%." },
{ label: "Funduro", value: "★★☆☆☆", sub: "Dirt trail with roots — extremely slippery after rain. Wait at least 4 hours." },
{ label: "Red Rush", value: "★★★☆☆", sub: "Berms drain OK, but plateau jumps become unpredictable." },
  { label: "Tutjernkampen", value: "★★★★☆", sub: "Rocky surface drains well, but wet moss gives zero grip. Caution." }
]} columns={3} />

**Rules of thumb:**
- **Under 5 mm rain in last 2 hours:** Green trails and Garlirunden are fine. Blue Flow at reduced speed.
- **Over 5 mm or sustained rain:** Stick to Green 1 and Garlirunden. Everything else does more harm than good.
- **After extended rain (12+ hours):** Wait a full day. Dirt trails need time to dry.
- Check [yr.no/Beitostølen](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig-tabell/1-211102) before heading out — the rain radar shows if it's clearing.

## Bike Setup for Trail Arena — Tyres, Pressure and Suspension

The right setup makes the difference between flow and frustration. Trail Arena has varied terrain — from smooth gravel to technical rocky alpine — and one setup doesn't fit all.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Tyre width", value: "2.4–2.6\"", sub: "Narrower on green trails, wider on black. 2.5\" is the sweet spot." },
{ label: "Tyre pressure (tubeless)", value: "22–26 PSI", sub: "22 PSI on wet rock, 26 PSI on dry gravel. Adjust as you go." },
{ label: "Tyre pressure (tube)", value: "26–30 PSI", sub: "Slightly higher to avoid pinch flats in rocky sections." },
{ label: "Front suspension", value: "130–150 mm", sub: "120 mm works on green/blue. 150 mm for red/black." },
{ label: "Rear suspension", value: "120–140 mm", sub: "Hardtail works fine on green/blue. Full suspension recommended red+." },
  { label: "Dropper post", value: "Highly recommended", sub: "Essential from blue level up. Beginners can manage without." }
]} columns={3} />

**Tyre tread tips:**
- **Green trails + Garlirunden:** XC tyres with low profile work. You don't need aggressive knobs.
- **Blue Flow + Funduro:** Allround trail tyres (e.g. Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR II, Schwalbe Hans Dampf). Balance between grip and rolling resistance.
- **Red/black trails:** Aggressive enduro tyres with soft compound up front. Rocky sections demand grip.
- **Rental bikes:** lokal operatør and Intersport set up their bikes with trail tyres that work on everything. Ask about tyre pressure at pickup.
