# Valdres vs Rondane — where should you cycle?

<AnswerBox question="Should I cycle in Valdres or the Rondane area?" answer="Valdres has Norway's best gravel network with Mjølkevegen (250 km), 306 mapped routes and Beitostølen Trail Arena. The Rondane area offers Rondanevegen (national tourist route), quiet road cycling around Ringebu/Venabygdsfjellet and spectacular high mountain scenery — but far fewer dedicated cycling routes. Choose Valdres for gravel weekends and cycling holidays, Rondane for short road stages combined with mountain hiking." />

Valdres and the Rondane area share a lot: both are Innlandet destinations, both have high mountains, both are 3–4 hours from Oslo. But as cycling destinations, they are very different.

Here is an honest comparison for you planning this year's cycling trip.

---

## Gravel and gravel roads

**Valdres** is Norway's gravel capital. [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) alone gives you 250 km of continuous gravel road cycling from Vinstra to Gol. In addition, we have over 125 mapped gravel routes — from short [mountain farm roads](/guider/stolsveier-gravel-valdres) to [demanding high mountain loops](/guider/hardeste-sykkelutfordringer-valdres). The mountain farm road network in Valdres is unique in a Norwegian context.

**The Rondane area** has gravel roads, but they are scattered and not mapped as continuous cycling routes. The gravel road network around Venabygdsfjellet and towards Rondane National Park is suitable for exploratory rides, but you'll need to plan the route yourself. No dedicated gravel infrastructure.

**Winner:** Valdres — by a good margin.

---

## Road cycling

**Valdres** has 65 road routes with everything from [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya-landevei) (1389 m above sea level) to quiet [valley road loops](/guider/landeveissykling-valdres-asfalt) along Begna. Rv51 and Rv33 provide long continuous stretches with little traffic outside July.

**The Rondane area** has Rondanevegen — a national tourist route from Ringebu via Venabygdsfjellet to Folldal. This is a spectacular road cycling route through cultural landscapes with the Rondane massif peaks as a backdrop. The Ringebu–Folldal stretch is around 75 km with moderate climbing. The E6 valley (Gudbrandsdalen) also has good road stretches, but more traffic.

**Winner:** Even — Rondanevegen is iconic for road cycling, but Valdres has greater variety and more routes.

---

## MTB and off-road

**Valdres** has [Beitostølen Trail Arena](/guider/terrengsykling-mtb-beitostolen) with marked trails in multiple difficulty levels, plus 58 mapped MTB routes across the entire region. [Bitihorn](/guider/bitihorn-mtb-komplett-guide) is Valdres' most demanding off-road trail.

**The Rondane area** has no dedicated MTB arena. The terrain around Rondane is primarily hiking terrain — loose scree and alpine trails unsuitable for cycling. Lower forest areas around Ringebu and Sør-Fron have unorganised forest trails.

**Winner:** Valdres — clearly.

---

## Family and beginners

**Valdres** has 58 family routes, an [interactive route finder](/finn-rute) and dedicated [beginner guides](/guider/nybegynner-forste-sykkeltur-valdres). [Valdresbanen cycle path](/guider/valdresbanen-sykkelvei-guide) offers car-free cycling for the whole family.

**The Rondane area** has no dedicated family cycling routes. Some gravel roads around the mountain lodges are suitable for shorter trips with children, but nothing is specifically designed for cycling.

**Winner:** Valdres.

## Scenery and experience

This is where Rondane stands out. Rondane is Norway's oldest national park (1962) with rounded mountain peaks above 2000 m. Rondslottet (2178 m) is a landmark. The landscape is open, barren and magnificent — completely different from Valdres' green valleys. If you cycle Rondanevegen in September, you'll see reindeer on the plateau and autumn colours that can compete with anywhere in Scandinavia.

**Valdres** gives you [mountain farm culture](/guider/stolskultur-sykkel-valdres), Jotunheimen views from [Bygdin](/guider/jotunheimen-kanten-sykkelguide), and varied landscapes from valley floor (300 m) to high mountains (1389 m) on the same day. The cultural experiences — [stave churches](/guider/stavkirkene-valdres-sykkelguide), farm visits with freshly made waffles, local goat cheese — are an essential part of the cycling experience and provide stops that actually feel worth stopping for.

**Winner:** A matter of taste — Rondane for raw mountain nature, Valdres for culture and variety.

## Season and timing

**Valdres** has a longer season: valley routes open as early as April–May, high mountain roads like Valdresflya and Mjølkevegen from mid-June. [Autumn cycling](/guider/hostsykling-valdres-guide) works well until October in the valleys.

**The Rondane area** has a shorter season. Rondanevegen is snow-free from June, but autumn weather in the mountains puts an effective stop to things in September. Forest roads at lower elevations can be cycled until October.

**Accommodation:** Valdres has everything from mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen to camping and [cabins](/guider/overnatting-syklister-valdres). Rondane has classic DNT cabins (Rondvassbu, Bjørnhollia, Dørålseter) — great for hiking, but not particularly set up for cyclists with large bike boxes.

## Weather and climate — two faces of the inland

Both regions are inland destinations with dry continental climate — but the altitude differences create noticeable differences.

<StatGrid items={[
  { label: "Summer precipitation", valdres: "60–80 mm/month (Fagernes)", rondane: "50–70 mm/month (Folldal)" },
  { label: "Temperature July", valdres: "14–18 °C valley, 8–12 °C mountain", rondane: "12–16 °C valley, 6–10 °C mountain" },
{ label: "Wind conditions", valdres: "Moderate — valleys provide shelter", rondane: "Exposed — open plateaus" },
{ label: "Daylight June", valdres: "~20 hours", rondane: "~20 hours" },
{ label: "Cycleable season", valdres: "April (valley) – October", rondane: "June – September" },
  { label: "Weather app", valdres: "yr.no Fagernes + Beitostølen", rondane: "yr.no Folldal + Venabygdsfjellet" }
]} />

**Valdres' advantage:** Valley routes below 500 m give 2–3 extra weeks at each end of the season. You can cycle in Slidredalen or along Begna as early as late April. The Rondane area lacks equivalent lowland routes — Rondanevegen at 694–1065 m doesn't open until June.

**Rondane's advantage:** Drier climate on average. Folldal is one of Norway's driest places. Gravel roads dry faster after rain, and you avoid clay soil that sticks to your tyres.

**Shared challenge:** Both areas can experience rapid weather changes in the mountains. A wind jacket and rain jacket are mandatory above 800 m — regardless of the forecast. Check yr.no for both destinations: the wind on Rondanevegen is typically 30–50% stronger than on Valdres' valley routes, because the landscape is more open.

## 5 days — combine both regions

Got a week? You can get the best of both. Ringebu is 2 hours from Fagernes, and you can easily split your holiday between Valdres' gravel routes and Rondane's spectacular road cycling scenery.

<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Day 1 — Arrival Valdres", aktivitet: "Check in Fagernes, warm-up ride Strandefjorden 28 km", km: "28", hm: "240" },
{ label: "Day 2 — Gravel Valdres", aktivitet: "Stølsvidda–Panoramavegen gravel loop from Vaset, mountain farm food", km: "45", hm: "650" },
{ label: "Day 3 — Mountain pass Valdres", aktivitet: "Valdresflya round trip from Beitostølen — Norway's highest cycleable pass", km: "50", hm: "1020" },
{ label: "Day 4 — Rondanevegen", aktivitet: "Drive to Venabygdsfjellet, cycle Rondanevegen to Folldal 75 km, pickup/bus", km: "75", hm: "680" },
  { label: "Day 5 — Rondane lowlands", aktivitet: "Forest roads around Ringebu, Sollia church, relaxed finish", km: "30", hm: "350" }
]} />

**Logistics:** Drive from Fagernes to Ringebu via Rv33 and E6 (approx. 2 hours). Alternatively: take the Valdresekspressen bus to Oslo and train onwards to Ringebu — but driving is easier with a bike. Rondanevegen is linear (Venabygdsfjellet–Folldal), so you need either two cars, someone to pick you up, or a bus back via E6.

**Budget:** Hotel Valdres 3 nights (NOK 2,500–4,500) + Rondane 2 nights (NOK 2,000–3,500) + transport + food = approx. NOK 8,000–15,000 for the whole trip. Camping cuts costs by 60%.

## Who should choose what?

**Choose Valdres if you:**
- Are planning a dedicated cycling trip or cycling holiday
- Want to ride gravel, MTB or have multi-day route options
- Are travelling with family and need facilitated routes
- Want to combine cycling with [mountain farm visits](/guider/stolskultur-sykkel-valdres) and cultural experiences

**Choose the Rondane area if you:**
- Want to combine cycling and mountain hiking on the same trip
- Are most interested in Rondanevegen (spectacular road route)
- Prefer a quieter, less facilitated cycling terrain
- Want to experience pure high mountain nature without infrastructure

**Combine both?** From Valdres you can drive 2 hours to Ringebu and do Rondanevegen as a day trip. Start with [3 days in Valdres](/guider/tre-dager-valdres-sykkeltur), finish with one day along Rondanevegen — you get the best of both. [Cycling holiday in Valdres](/guider/sykkelferie-valdres-planlegg-drommetur) gives you a ready-made planning framework for the whole trip.
