# 3 days in Valdres by bike

Three days is enough to experience the best Valdres has to offer from the saddle. This plan takes you from Fagernes through the Beitostølen area to Valdresflya — with climbs, gravel roads and mountain passes.

The plan is designed for cyclists with moderate fitness. You don't need to be a racer, but you should be comfortable spending 3–5 hours in the saddle per day.

## Who is this for?

- Cyclists with some experience (comfortable with 50–70 km per day)
- Gravel or road bike (not full-suspension MTB)
- Tyres: minimum 32 mm for day 2, ideally 35–40 mm
- Fitness: you should be able to ride 50 km with 500 hm without running out of energy

## Day 1: Fagernes → Beitostølen

**47 km · 680 hm · 3–4 hours · Asphalt**

Start early in Fagernes. Follow Rv51 northward along Slidrefjorden — the first 20 km are calm and flat, perfect for warming up. After Lomen the climb begins gradually toward Beitostølen.

### Route in detail

- **Km 0–20:** Flat along Slidrefjorden. Light traffic outside peak holiday season. Stop at Slidredomen (Norway's oldest stave church ruin) if you have time.
- **Km 20–35:** Moderate climb through Øystre Slidre. The landscape opens up.
- **Km 35–47:** Final climb into Beitostølen. The last 5 km will be felt in the legs, but the reward is a view over Jotunheimen.

### Practical

- **Start:** Fagernes town centre (parking near the station area)
- **Food en route:** Café in Lomen or pack a lunch
- **Accommodation:** Beitostølen — [Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen](/guider/overnatting-syklister-valdres) or a simpler option in the area
- **Tip:** Buy food for the evening in Fagernes — selection in Beitostølen is limited outside peak season

This stage corresponds to the route [Fagernes to Beitostølen](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen).

## Day 2: Panoramavegen and the Beitostølen area

**28–63 km · 320–840 hm · 2–5 hours · Gravel + asphalt**

Day 2 gives you two options based on fitness and weather.

### Option A: Panoramavegen (recommended)

**28 km · 320 hm · 2–3 hours · Gravel**

Panoramavegen between Vaset and Beitostølen is one of Valdres' finest gravel roads. Wide, well-maintained and with views in all directions. You can see Jotunheimen, Langsua and the valleys below.

The route starts from Beitostølen, goes to Vaset and back. You can also do it as a one-way ride with the bus back.

See [Panoramavegen](/ruter/panoramavegen) for details.

### Option B: Beitostølen Gravel Loop

**35 km · 520 hm · 2.5–4 hours · Gravel**

A loop from Beitostølen with more climbing and varied terrain. Suited for those who want a bit more challenge. See [Beitostølen Gravel Loop](/ruter/beitostolen-gravel-loop).

### Option A + B: Combine both

Got strong legs and a long day? Ride both for a total of approx. 63 km and 840 hm. Start early.

### Practical

- **Food:** Bring a packed lunch — there are few food stops along Panoramavegen
- **Accommodation:** Same as day 1 (Beitostølen) or move to Vaset for a change of scenery
- **Tip:** Check [the weather at yr.no](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig/1-211102/Norge/Innlandet/%C3%98ystre%20Slidre/Beitost%C3%B8len) — Panoramavegen is exposed and can be cold in headwinds

## Day 3: Valdresflya

**72 km · 1250 hm · 5–7 hours · Asphalt**

The queen stage. Valdresflya is Northern Europe's highest mountain pass with a paved road — 1389 moh at the highest point. The climb from Beitostølen is long but steady, and the reward is an experience unlike any other.

### Route in detail

- **Km 0–15:** From Beitostølen northward toward Bygdin. Moderate climb.
- **Km 15–30:** The gradient increases. You pass the treeline and the landscape turns arctic. Reindeer and snowdrifts are common even in July.
- **Km 30–36:** The summit — 1389 moh. Raubergstulen mountain lodge sits just below the top. Stop here for waffles and coffee.
- **Km 36–72:** Return via the same road — mostly downhill. You can alternatively continue down to Leirvassbu/Eidsbugarden for a spectacular one-way ride (requires transport back).

### Practical

- **Important:** Rv51 over Valdresflya is closed in winter. The road normally opens at the end of May — check [Statens vegvesen](https://www.vegvesen.no/) for status.
- **Food:** Raubergstulen mountain lodge (near the summit), or bring enough food and drink for 5–7 hours
- **Weather:** Temperature at the summit can be 10–15 degrees colder than in the valley. Keep a windproof jacket and arm warmers in your pockets
- **Tip:** Start early (08:00–09:00). Afternoon westerly winds make the climb harder

This stage follows the route [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya).

## Getting to Fagernes

- **Bus from Oslo:** Valdresekspressen (approx. 3.5 hours). Check whether the bus accepts bikes — a bike bag is often required
- **Car:** E16 from Oslo, approx. 3 hours. Free parking in Fagernes town centre
- **Train + bike:** Train to Gjøvik, cycle Rv33 onward to Valdres (approx. 90 km — for the very fit only)

Read more in [transport to Valdres](/guider/transport-oslo-valdres-sykkel).

## What to pack

- Windproof jacket (day 3 on the mountain)
- Arm warmers and leg warmers
- Minimum 2 bottles / 1.5 litres of fluid capacity
- Inner tube and tools (limited mobile coverage on Valdresflya)
- Cash or Vipps (some mountain lodges do not accept cards)

For a full packing list, see [the gear guide](/guider/sykkelvedlikehold-reparasjon-underveis).

## Budget — what does 3 days in Valdres cost?

A realistic cost breakdown per person, based on a moderate comfort level.

<StatGrid
  items={[
    { label: "Accommodation (2 nights)", value: "1600–3000 kr", sub: "Scandic/hotel approx. 1200–1500/night, Airbnb/cabin approx. 800–1000/night" },
    { label: "Food and drink", value: "600–1200 kr", sub: "Dinner out + packed lunch from the shop. Coop in Fagernes/Beitostølen" },
    { label: "Transport Oslo–Fagernes", value: "350–500 kr", sub: "Valdresekspressen one-way. Car: toll approx. 100 kr" },
    { label: "Bike rental (if needed)", value: "500–800 kr/day", sub: "lokal operatør. Own bike = 0 kr" },
    { label: "Café and mountain lodge", value: "200–400 kr", sub: "Waffles at Raubergstulen, coffee en route" },
    { label: "Total 3 days", value: "2750–5900 kr", sub: "Lowest with own bike and Airbnb, highest with rental and hotel" }
  ]}
/>

**Money-saving tips:** Shop for food in Fagernes before you set off — selection is largest there. A DNT hut near Valdresflya (day 3) can replace a hotel on night 2 for the adventurous. Packed lunches save 200–400 kr per day compared to cafés.

**The free version:** Tent, campfire food and your own bike. The right to roam allows you to pitch a tent at least 150 metres from buildings. Water is available in streams above the treeline. Total cost: under 500 kr (bus + some food).

## Plan B in bad weather — day by day

Valdres weather can change fast, especially in the mountains. Here are concrete alternatives for each day.

<StatGrid
  items={[
    { label: "Day 1: Rain in the valley", value: "Ride anyway", sub: "Fagernes–Beitostølen is low-lying (500–900 moh), a rain jacket will do. Alternative: bus to Beitostølen and save your legs" },
    { label: "Day 2: Fog on Panoramavegen", value: "Switch to valley route", sub: "Valdresbanen cycle path (15 km, flat) + Trail Arena forest trails. The trees provide shelter from wind and rain" },
    { label: "Day 3: Storm on Valdresflya", value: "No cycling over the mountain", sub: "Strong wind at 1389 moh is dangerous. Cycle Beitostølen–Vaset (15 km, gravel) or head indoors at Valdres Storhall" },
    { label: "Check the evening before", value: "yr.no + vegvesen.no", sub: "Wind forecast above 10 m/s on Valdresflya = change plan. Precipitation forecast above 10 mm = bring rain gear or swap the day" },
    { label: "Flexible order", value: "Swap day 2 and 3", sub: "If day 2 is glorious sunshine and day 3 looks wet — do Valdresflya on day 2 instead" },
    { label: "Worst case: 3 rainy days", value: "Farm visits + culture", sub: "Valdres Folkemuseum in Fagernes, stave churches, local food experiences. Not everything has to be cycling" }
  ]}
/>

**Rule of thumb:** Rain in the valley is fine — you get wet, but it is safe. Wind in the mountains is a different matter. Valdresflya in a storm is not just unpleasant, it is dangerous. Always have a valley-route backup plan ready.

## Adapt the plan

**Easier version:** Skip Valdresflya (day 3) and replace it with [Valdresbanen cycle path](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) (15 km, flat, asphalt) + exploration around Beitostølen.

**Harder version:** Add [Beitostølen–Slettefjell–Vaset](/ruter/beitostolen-slettefjell-vaset) (70 km, 1200 hm) on day 2 instead of Panoramavegen.

**With an e-bike:** The plan works well with an e-bike. Days 1 and 2 are manageable on a single charge. Day 3 (Valdresflya) requires a full battery — charge the night before. [Read more about e-biking in Valdres](/guider/elsykkel-valdres-guide).
