Tisleidalen cycling guide

Tisleidalen is Valdres' quiet valley gem — a long, narrow valley that cuts southwest from Fagernes and ends towards Golsfjellet. The river Tisle flows through birch forests and mountain farms, summer after summer, without too many people taking notice. That is exactly what makes it a great place to cycle.

What are the best cycling routes in Tisleidalen?

Tisleidalen has 10+ cycling routes from 4 to 51 km. Family favourites: Kjærlighetsstien (4 km return, car-free), Fløafjorden (22 km, easy), Pardisrunden (18 km, moderate). For experienced cyclists: Tansbergrunden (35 km, mountain pasture roads at 850–1000 m) and Tisleifjorden Rundt (38 km, gravel). Season May–October.

Tisleidalen: What makes it unique for cycling?

Tisleidalen is not Mjølkevegen. There is no national cycling route, no stage guides and no tourist brochures with big photos. It is just a valley with:

  • Quiet gravel roads with almost no car traffic
  • Forest tracks and mountain pasture roads from 400 to 1000 m elevation
  • Tisleifjorden — an elongated lake surrounded by forest and mountains
  • Bjørkestølen Camping and Noraker Gård with café along the route
  • Some of Valdres' best family routes without requiring mountain experience

Tisleidalen borders Golsfjellet to the southwest and is a natural starting point for routes towards Tisleifjorden and the high mountain pasture plateaus.

Routes in Tisleidalen

1. Kjærlighetsstien (4 km return, easy, family)

The shortest and most romantic route. From Ormhamar bridge you follow the Tisle river southward through birch forest to Bjørkestølen Camping. Flat, car-free and safe for children's bikes from age 3 and up. Perfect for an evening ride after dinner — return is the same way.

Start: Ormhamar bridge Elevation gain: 20 m Surface: Gravel and trail Suitable for: All ages, bike trailer, e-bike

2. Fløafjorden by bike (22 km, easy, family)

A simple and popular family trip from Tisleidalen northward along Fløafjorden. With a short detour to Noraker Gård — café and farm shop — midway along the route. Flat to gently rolling terrain.

Elevation gain: 120 m Surface: Tarmac and gravel Suitable for: Families, beginners, e-bike

See Fløafjorden Familierunde for the full route description.

3. Pardisrunden (18 km, moderate, gravel/family)

A pleasant and varied loop in hilly terrain with glimpses of water and forest in Tisleidalen. Partly fine gravel road, partly county road. Suitably challenging for families with some experience. Starts and ends in Tisleidalen village centre.

Elevation gain: 280 m Surface: Gravel and tarmac Suitable for: Families with trail experience, gravel bikes, e-bike

See Pardisrunden for the full route description.

4. Tisleifjorden Rundt (38 km, moderate, gravel)

Classic gravel loop around Tisleifjorden in the Golsfjellet area. The route crosses from Valdres into the Hallingdal side and offers fine viewpoints over the lake. Technically straightforward, but requires endurance over longer gravel sections.

Elevation gain: 380 m Surface: Gravel (majority) Suitable for: Gravel cyclists, experienced family cyclists

See Tisleifjorden Rundt for the full route description.

5. Tansbergrunden (35 km, moderate, gravel)

A beautiful but lesser-known loop on gently rolling mountain pasture roads from 850 to 1000 m elevation. Fine views towards Tisleifjorden and Golsfjellet. One of the Tisleidalen routes that gives you the mountain pasture landscape without the tough climbs from the valley floor.

Elevation gain: 500 m Surface: Mountain pasture road, gravel Suitable for: Experienced cyclists, gravel bikes, e-bike on flatter version

See Tansbergrunden for the full route description.

Season in Tisleidalen

Kjærlighetsstien is technically accessible year-round (low elevation, low snowfall).

Cycling with children in Tisleidalen — age-specific tips

Tisleidalen is one of the safest cycling areas in Valdres for children. But age determines what works.

The youngest (2–4 years): Kjærlighetsstien is the only one you need. Flat gravel road along the river, no cars, turning space at both ends. Bring a fishing rod — the Tisle has trout.

Active kids (5–7 years): The Fløafjorden route has a wide road and little traffic. Noraker Gård is the perfect halfway stop — ice cream and juice, toilets, and a farm to explore. Start early — children this age need breaks every 20 minutes.

Independent cyclists (8–11 years): Pardisrunden requires the child to handle some hills and 2–3 hours in the saddle. The reward is varied terrain and the feeling of having "done something real". Remember that 280 m spread over 18 km is never steep — just steadily uphill.

Teenagers (12+): Tisleifjorden Rundt is a proper day trip. Pack lunch, bring repair tools and let them navigate with a map. The pasture roads around the lake are car-free and give a real sense of achievement.

Tips for all ages:

  • Start from Fagernes and cycle into Tisleidalen — the return trip is then mostly downhill
  • Bjørkestølen Camping has a playground — perfect halfway break
  • Bring insect repellent in June–July, especially along the river

Combine Tisleidalen with Golsfjellet — 2-day plan

Tisleidalen sits naturally as the gateway to Golsfjellet. With two days you can cover both the valley floor and the highlands.

Day 1: Tisleidalen — getting to know the valley

Drive or cycle from Fagernes to Tisleidalen. Start with the Fløafjorden route (22 km) as a warm-up, or go straight to Pardisrunden (18 km) if you want more hilly terrain. End with Kjærlighetsstien as a relaxed evening ride. Overnight at Bjørkestølen Camping.

Day 2: Golsfjellet — up into the mountain pasture landscape

From Tisleidalen you climb southwest towards Golsfjellet and the pasture roads at 800–1000 m elevation. Tansbergrunden (35 km) gives the best ratio of effort to views. Alternatively: Tisleifjorden Rundt (38 km) which stays lower but offers a longer ride.

For families: Day 1 Kjærlighetsstien + Fløafjorden, Day 2 Pardisrunden. Total 44 km over two days — manageable for children aged 7+.

For experienced cyclists: Day 1 Pardisrunden + Tansbergrunden (53 km), Day 2 Golsfjellet routes (40–50 km). The mountain pasture landscape above the tree line on day 2 is the reward.

Transport: Fagernes has a bus service to Gol — you can put your bike on the bus and do one leg as a point-to-point.

Practical info

Accommodation: Bjørkestølen Camping in Tisleidalen. Cabin and hotel options in Fagernes.

Food en route: Noraker Gård with café along the Fløafjorden route. Remember to bring a packed lunch on the longer routes.

Fishing and swimming along the cycling routes

Tisleidalen is one of the few places in Valdres where you can combine cycling with real fishing without planning it as a separate expedition. The Tisle river runs through the entire valley, and Tisleifjorden lies to the south — both with trout and Arctic char.

Best fishing stops along the cycling routes:

  • Ormhamar bridge (Kjærlighetsstien): Calm pool just below the bridge — trout up to 30 cm. Perfect for children who want to try with bait and float while parents rest their legs.
  • The Noraker stretch (Fløafjorden route): The river flattens out here, and it is easy to reach the water's edge with your bike parked along the road. Fly fishing in June–August.
  • Tisleifjorden northern end (Tisleifjorden Rundt): Use the midway bike stop on the loop to cast out a spinner or two. Char in the depths, trout along the edges.

Swimming: The Tisle river has several natural bathing spots with sandy and gravel beds. The water is cold (12–16°C in July), but refreshing after a long ride. Tisleifjorden has shallower sections at the northern end that warm up more quickly. No designated bathing beaches — this is wild swimming.

Practical: Bring a collapsible fishing rod (telescopic model fits in a saddlebag) and a small selection of spinners and lures. Buy a fishing permit at inatur.no before the trip — there are no permit machines in Tisleidalen.

Autumn cycling in Tisleidalen — September and October

Tisleidalen in September is a different place from Tisleidalen in July. The birch forest glows gold, the tourists have gone home, and the air is clear enough to see the Jotunheimen peaks from the pasture roads. It is also the best time for photography — the light is lower and warmer from mid-September.

Why autumn is underrated:

  • No mosquitoes. After mid-August the mosquitoes are gone from the valley floor. That alone is reason enough.
  • Quieter roads. The summer holidays are over, the cabins are empty on weekdays, and you have the pasture roads to yourself.
  • Berry season. Blueberries along the pasture roads in September — bring a cup and pick as you go.
  • Clearer air. The summer haze is gone, and from Tansbergrunden (1000 m) you can see the Jotunheimen peaks sharply.

What to keep in mind:

  • Dress in layers. The morning can be 5°C with frost on the grass, but 14°C by midday in the sun. A windproof outer layer is more important than warmth.
  • Shorter days. In October the sun sets around 18:30. Start the long ride by 10:00 to have a comfortable margin.
  • Wet terrain. After overnight frost and morning dew, gravel roads can be slippery for the first few hours. Wide tyres (40 mm+) give better grip.
  • Pasture roads close. Tansbergrunden and the highest routes can get snow from mid-October. Check yr.no for the snow line.

Recommended autumn route: Fløafjorden (22 km) with lunch at Noraker Gård — the café stays open until the end of September. Bring packed food if you cycle in October. Or take Pardisrunden (18 km) early in the day to catch the morning light through the birch forest.

Surfaces and tyre choice — what Tisleidalen's roads require

Tisleidalen has four different surface types, and they alternate more often than you might expect. Your tyre choice determines how comfortable the ride will be — and whether you should attempt certain routes at all.

Tyre recommendations by route:

  • Kjærlighetsstien (4 km): Trail with roots and grass — works with 35 mm tyres, but 40 mm+ gives better comfort. Do not use narrow road tyres here.
  • Fløafjorden (22 km): Mix of tarmac and maintained gravel. 32–38 mm is fine. The most versatile surface in the valley.
  • Pardisrunden (18 km): Gravel dominates, but some sections have a looser surface after rain. 38–42 mm is safe. After heavy rainfall: add 2–3 PSI to avoid punctures in the puddles.
  • Tansbergrunden (35 km): Pasture roads above 850 m with stretches of loose gravel and some rocky sections. 40–45 mm minimum. With narrower tyres you lose grip in the steepest bends on the descent from 1000 m.
  • Tisleifjorden Rundt (38 km): Varies the most — from smooth tarmac to heavy gravel along the lake. 38–42 mm is ideal. The eastern side has the roughest surface.

After rain (first 24 hours): Gravel roads in Tisleidalen drain more slowly than high-mountain routes because the valley is flat with dense forest. Kjærlighetsstien along the river can have puddles for 1–2 days after heavy rain. The pasture roads up towards Tansbergrunden dry faster because they sit higher and have better runoff.

Studded tyres? Not necessary. Tisleidalen has no icing problems in season (May–October). Those who cycle in April may encounter icy patches in the shade — wide gravel tyres with low profile are sufficient.

Mobile coverage and safety — alone in the valley

Tisleidalen is quiet. That is the whole point. But "quiet" also means it can be hours between each car on the pasture roads, and mobile coverage is not as solid as in Fagernes town centre.

What you should do before cycling alone in Tisleidalen:

  1. Download offline maps. Google Maps or Mapy.cz — covers all pasture roads. Do it on WiFi in Fagernes before heading out.
  2. Tell someone. Let someone know which route you are taking and when you expect to be back. Bjørkestølen Camping or your accommodation host are good contacts.
  3. Emergency numbers. 113 (ambulance), 116 117 (out-of-hours doctor). Fagernes emergency clinic is nearest — 15–20 minutes by car from Tisleidalen village centre.
  4. Bring repair tools. The nearest bike workshop is in Fagernes. A puncture on Tansbergrunden means a 15 km walk if you have no inner tube and pump.

Wildlife you may encounter: Tisleidalen has moose, roe deer and fox — especially at dusk along the river. None are dangerous to cyclists, but moose in May–June with calves can be unpredictable. Keep your distance (50 m+), do not cycle between a cow and calf. Buzzards nest in the steeper hillsides — you can see them circling above the pasture roads on clear days.

Water and food: There are no shops in Tisleidalen. Noraker Gård has a café in season (June–September), but for the rest of the year the valley has no food service. Bring enough water and food for the whole trip. The Tisle river has drinkable water in the upper sections (above Bjørkestølen), but use a filter or boil it — grazing animals use the same water sources.
