<AnswerBox
question="Is Sør-Aurdal good for cycling?"
answer="Yes — Sør-Aurdal is Valdres' quietest and least-visited cycling area. Three marked routes from Bagn and Tisleidalen: easy family loop (18 km, 100 hm), moderate gravel (28 km, 560 hm) and demanding adventure (36 km, 720 hm). Quiet forest roads, almost no other cyclists, Bagn stave church and direct access via Rv35 from Hønefoss."
/>
Sør-Aurdal is the Valdres municipality most people drive through without stopping. That's a mistake — but a mistake that keeps it quiet and pleasant here, the way most places you actually want to cycle tend to be.
While Beitostølen has tourist buses and Golsfjellet has hundreds of marked kilometres, Sør-Aurdal has something harder to find: genuine silence. Gravel roads through pine forest where you meet no one. Tisleidalen opening up between mountain slopes. And Hølervass like a mirror on fine-weather days.
It's not a place for those who want variety and cafés along the way. But it's one of the best places in Valdres for those who want to cycle without being disturbed.

**Families and beginners:** Hølervassrunden is genuinely family-friendly — flat, quiet and free of traffic. Children from age 7–8 handle it with ease.
**Gravel enthusiasts seeking solitude:** Nordre Fjellstølrunden and Bjødalsrunden give you terrain and elevation without the crowds. Routes that feel discovered, not busy.
**Road-trippers from Hønefoss and Ringerike:** Via Rv35, Bagn is only about 1.5 hours from Hønefoss. The closest cycling entry point into Valdres for many coming from the south side of the mountains.

## Cycling routes in Sør-Aurdal
### [Hølervassrunden](/ruter/holervassrunden) — 18 km | Easy | Family
The easiest route in Sør-Aurdal and one of the quietest in all of Valdres. Start from Bagn, follow the gravel roads along Hølervass and back through calm pine forest. Just 100 hm of climbing over 18 km — which is to say, almost nothing.
Hølervass is a small mountain lake with still water and beautiful light in the morning. There are no cafés along the way, no refreshment stops — bring a thermos and packed lunch. That is, in fact, the point.
**Time:** 1.5–2.5 hours
**Season:** May–October
**Start:** Bagn town centre
**E-bike:** Completely straightforward for everyone
**Best for:** Families with children from age 7–8, beginners, active rest days
---
### [Nordre Fjellstølrunden](/ruter/nordre-fjellstolrunden) — 28 km | Moderate | Gravel
From Tisleidalen up to the northern mountain summer farms in Sør-Aurdal — 560 hm over 28 km on gravel and forest road. The route alternates between dense spruce, birch groves and open mountain sections with long views.
Two possible starting points: Tisleidalen or Nordre Fjellstølen. No refreshment stops — bring food and water. The trails see little traffic from other cyclists, and you'll often encounter more sheep than riders in the upper sections.
**Time:** 3–4 hours
**Season:** June–September
**Start:** Tisleidalen or Nordre Fjellstølen
**E-bike:** Easy for anyone of average fitness
**Best for:** Gravel enthusiasts, those seeking solitude, nature experiences
---
### [Bjødalsrunden](/ruter/bjodalsrunden) — 36 km | Demanding | Gravel
Sør-Aurdal's toughest route is for those who want something to test themselves against. 36 km from Tisleidalen with 720 hm of climbing, technical sections and deep forests that open out toward the high mountain plateau. The final section requires a robust gravel bike or full-suspension MTB — wet conditions can bring surprises.
There's no getting around it: this is demanding. But the reward is a Valdres you rarely see. No cosy mountain lodges, no branded signage — just terrain and views.
**Time:** 4–6 hours
**Season:** June–September
**Start:** Tisleidalen, Sør-Aurdal
**E-bike:** Moderately demanding — suited for adults in good shape
**Best for:** Experienced gravel and MTB cyclists, adventure seekers

## Cycling to Bagn stave church
<AnswerBox
question="Is Bagn stave church close to the cycling routes?"
answer="Yes — Bagn stave church is located in Bagn town centre, right at the starting point for Hølervassrunden. The stave church dates from the 12th century and is one of the best preserved in Valdres. Open for visits during the summer season, usually June–August. Free to view from the outside year-round."
/>
Bagn stave church dates from the 12th century and sits in the middle of Bagn town centre. You pass it regardless when starting Hølervassrunden from here — worth a five-minute stop. The church is one of the many cultural heritage points along [Slidre-Lomen Kulturvei](/ruter/slidre-lomen-kulturvei) further north, but Bagn stave church belongs here, in the southern corner of Valdres.

## Tisleidalen — the cycling heartland of Sør-Aurdal
Tisleidalen is the wide valley that stretches from Bagn northward through Sør-Aurdal. The gravel roads along the river are the starting point for Nordre Fjellstølrunden and Bjødalsrunden, and the valley itself is flat and accessible.
Unlike the Valdresbanen cycle path [further north](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei), Tisleidalen is not maintained as a family cycling trail — but the gravel roads are rideable for all bike types and see little car traffic.

## Sør-Aurdal vs. other Valdres areas
Sør-Aurdal differs from the better-known cycling areas in Valdres:
- **Vs. Beitostølen:** No lifts, no trail arena, no resort. In return: complete peace and lower demands on your wallet.
- **Vs. Golsfjellet:** Golsfjellet has nine well-marked routes and a train from Oslo. Sør-Aurdal has three routes and car-dependent access — but much quieter and more remote.
- **Vs. Vaset:** Vaset and Panoramavegen ([read more](/artikler/2026-03-08-vaset-panoramavegen-sykkelguide)) offer more alpine scenery and more routes. Sør-Aurdal is greener and lower-lying.
Choose Sør-Aurdal when you want to cycle without an audience.
