# Cycling Season in Valdres — Month by Month
When is the best time to cycle in Valdres? Here is the honest guide — what's open, what's closed, and what you can expect each month from May to October.
<AnswerBox question="When is the best time to cycle in Valdres?" answer="July and August are by far the best: all roads open, mountain dairies in full operation, food straight from the producers. June is good but Valdresflya opens late — check vegvesen.no. September is underrated: autumn colours, peace and quiet, few people. May is only for the lowlands around Fagernes." />
---
## May — the lowlands wake up
**What's open:** Fagernes, Leira, Etnedal, Sør-Aurdal. Valley roads and the lowlands.
**What's closed:** Valdresflya, mountain routes, Mjølkevegen. Mountain dairies have not started.
**Weather:** 5–15°C in the valley, cold in the mountains. Can be raw and wet.
**Recommended:** [Valdresbanen sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei), [Fløafjorden](/ruter/floafjorden), [Steinsetfjorden](/ruter/steinsetfjorden-rundt). Perfect for easy training rides without crowds. See [spring's first routes](/guider/varens-forste-sykkelruter-valdres) for a full overview.
**Don't expect:** Warm weather, open mountain roads, or anything to buy along the way.
---
## June — the season opens
**What's open:** Gradually — the lowlands from day one, mountain routes from the end of the month.
**Valdresflya:** Normally opens 25–30 May to 15 June. Check [vegvesen.no/trafikk](https://www.vegvesen.no/trafikk).
**Mjølkevegen:** Opens around 15 June in a normal year.
**Mountain dairies:** Start around midsummer (23 June) in lower-lying areas.
**Weather:** 10–20°C in the valley. Mountains: 5–15°C, night frost possible.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Early June", value: "Valley routes only", sub: "Fagernes, Leira, Etnedal" },
{ label: "Mid June", value: "Valdresflya opens", sub: "Check vegvesen.no" },
{ label: "Late June", value: "Mjølkevegen starts", sub: "Dairies begin" }
]} columns={3} />
**Tip:** June is quiet and beautiful. Ride [Fagernes to Beitostølen](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen) and enjoy having almost nobody else around.
---
## July — peak season
**Everything is open.** All roads, all trails, all mountain dairies, all mountain lodges.
**Weather:** 15–25°C in the valley. Mountains: 10–20°C. Rain and thunder can occur.
**Events:** Hallingrittet (early July, Golsfjellet), Valdresrittet (check date).
**Popular:** Book mountain lodges 4–6 weeks in advance. Beitostølen is fully booked during the holiday period.
**Dairy experience:** At its peak — brown cheese, waffles, sour cream from producers along Mjølkevegen.
**Recommended:** [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) (4–5 days), [Stølsviddarunden](/ruter/stolsviddarunden), [The Challenge](/ruter/the-challenge).
**Downside:** Crowded. Mountain lodges can be full. Book early.
---
## August — gold
Many experienced Valdres cyclists consider August the best month.
**Weather:** 12–22°C in the valley. Stable, but not oppressively hot.
**Mountain dairies:** Still in full operation until 20 September in most areas.
**Events:** Valdres Food Festival in Fagernes (typically the last weekend of August).
**Crowds:** Lower than July after 10 August — schools start.
**Recommended:** Everything. [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen), [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya), [Trail Arena at Beitostølen](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena).
**Sunset:** Starts getting early from mid-August — account for this on long stages.
---
## September — underrated
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Temperature", value: "5–15°C", sub: "Cool, but great cycling temperature" },
{ label: "Autumn colours", value: "Peak from 10 Sept", sub: "Birch and heather turn" },
{ label: "Crowds", value: "Minimal", sub: "Almost no tourists" },
{ label: "Mountain dairies", value: "Closing gradually", sub: "Most open until 20 Sept" }
]} columns={2} />
**What closes:**
- Mountain dairies: gradually from 10–30 September
- Valdresflya: normally closes in October, but snow can arrive in September
- Some mountain lodges reduce capacity after 1 September
**What's good:**
- Peace and quiet — you have the roads to yourself
- Autumn colours from 10 September — absolutely beautiful
- Cool temperature — perfect for hard climbing (Valdresflya, Slettefjellrunden)
- Affordable accommodation — low-season rates
**Recommended:** Challenging routes where summer heat has been a hindrance. [Trail Arena at Beitostølen](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena), [Bjødalsrunden](/ruter/bjodalsrunden), [The Challenge](/ruter/the-challenge).

## Weather — the difference between valley and mountain
What many people don't know about Valdres: the temperature difference between the valley floor and the high mountains can be 10–15°C on the same day. Fagernes sits at 360 m above sea level — Valdresflya at 1389 m. That means 20°C in Fagernes can be 8°C and windy at the top.
**Practical implication:** Always pack a windproof jacket and an extra layer, even on warm summer days, if the route goes above 900 m. Wind is the biggest challenge in the mountains — a south-westerly wind over Stølsvidda or Valdresflya can make 15°C feel like an effective 5°C.
**Rainfall:** Valdres is generally drier than the west coast of Norway, but July–August can bring heavy afternoon showers — especially in the mountains. Check [yr.no](https://www.yr.no) for location-specific hourly forecasts. The valleys (Fagernes, Etnedal, Aurdal) have more stable weather than the highland areas.
**Wind direction:** South-westerly winds are most common. Plan stages with the wind at your back where possible — on Mjølkevegen this means riding from west to east.
---
## Best season for your cycling style
Not all cycling suits every month. Here are the recommendations:
**Gravel and mountain gravel roads:** July–September. The gravel roads over Stølsvidda, Mjølkevegen and Panoramavegen require dry ground. June can work, but spring thaw makes gravel roads soft and demanding — especially above 800 m.
**Road cycling and tarmac:** June–September. The tarmac routes in the valley (Fagernes, Etnedal, Leira) are rideable from May, but the mountain roads (Valdresflya, E16 over Filefjell) don't open until June. September delivers empty tarmac and perfect climbing temperatures.
**Mountain biking / MTB:** July–September. The trails in [Beitostølen Trail Arena](/guider/terrengsykling-mtb-beitostolen) dry out from mid-June, but are best from July. Root sections and technical features require dry ground for good grip.
**E-bike:** June–September. Cold reduces battery capacity by 20–30% — plan shorter stages in June and September. In July–August batteries go further, and charging points along Mjølkevegen make multi-day trips easier.
**Family routes:** July–August. Warm enough for rest stops, dairy visits, swimming in mountain lakes. Shorter days from September make detours and breaks more difficult.
---
## October — for the hardy only
**What's open:** Fagernes, Leira, valley routes. That's it.
**What's closed:** Valdresflya, mountain routes, mountain dairies, most mountain lodges.
**Weather:** 2–10°C. Rain, snow on the high fells, frost at night.
**Recommended:** [Valdresbanen sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei), [Fløafjorden](/ruter/floafjorden), [Steinsetfjorden](/ruter/steinsetfjorden-rundt). Bring rain gear and warm clothes. See [autumn cycling in Valdres](/guider/hostsykling-valdres-guide) for more.
**Don't expect:** Open refreshment stops along the way.

## Booking calendar — book at the right time
The worst thing you can do is wait until June to book. Mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen have limited capacity, and bike rental during peak season is often sold out as early as May.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "January–March", value: "Book accommodation", sub: "Mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen and hotels in Beitostølen for July fill up early. Book now — cancellation is usually free." },
{ label: "April", value: "Book bike rental", sub: "lokal operatør Beitostølen and Fagernes have a limited number of rental bikes. E-bikes go first." },
{ label: "May", value: "Book package tours", sub: "Jotunheimen Travel and other operators set up group tours. Early booking gives better dates." },
{ label: "June", value: "Last chance for July", sub: "Most mountain lodges are fully booked for July now. August usually has availability. September always does." },
{ label: "July–August", value: "Book for autumn", sub: "Planning a September trip? Book now — some mountain lodges close early if demand is low." },
{ label: "September", value: "Book for next year", sub: "Happy with your trip? Book the same week next year directly with the mountain lodges — many offer a returning guest discount." }
]} columns={2} />
**Budget tip:** Sunday to Thursday is always cheaper and quieter than weekends. Starting a Mjølkevegen stage on Monday means you'll encounter fewer people on the popular stretches.

## Winter cycling — November to April
Valdres is not just a summer experience. Fat biking and studded-tyre cycling have grown significantly in recent years, and Valdres' groomed and ungroomed roads offer surprisingly good options.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Fat bike", value: "December–March", sub: "Groomed ski trails (by arrangement) and frozen gravel roads. Tyres 4.0–4.8 inches. Beitostølen has the best infrastructure." },
{ label: "Studded tyre road cycling", value: "November + April", sub: "The valley roads around Fagernes and Leira are ploughed year-round. Studded tyres on tarmac make for safe training." },
{ label: "Cross-country skiing + cycling", value: "April–May", sub: "Combo: cross-country skiing at Beitostølen in the morning, cycling in the valleys in the afternoon. See the ski-and-cycling guide." },
{ label: "Indoors", value: "All winter", sub: "Valdres Storhall in Leira has an indoor track. Turbo trainer with Zwift works everywhere." }
]} columns={2} />
**Important:** Fat biking on ski trails requires permission from the trail operator. Many municipalities allow it on specific stretches or at certain times — check local rules. Never cycle in freshly groomed tracks.
**Winter routes that work:** The Valdresbanen trail from Leira to Fagernes is ploughed and safe for traffic all winter. Rv51 has a wide road shoulder from Fagernes to Leira. Etnedal valley roads are quiet and ploughed.
