What is The Challenge cycling route in Valdres, Norway?

The Challenge is one of Norway's most demanding and beautiful road cycling day rides — a 90 km loop from Beitostølen with approximately 2000 m of climbing. The route crosses several mountain passes with spectacular views of the Jotunheimen massif. Season: June–September. Recommended for experienced, fit cyclists only. On an e-bike, it becomes moderately challenging and suitable for most adults.

Why The Challenge is special

"Among Norway's most beautiful cycling tours" — that's the official description from Visit Valdres. It's not marketing fluff.

The Challenge strings together four of Valdres' finest mountain-road segments in a single loop from Beitostølen (900 m). You climb, descend into deep valleys, climb again. You ride through Jotunheimen's foothills with panoramic views of Galdhøpiggen (2469 m) and Glittertind (2452 m). You pass Eidsbugarden and the historic Bygdin boat route. Then you fight your way up climbs that deserve respect — and are rewarded with descents that make the suffering worthwhile.

This isn't a route for everyone. For those who are ready: unforgettable.

Route stats

The climbs

The Challenge is built around three to four major climbs depending on the variant you follow. Here's what you're in for:

Climb 1: Beitostølen → Tyinkrysset

A gradual but consistent climb out of the village. The gradient is manageable — 3–5% — but the accumulated metres add up. Views across Valdres open up behind you.

Length: ~20 km | Gain: 400–500 m | Character: Steady, predictable tarmac

Climb 2: Towards Eidsbugarden / Bygdin

Exposed and stunning. You ride along high-mountain lakes with unobstructed views into the Jotunheimen massif. Wind-exposed — check the forecast.

Length: 15–20 km | Gain: 300–400 m | Character: Open mountain landscape, can be brutal into a headwind

Climb 3: Return via Øystre Slidre

This hits you when your legs are empty. This is where The Challenge earns its name. Monitor your energy carefully — if you're running low, find the shorter way back early.

Length: 20–25 km of mixed climbing | Gain: 600–800 m total | Character: Rolling with sustained climbs

Note: The exact routing of The Challenge varies slightly — official Valdres maps show start options from Tyinkrysset, Eidsbugarden and Beitostølen, all giving 90 km variants with 2000 m+.

Season and weather

The Challenge runs June–September. Peak conditions: July and August.

PeriodConditions
Early JuneSome snow patches possible — check local reports
Late JuneGood start — cool and clear
July–AugustPrime season — best conditions
SeptemberBeautiful autumn colours, cooler
October+❌ Not recommended — short days and possible winter weather

Weather tips:

  • Temperature at the top is 8–12°C colder than in Beitostølen — bring a winter layer even in July
  • Check yr.no for Beitostølen and Valdresflye on the morning of your ride
  • Strong headwinds can turn this into an extreme challenge — plan your route direction around the forecast
  • 6–9 hours means you may experience all kinds of weather — waterproof jacket is non-negotiable

Kit list

For a route of this grade, you need:

Essential:

  • GPS/cycling computer with route loaded
  • At least 2 × 750 ml water bottles — refill at Eidsbugarden/Bygdin
  • Food for 6–9 hours: energy bars, gels, plus real food
  • Warm mid-layer and waterproof jacket
  • Fully charged phone — some sections have poor signal
  • Pump and puncture kit — being stranded alone in the mountains is not fun

Recommended:

  • Camera — you'll regret not having one
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses — high UV at altitude
  • Hi-vis or reflective layers — visibility in fog and on narrow mountain roads

On an e-bike

  • Most e-bikes carry 400–750 Wh — top up in Beitostølen and consider a power bank
