<AnswerBox
question="Is Valdres or Telemark better for cycling?"
answer="Valdres is best for gravel and mountain cycling — with Mjølkevegen (250 km), 360+ marked routes and Beitostølen Trail Arena. Telemark suits leisurely canal cycling along Telemarkskanalen and demanding road cycling around Gaustatoppen. Valdres has a wider range of routes, Telemark has a lower threshold for beginners."

## Two destinations, completely different character
Valdres and Telemark are both within a day's drive of Oslo, but offer vastly different cycling experiences. Valdres is mountains, mountain-farm tracks and gravel at scale. Telemark is canal, industrial history and steep valleys with climbing. The choice depends on what kind of trip you're looking for.
## Gravel — Valdres wins clearly
Valdres has over 360 cycling routes — including 144 gravel routes. Mjølkevegen alone is 230 km of continuous gravel from Vinstra to Gol, with accommodation at mountain lodges along the entire route. On top of that, hundreds of farm tracks offer everything from relaxed family rides to demanding high-mountain traverses above 1000 m.
Telemark has gravel in the Lifjell area and around Rjukan, but nothing close to Valdres' scale. You'll find pleasant day rides on gravel, but no long-distance routes on a par with Mjølkevegen.
**Gravel verdict:** Valdres for serious riding. Telemark for a pleasant day trip.
## Road cycling — similar standard, different profile

Valdresflya is one of Norway's most spectacular cycling climbs — 22 km from Beitostølen up to 1389 m with views over Jotunheimen. Panoramavegen and Rv51 offer long, continuous ascents through magnificent mountain scenery.
Telemark offers the Gaustatoppen climb from Rjukan — steep and intense with industrial history as a backdrop. The road up to Gaustablikk is shorter but steeper than Valdresflya. You also have fine road routes along Tinnsjøen and through Vest-Telemark.
**Road verdict:** Valdres for long mountain passes. Telemark for short, steep climbs.
## MTB — Valdres has dedicated infrastructure
Beitostølen Trail Arena is Valdres' MTB hub with marked trails across multiple difficulty levels — from family-friendly loops to demanding technical terrain. The area around Fagernes and Aurdal also has good trails through birch forest and along hillsides.
Telemark has mountain biking in the Lifjell area near Bø and around Gaustablikk, but without the same organised trail network. Vrådal and Dalen have some natural trails, but you'll need to find them yourself.
**MTB verdict:** Valdres for organised trail riding. Telemark for independent explorers.
## Family cycling — Telemark has the canal
Here Telemark has a genuine advantage. The Telemarkskanalen cycling route follows the canal from Skien to Dalen — relatively flat, culturally rich, and with the option to take the canal boat for part of the stretch. Perfect for children and cyclists who don't want elevation gain.
Valdres has many family routes — 70 in the route database — but the terrain is rarely completely flat. The Mjølkevegen family version and routes along Slidrefjorden are good alternatives, but you'll get more elevation than along the canal.
**Family verdict:** Telemark for flat canal cycling. Valdres for family rides with a bit more challenge.
## Logistics and accessibility
**From Oslo:**
- Valdres (Fagernes): 3 hours by car, bus via Valdresekspressen
- Telemark (Rjukan): 2.5 hours by car, bus via Notodden
- Telemark (Skien): 2 hours by car, train from Oslo S
**Accommodation:**
Valdres has a good network of mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen, plus hotels in Fagernes and Beitostølen. Telemark has accommodation in Rjukan, Dalen, Bø and along Telemarkskanalen — but fewer cycling-specific options.
**Bike rental:**
Both destinations have bike rental, but Valdres has more operators covering gravel, e-bike and MTB. In Telemark rental is more limited — check locally.
## Season
Valdres' high-mountain routes (Valdresflya, Mjølkevegen) typically open in June and close in September–October. Valley routes are accessible from May.
Telemark has lower altitudes and a milder climate — you can cycle along Telemarkskanalen from April, and the Gaustatoppen area is accessible from May to October.
## Can you combine both?
Absolutely. A week's cycling holiday can start with 3–4 days of gravel and mountains in Valdres, then drive to Rjukan (3.5 hours) for climbing up towards Gaustatoppen and a day along Telemarkskanalen. You get both mountain gravel and canal culture.
## Weather and climate — two sides of Southern Norway
Valdres and Telemark have surprisingly different climate profiles, even though the distance between them isn't great.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Valdres — precipitation", value: "600–800 mm/year", sub: "Inland climate, drier air" },
{ label: "Telemark — precipitation", value: "800–1200 mm/year", sub: "More coastal influence in the east" },
{ label: "Valdres — summer temperature", value: "15–22 °C", sub: "Cooler at altitude" },
{ label: "Telemark — summer temperature", value: "17–25 °C", sub: "Warmer in the valleys" },
{ label: "Valdres — altitude", value: "360–1389 m", sub: "Large variations" },
{ label: "Telemark — altitude", value: "0–1100 m", sub: "Lower average elevation" }
]} columns={3} />
Valdres typically has an inland climate — dry, stable summer days with cool nights. High-mountain routes above 1000 m can have cold weather even in July. Bring a windproof jacket and wool even in peak season.
Telemark is more coastal-influenced in the eastern parts, with warmer valleys and more rainfall. Vest-Telemark (Rjukan, Vinje) is more similar to Valdres climatically. Check [yr.no](https://www.yr.no) for both destinations — differences can be significant day to day.
## Weekend plan — combine Valdres and Telemark
A long weekend (Thursday–Sunday) gives you time to sample both:
**Thursday:** Drive to Fagernes (3 hours from Oslo). Afternoon ride along Valdresbanen cycling path — car-free tarmac, perfect warm-up.
**Friday:** Full day in Valdres. Gravel over Stølsvidda or road cycling to Beitostølen. Overnight in Fagernes or Beitostølen.
**Saturday:** Drive to Rjukan (3.5 hours). Afternoon climb up towards Gaustablikk — 950 hm in under 20 km. Overnight in Rjukan.
**Sunday:** Cycle along Tinnsjøen or start on Telemarkskanalen towards Notodden. Return to Oslo via E134 (2.5 hours).
**Total:** ~200 km cycling, two completely different landscapes, four overnight stays. Gravel, mountain climbing and canal cycling in one weekend.
## Summary
- **Gravel and long distance →** Valdres, no question
- **Steep climbing →** Telemark (Gaustatoppen) or Valdres (Valdresflya) — both deliver
- **MTB with infrastructure →** Valdres (Beitostølen Trail Arena)
- **Flat family cycling →** Telemark (Telemarkskanalen)
- **Widest route selection →** Valdres with 360+ routes
- **Longest season →** Telemark starts earlier in spring
Valdres is the more complete cycling destination. Telemark is specialised — the canal is unique, and Gaustatoppen is worth the trip. Both deserve a place on the list.
