<AnswerBox
question="Is Valdres suitable for a cycling club training camp?"
answer="Yes — Valdres is one of Norway's best training camp destinations for cyclists. Varied routes from easy family cycling to demanding mountain climbs, good group capacity at hotels in Beitostølen and Fagernes, and a season that runs from May to September."
/>
Valdres is not a random choice for Norwegian cycling clubs looking for a training camp destination. The area combines most of what you need: elevation gain you actually have to work for, long rides on quiet gravel roads, good accommodation and a climate that is cooler than the coastal cities in the middle of summer.
Here is a practical guide for those planning a training camp for a team, cycling club or group of friends.

## Best period for training camps
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Road cycling", value: "May–Sept", sub: "Rv51 and the Fagernes area" },
{ label: "Gravel/Mjølkevegen", value: "June–Sept", sub: "Typically opens 15 June" },
{ label: "MTB/Trail", value: "June–Sept", sub: "Beitostølen Trail Arena from ~10 June" },
{ label: "Autumn camp", value: "Aug–Sept", sub: "Quietest roads, great conditions" }
]} columns={2} />
**May** is possible for low-lying routes, but mountain routes are closed. **June** is ideal for the first gravel camps. **July–August** is peak season — book early. **September** is underrated: fewer tourists, dry trails and beautiful autumn colours.

## Basecamps — where does the group stay?
### Beitostølen (recommended)
Beitostølen is the natural centre for training camps in Valdres. Here you will find:
- **Beitostølen Resort** — conference facilities, swimming pool and spa. Well suited for teams that want everything in one place.
- **Beitostølen Resort** — classic mountain hotel with good capacity for groups. Has a bike room and drying room.
- **Cabin rental** — several operators offer cabin clusters for groups. More private than a hotel, but requires more self-organisation.
From Beitostølen you have direct access to: [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya), [Mjølkevegen stages](/ruter/mjolkevegen), [Beitostølen Trail Arena](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena), and [Beitostølen Gravel Loop](/ruter/beitostolen-gravel-loop).
### Fagernes (alternative)
Cheaper than Beitostølen, but with a slightly longer transfer to the mountain routes. Suits teams that prioritise road cycling from day one. Hotell Fagernes has conference facilities and is accustomed to receiving groups.
### Vaset (for Mjølkevegen camps)
Vaset Fjellhotell is a popular choice for teams that want to ride stages of Mjølkevegen. The hotel has cycling facilities and is used to Mjølkevegen cyclists. The quietest of the three options.

## Route programme — daily breakdown
A typical 5-day training camp from Beitostølen might look like this:
### Day 1 — Warm-up and activation (30–50 km)
**[Syndin Rundt](/ruter/syndin-rundt)** — 27 km, 340 hm. A good warm-up ride with enough variety to test the legs after the journey. No major surprises, but requires some attention on the technical sections.
### Day 2 — Interval day (1–2 hours of intensity)
**[Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya)** — 55 km, road. The classic climb test in Valdres. Fagernes to Valdresflya at 1,389 m above sea level gives 1,120 hm in total. Ride up at tempo, descend as a group. Alternative: use the summit as the turnaround point.
### Day 3 — Long ride (4–6 hours)
**[Mjølkevegen stage](/ruter/mjolkevegen)** — Vaset to Beitostølen and back is approximately 50 km gravel with 860 hm. A solid day that tests fitness and technique. Vaset Fjellhotell is a natural stopping point for food.
### Day 4 — Technique day (MTB or gravel)
**[Beitostølen Trail Arena](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena)** — for MTB teams or those wanting technical training. Varying difficulty levels from green to black. Can be combined with a relaxed gravel ride afterwards.
### Day 5 — Final ride (2–3 hours)
**[Øyangen Runden](/ruter/oyangrunden)** — 38 km, gravel. A good closing loop without too much intensity. Works well as a group ride where everyone stays together.

## Logistics for groups
**Transport:** Most groups drive themselves — Beitostølen is 3 hours from Oslo. Bus from Oslo to Beitostølen is available (Nettbuss/Vy), but carrying bikes requires checking capacity. Minibus with a bike trailer is the most common solution for teams.
**Bike storage:** Specify your needs when booking — most hotels in Beitostølen have a bike room or bike shed. Locks and tyre hangers are standard.
**Workshop and repairs:** Always bring basic tools and spare parts — inner tubes, tyres, cables, brake pads. The nearest bike workshop is in Fagernes. [Fagernes Sykkel](https://www.fagernessykkel.no) can assist with more serious problems.
**Food en route:** Gomobu Fjellstue, Nøsen Fjellhotell and Raubergstulen serve groups that give advance notice. Plan lunch stops — especially on days with long gravel routes.

## Practical checklist for the team leader
- [ ] Book accommodation with a bike room and drying room (specify this explicitly)
- [ ] Clarify dietary needs within the group (allergies, vegan, etc.)
- [ ] Download GPX routes for all participants — mobile coverage is patchy
- [ ] Notify mountain lodges if you are planning a lunch stop with more than 10 people
- [ ] Check road status on Rv51/Valdresflya closer to departure (closes in snowfall)
- [ ] Contact Valdres Destinasjon for tailored group rates and packages

## What does it cost?
Price levels in Valdres are lower than many west-coast destinations. Rough estimate per person per night (including breakfast, double room):
- Beitostølen Resort: NOK 1,400–2,200
- Beitostølen Resort: NOK 1,200–1,800
- Cabin rental (shared): NOK 500–900
- Fagernes Hotell: NOK 900–1,500
Many hotels offer group discounts when booking 10+ rooms. Always ask about this.
