## Why the South Route?

Most people cycle Mjølkevegen as a linear route from Vinstra to Gol (or vice versa) over 4–5 days. The South Route gives you the best of Stølsvidda in a self-contained weekend format — without needing a bus back to your car.

**Four things make the South Route unique:**

1. **Stølsvidda at the heart.** The South Route crosses the very core of Mjølkevegen — the wide mountain plateaus where thousands of cows and goats graze freely, and where active mountain farms still produce brown cheese and sour cream right in front of you.

2. **Langestølen and Nøsen.** Two stops that are legendary among local cyclists. Langestølen serves homemade waffles at a mountain farm that has been in operation for generations. Nøsen is a yoga and mountain hotel with a trampoline, sauna, and a beautiful beach by Reinsenn lake.

3. **A loop — your car is waiting.** You start and finish at Kamben. No bus, no transport logistics. Take the train from Oslo to Gol (2.5 hrs), take a taxi 20 minutes up to Kamben, start cycling the next morning.

4. **Family-friendly.** The terrain is gentle and manageable. By e-bike, children from age 8–10 can handle both days without any trouble.

## Getting to Kamben

**From Oslo:**
- NSB/Vy train from Oslo S to Gol station: **approx. 2.5 hours**, 150–280 NOK
- Taxi from Gol station to Kamben Høyfjellshotell: **approx. 20 minutes**, approx. 350–450 NOK (book in advance)
- Alternative: Valdresekspressen to Fagernes, then local bus towards Gol — check ruter.no

**By car:**
- From Oslo: Take the E16 via Hønefoss to Gol, then county road towards Kamben (approx. 2.5–3 hrs)
- Parking: Free parking at Kamben Høyfjellshotell during your stay

## Accommodation

| Place | Location | Phone | Price/night/person |
|-------|----------|-------|--------------------|
| **Kamben Høyfjellshotell** | Golsfjellet, 950 m.a.s.l. | **+47 32 07 39 00** | 800–1,200 NOK |
| **Gomobu Fjellstue** | Røn, Golsfjellet | **+47 61 35 77 10** | 600–900 NOK |

**Tip:** Book both places as early as possible — especially in July, capacity is limited. Kamben Høyfjellshotell has 34 rooms + 8 cabins. Gomobu Fjellstue is a classic mountain lodge with simple, authentic accommodation.

## 3-day itinerary

### Day 1 — Arrival at Kamben (no cycling)

Arrive at Kamben in the afternoon. Check in, explore the area, and enjoy dinner with panoramic views over Hallingdal from the hotel terrace.

Kamben sits at 950 m.a.s.l. and is already in the mountains. You can take an easy evening walk or cycle a short test ride on the gravel roads around the hotel. Batteries should be charged overnight.

---

### Day 2 — Kamben → Gomobu (36 km, 600 m elevation)

**Start:** Kamben Høyfjellshotell (950 m.a.s.l.)
**End:** Gomobu Fjellstue
**Time:** 4–6 hours (3–4 hours by e-bike)

This is the main day — the one that takes you into the heart of Stølsvidda. Start with breakfast at Kamben and allow plenty of time.

**The route:** From Kamben you follow gravel roads northward towards Stølsvidda. The terrain is rolling mountain with no steep climbs. You will encounter cows, goats, and sheep grazing freely along the road — take care and cycle slowly past them.

**Stop 1 — Langestølen (approx. km 10–12):**
One of Stølsvidda's most well-known mountain farms. Produces brown cheese and sour cream sold directly on site. Waffles served with sour cream are mandatory. Allow 30–45 minutes here.

**Stop 2 — Nøsen Yoga and Mountain Hotel (approx. km 18–20):**
Nøsen is a modern mountain hotel with a yoga studio, sauna and — curiously — a trampoline. There is also a beautiful beach at Reinsenn, a shallow mountain lake with a white sandy bottom, perfect for a midday swim. An exotic experience at 900 m.a.s.l. Café and food available.

**Stop 3 — Lisjordetstølen (approx. km 25):**
An active mountain farm with daily milking. Ask if you can watch the cows being milked — it is usually possible during the summer months. One of the best places on Stølsvidda to experience living mountain farm culture.

**End — Gomobu Fjellstue (approx. km 36):**
A classic mountain lodge in Mjølkevegen style. Hot food, good beer, and simple but comfortable rooms. Order dinner in advance — capacity is limited.

---

### Day 3 — Gomobu → Kamben (24 km, 400 m elevation)

**Start:** Gomobu Fjellstue
**End:** Kamben Høyfjellshotell
**Time:** 3–4 hours (2–3 hours by e-bike)

A shorter day — perfect for enjoying the return journey without any rush. The route is partly new terrain and partly parallel to yesterday's.

**Stop — Valtjernet (approx. km 10):**
A small mountain lake surrounded by bog and mountains. There is an easy 60 m climb up to the viewpoint Valtjernknatten — well worth taking. Panoramic views across the entire Stølsvidda and the mountains of Hemsedal.

**Possible extra stop — the milk truck:**
Early in the morning the milk truck drives around to the farms. Stop by a milk stand and enjoy lunch in the fresh mountain air — a classic Norwegian experience.

Arrive at Kamben in the early afternoon. Bag packed and ready for the train back to Oslo.

## What does it cost? DIY vs. package

| Item | DIY (per person, double room) | Norwaybybike package |
|------|-------------------------------|----------------------|
| Train Oslo–Gol return | 300–560 NOK | Included |
| Taxi Gol–Kamben return | 350–500 NOK | Included (bus) |
| Accommodation 2 nights | 1,400–2,100 NOK | Included |
| Food (3 days, all meals) | 500–800 NOK | Included (breakfast+lunch+dinner) |
| Bike rental (if needed) | 900–1,500 NOK | 1,500–1,900 NOK extra |
| **Total** | **approx. 2,550–5,460 NOK** | **7,800 NOK + any extra equipment** |

*Note: Norwaybybike's package includes all meals, luggage transfer, and full organisation — you pay for convenience. DIY gives more flexibility and costs 2,000–4,000 NOK less per person.*

## E-bike on the South Route

The South Route is one of the best e-bike options in Valdres for people who are not trained cyclists:

- 36 km on day 2 and 24 km on day 3 are well within a standard e-bike battery range
- Elevation gain is gradual, never steep — motor assistance is used efficiently
- Children from age 7–8 can manage the days on a regular children's bike with a little help
- Bike rental available from Kamben Høyfjellshotell (+47 32 07 39 00) and in Gol town centre

**Charging:** Kamben and Gomobu both offer charging. Check with both places when booking.

---

## Packing list for the South Route

**Must-have:**
- Wind jacket and rain jacket (Stølsvidda is unaffected by warm days in the valley)
- Extra food and water for day 2 — services are spread out
- Gravel-suitable bike (35mm+ tyres, no slicks)
- Phone with offline maps (download maps.me or Komoot in advance)

**Recommended:**
- Bikepacking bags or trail backpack (60–70 litres if you carry everything yourself)
- Swimming sandals for the Reinsenn beach
- Hat and gloves (even in July it can get cold)

**Luggage transfer:**
Gomobu Fjellstue (+47 61 35 77 10) can help with luggage transfer between Kamben and Gomobu. Call and arrange in advance.
