# Cycling along Begna — the valley routes in Valdres
Begna is the lifeblood of Valdres. From Filefjell in the north, the river flows 213 km southward through the entire valley — past Fagernes, through Aurdal and Bagn, and onward toward Sperillen. Along the river you'll find some of Valdres' best cycling routes: flat, accessible, and with water as a constant companion.
<AnswerBox question="Can you cycle along Begna in Valdres?" answer="Yes. National road 33 and county roads follow Begna through large parts of Valdres, from Fagernes via Aurdal to Bagn. In addition, the Valdresbanen cycle path (15 km asphalt) runs along the river between Leira and Fagernes — car-free and flat. In total there are over 80 km of cycling routes along or near Begna." />

## Why the Begna routes stand out
Most cycling routes in Valdres go upward — to the mountains, to summer farms, over high mountain passes. The Begna routes are the exception. Here you follow the valley, and the terrain is surprisingly flat by Valdres standards. That makes the routes perfect for:
- **Families** with children who can't manage 600 metres of climbing
- **Beginners** who want a safe first experience
- **Cyclists with heavy loads** on a bikepacking trip through Valdres
- **E-bike riders** who want to save battery for the mountain rides

## The best stretches along Begna
### Valdresbanen cycle path — Leira to Fagernes (15 km)
The old railway line between [Leira](/omrade/leira-nord-aurdal) and [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes) has been converted into a paved cycle path. Flat, car-free and well maintained. Perfect for children, wheelchair users and anyone who wants a relaxed ride along the river.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Distance", value: "15 km", sub: "One way, Leira–Fagernes" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "~50 hm", sub: "Almost entirely flat" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "Asphalt", sub: "Former railway line" },
{ label: "Suitable for", value: "Everyone", sub: "Children, e-bike, wheelchair" }
]} columns={2} />
Start in Leira and cycle northward toward Fagernes. Along the way you pass Høljarast bridge and get views over the river. In Fagernes you can take a break at Scandic Valdres or grab an ice cream at the shopping centre before turning back — or continuing onward.
### Fagernes — Aurdal along Rv33 (12 km)
From Fagernes heading south, Rv33 follows Begna through agricultural landscape. The road carries some traffic, but is wide and clear. The stretch is flat with gentle rolling and gives you views over the river and the green meadows along the valley floor.
Stop at [Aurdal](/omrade/aurdal) and explore Slidrefjorden — the lake where Begna widens. [Slidrefjorden round trip](/ruter/slidrefjorden-rundt) (32 km road cycling) is a natural extension.
### Aurdal — Bagn through Sør-Aurdal (20 km)
Further south the valley narrows and the forest thickens. The stretch between Aurdal and Bagn passes through [Sør-Aurdal](/omrade/sor-aurdal) — a quiet area with little traffic. From Bagn you can take the [Bagn–Reinli round trip](/ruter/bagn-reinli-rundtur) (24 km gravel) up into the hills for a bit more challenge.

## Day trip suggestion: the Begna valley in one day
For a complete day ride along Begna we recommend this route:
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Start", value: "Leira", sub: "Parking at the old station" },
{ label: "Finish", value: "Bagn", sub: "Return by bus or pick-up" },
{ label: "Total distance", value: "~47 km", sub: "Leira → Fagernes → Aurdal → Bagn" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "~200 hm", sub: "Mostly downhill/flat" },
{ label: "Time", value: "3–5 hours", sub: "Depending on breaks" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "Asphalt + road", sub: "Cycle path + Rv33" }
]} columns={3} />
**Tip:** Cycle from north to south (Leira → Bagn). The river flows that way, and you get a gentle downhill gradient throughout the valley. Take the bus back — Valdresekspressen stops in Bagn and Fagernes.

## Gravel alternatives along Begna
Want to get off the tarmac? Several gravel roads follow Begna on the western side, away from motor traffic:
- **Leirskogen–Ulnes gravel road** (west of Slidrefjorden) — quiet gravel road through agricultural landscape, approx. 10 km
- **The Hedalen road from Bagn** — Rv243 toward Hedalen follows the tributary river Urula westward, gravel sections and minimal traffic
- **Nordre Fjellstølrunden** from [Sør-Aurdal](/omrade/sor-aurdal) — 28 km gravel starting at Begna and climbing to the mountain farms
Check [Mountain farm roads by bike](/guider/stolsveier-gravel-valdres) for more gravel alternatives in Valdres.

## Practical info
**Season:** The Begna routes are among the first to become snow-free in Valdres. Valdresbanen cycle path is normally clear from the end of April. The roads along the valley are rideable from early May.
**Transport:** Valdresekspressen (bus Oslo–Fagernes) takes bikes for a fee. The train to Gjøvik plus bus to Fagernes is an alternative. From Bagn there are buses back to Fagernes several times daily.
**Food and breaks:** Fagernes town centre has shops, cafés and petrol stations. In Aurdal there is a Joker grocery store. Bagn has a grocery store and café. Along Valdresbanen cycle path there are benches and rest areas, but no food service.
**Accommodation:** For multi-day trips along Begna you can stay overnight in Fagernes (Scandic Valdres, camping) or Bagn (camping). See [accommodation for cyclists](/guider/overnatting-syklister-valdres) for a full overview.

## Spring and autumn — Begna when the mountains are closed
The Begna routes have a unique advantage: they are rideable long before and after the high mountain routes open. While Mjølkevegen and Valdresflya lie under snow until mid-June, you can cycle along Begna from the end of April.
**Spring (April–May):** Valdresbanen cycle path is normally snow-free by the last week of April. Rv33 between Fagernes and Bagn is clear even earlier. Temperatures are around 5–12°C — dress in layers and bring a windbreaker. The river is at its wildest with spring flooding, and birdlife along the banks is at its peak. Great cormorant, white-throated dipper and mallard are regular companions.
**Autumn (September–October):** The Begna valley is spectacular in autumn colours. The birch forest along the river glows yellow from mid-September. Less traffic, quieter roads and 8–15°C make this perfect cycling temperature. Daylight shrinks — start early and have lights on your bike from mid-September.
**Practical:** Check [yr.no for Fagernes](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig/1-70968/Norge/Innlandet/Nord-Aurdal/Fagernes) for updated weather. Shops and cafés in Fagernes are open year-round, but summer cafés along the route close in September.

## With children along Begna — age guide
The Begna routes are among the most child-friendly in all of Valdres. Here are specific recommendations by age:
**0–4 years (bike trailer/cargo):** Valdresbanen cycle path is the only route we recommend — 15 km of flat asphalt with no motor traffic. The smooth surface works well for trailers. Turn around when the child has had enough, not at the end.
**5–8 years (own bike, short rides):** Start with Valdresbanen (part of it — 5–8 km is enough). Gradually extend to the flat section between Fagernes and Lomen. Avoid Rv33 — too much traffic for this age group.
**9–12 years (longer rides, some climbing):** The full Valdresbanen out and back (30 km) is a good day challenge. Or combine with [Aurdal family loop](/ruter/aurdal-familierunde) (12 km) for some variety. Children in this age group can handle light gravel sections.
**13+ (teenagers):** The entire Begna valley from Leira to Bagn (47 km) is realistic on a long day. See [cycling with teenagers](/guider/sykling-valdres-tenaaringer-ungdom) for motivation tips. The gravel variant via Leirskogen–Ulnes adds extra adventure.
**All ages:** Bring swimwear in summer — Begna has several good swimming spots between Fagernes and Aurdal. Check water temperature locally; the river is cold until late July.

## Combine the Begna routes with mountain experiences
The Begna valley works as a base for rides up into the heights. Cycle along the river in the morning, and take a mountain ride in the afternoon:
- From **Fagernes**: [Fagernes to Beitostølen](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen) (47 km road, 800 hm) — the classic northward
- From **Aurdal**: Up to [Slidre-dalen](/omrade/slidre-dalen) and Valdres' stave churches — see the [stave church guide](/guider/stavkirkene-valdres-sykkelguide)
- From **Bagn**: [Bagn–Reinli round trip](/ruter/bagn-reinli-rundtur) (24 km gravel) or continue southward toward Hedalen
Begna connects Valdres. Whether you follow the river all the way or use it as a base for mountain rides — this is the heart of valley cycling in Valdres.

## Photo stops and natural highlights along Begna
Begna is not just a transport corridor — the river offers some of Valdres' finest natural moments when you're on a bike. Here are the stops you shouldn't cycle past:

{ label: "Bagn bridge", value: "Southern endpoint", sub: "Historic crossing point — Begna is deep and still here, anglers along the banks" }
]} columns={2} />
**Birdlife:** White-throated dipper nests along Begna from Leira to Bagn — listen for the metallic song from rocks in mid-current. Grey wagtail and great cormorant are common from May. Black-throated diver can be seen on Strandefjorden early morning in June–August.
**Evening light:** Cycle northward from Bagn in the evening sun (June–July) — the valley catches the light and the river mirror turns golden from around 8 pm. Best photo stretch: Aurdal–Lomen where the road curves tight along the water.

## Bike service and emergency points along Begna
The Begna valley is not wilderness — you are never far from help. But it pays to know what is where.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Fagernes town centre", value: "Bike shop + stores", sub: "Intersport/sport — tubes, tyres, basic servicing. Pharmacy, Kiwi, Shell" },
{ label: "Valdresbanen cycle path", value: "No services", sub: "15 km without a shop. Bring drinks and a spare tube. Mobile coverage the whole way" },
{ label: "Aurdal", value: "Joker grocery store", sub: "Basic food shop. No bike workshop — bring your own tools" },
{ label: "Bagn", value: "Grocery store + petrol station", sub: "Coop Prix, petrol station with air. Bus back to Fagernes" }
]} columns={2} />
**Punctures along Begna:** The surface is consistently good — asphalt on Valdresbanen, road standard on Rv33. The risk is low, but bring a spare tube and pump. The nearest sports shop is always Fagernes.
**Emergency numbers:** 113 (ambulance), 112 (police). Mobile coverage is good along the entire Begna valley — Telenor and Telia cover continuously from Leira to Bagn. Out-of-hours medical: call the GP surgery in Fagernes during opening hours, 116 117 outside opening hours.
**Bus as a backup:** Valdresekspressen stops in Fagernes and Bagn. Check [entur.no](https://entur.no) for timetables. The bus takes bikes, but space is limited — let the driver know when boarding.
Car-free along Begna — train, bus and cycling without a car
The Begna valley is one of the easiest places in Valdres to explore without a car. The infrastructure exists — you just need to put it together.
From Oslo to Fagernes: Valdresekspressen (bus) runs direct from Oslo Bus Terminal to Fagernes, approximately 3.5 hours. The bus carries bikes in the luggage compartment — let them know when booking or at departure. Alternatively: train to Gjøvik (2 hours), then local bus Gjøvik–Fagernes (approximately 2 hours). The train has dedicated bike spaces in selected coaches — book via vy.no.
Along Begna without a car: Valdresekspressen stops at Fagernes, Aurdal and Bagn. Cycle one way along the river and take the bus back. The logical direction is northward from Bagn to Fagernes — you ride with a gentle downhill gradient and have bus access at both ends.
Multi-day car-free itinerary: Day 1: Bus Oslo–Bagn. Cycle Bagn–Aurdal (20 km). Overnight. Day 2: Cycle Aurdal–Fagernes (15 km) via Valdresbanen cycling path. Overnight Fagernes. Day 3: Day trip from Fagernes toward Slidrefjorden or northward. Bus home.
Tip: Download offline timetables from Innlandstrafikk/Entur. Mobile coverage is good along all of Begna, but bus departures are infrequent — miss your bus and you'll wait a long time.
Fishing stops along Begna — combine rod and bike
Begna is one of Norway's finest trout rivers, and cycling is the perfect way to move between fishing spots. You reach stretches that others can't be bothered to walk to — without needing a car.
What's in the river: Brown trout is the main species in Begna. Grayling can be found in calmer sections from Aurdal southward. Pike occurs in Strandefjorden and the slow-flowing stretches.
Fishing permits: Permits for Begna are sold digitally via iNatur.no or at Kiwi/Shell in Fagernes. The permit covers specific river sections — check exactly which zone you need. Trout season is normally 1 June – 15 September.
Practical: Bring a packable rod (4-piece) in a bike bag or strapped to the frame. Fly or spinner both work. Begna isn't wide — you don't need to wade deep. Weight limit: rod tube + fly box weighs under 400 g.
Combination trip: Cycle from Leira to Aurdal (25 km), fish 2–3 hours at Høljarast or downstream of Fagernes, cycle on to Fagernes for overnight. Total time: 6–7 hours with relaxed breaks.
