# Cycling Weekend in Valdres — for visitors from Sweden or Denmark
You've seen the photos of [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) and the gravel roads through the Norwegian mountains. Now you want to go. Here is a concrete 2-day plan — from border crossing to the last bend down towards [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen).
<AnswerBox question="How do I plan a cycling weekend in Valdres from Sweden?" answer="Drive to Fagernes via Oslo (about 3 hours from Oslo, 6–7 hours from Stockholm). Base yourself at Beitostølen or Fagernes. Day 1: gravel loop around Beitostølen (35 km). Day 2: the Syndin loop or a taste of Mjølkevegen. Bring your bike by car — rental is available, but your own equipment gives more flexibility." />

## Getting to Valdres
### From Sweden (Stockholm, Göteborg, Karlstad)
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Stockholm → Fagernes", value: "About 6.5 h", sub: "Via E18/E16 over Kongsvinger" },
{ label: "Göteborg → Fagernes", value: "About 6 h", sub: "Via E6 to Oslo, then E16" },
{ label: "Karlstad → Fagernes", value: "About 3.5 h", sub: "Shortest route — via Rv2 and E16" },
{ label: "Oslo → Fagernes", value: "About 3 h", sub: "E16 all the way, straightforward drive" }
]} columns={2} />
**By car:** The E16 from Oslo to Fagernes is one of Norway's easiest and most predictable mountain roads. No toll stations between Oslo and Fagernes. Good tarmac all the way. Fagernes sits at 360 moh — you'll barely notice you've driven into the mountains.
**By bus:** Valdresekspressen runs Oslo–Fagernes–Beitostølen several times daily. Bike space must be booked in advance — call Innlandstrafikk to secure a spot. The bus takes about 3.5 hours from Oslo Bus Terminal.
**Tips for Swedish cyclists:** Fill up on fuel in Sweden — petrol prices in Norway are noticeably higher. The border crossing is smooth (no customs checks for EU/EEA citizens with their own bike).
### From Denmark
Ferry to Oslo (DFDS from Copenhagen, about 17 hours) or fly to Oslo Gardermoen. Continue by rental car or bus. From Gardermoen to Fagernes is about 2.5 hours by car via Rv4 and E16.
---
## Choose your base
### Beitostølen — best for active cyclists
900 moh. All routes start from the centre. [Trail Arena](/guider/terrengsykling-mtb-beitostolen) for MTB, gravel roads in every direction, and [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya) straight up the hill for those wanting a real challenge.
**Accommodation:** Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen and Beitostølen Resort are the largest options. Several cabins and apartments available through booking platforms. In season (June–August) you should book at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
### [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes) — best for comfort and variety
360 moh. More town life, shops and restaurants. A good base if you want to combine cycling with other activities. Proximity to [Slidredalen](/omrade/slidre-dalen) and [Aurdal](/omrade/aurdal) gives access to flatter, more relaxed routes. See [transport to Valdres from Oslo](/guider/transport-oslo-valdres-sykkel) for an alternative without a car.
**Accommodation:** Scandic Valdres is centrally located. Several campsites in the area for those wanting to keep costs down.
---
## Day 1: Arrival + gravel loop around Beitostølen
**Arrival:** Aim to be there by lunch. Park the car, check in, assemble your bike.
**Afternoon route:** [Beitostølen Gravel Loop](/ruter/beitostolen-gravel-loop) — 35 km, 520 hm, moderate. Starts and ends in Beitostølen centre. Gravel roads through mountain pasture landscape with views towards Jotunheimen. Allow 2.5–3.5 hours.
**Alternative (shorter):** [Øyangrunden](/ruter/oyangrunden) — 32.5 km, 420 hm. Somewhat easier, accessible for most riders in reasonable shape.
**Evening:** Dinner at the hotel or one of the eateries in Beitostølen centre. Check your bike — lube the chain, check tyre pressure for day 2.
---
## Day 2: Longer route + journey home
### Option A: The Syndin Loop (moderate, half day)
[Syndin Rundt](/ruter/syndin-rundt) — 42 km, 650 hm. Quiet gravel roads along the Syndin lake in calm mountain terrain. Allow 3–4 hours. Time to pack and drive home afterwards.
### Option B: A taste of Mjølkevegen (easy, shorter)
[Mjølkevegen stage 2: Ruten–Beitostølen](/ruter/mjolkevegen-etappe-2-ruten-beitostolen) — 55 km, but you can turn back halfway for a 25–30 km out-and-back taste. Classic mountain pasture gravel at its finest.
### Option C: Valdresflya (demanding, for strong riders)
[Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya) — 72 km, demanding road climb to 1389 moh. For experienced cyclists with good fitness only. Spectacular, but demanding. Start early.
**Journey home:** Pack the car after lunch. Fagernes is 30 minutes from Beitostølen. E16 back towards Oslo and on to Sweden.

## Practical information
### Currency and payment
Norway uses Norwegian kroner (NOK). Card is accepted everywhere — even at mountain lodges. You rarely need cash. Vipps (Norwegian payment app) does not work with Swedish bank accounts.
### Bike rental
lokal operatør at Beitostølen [rents gravel and e-bikes](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres) in season. Read the [e-bike guide for Valdres](/guider/elsykkel-valdres-guide) if you want tips on what an e-bike gives you on these routes. Your own equipment is recommended for a weekend — you know your bike and avoid the adjustment period.
### Mobile coverage
Good coverage in Beitostølen centre and along the main roads. Gaps in coverage exist on the high mountain plateau and along some gravel roads. Download maps offline (Google Maps or Komoot) before the trip.
### Season
The gravel roads in the high mountains normally open in June and are rideable through September. [The first cycling routes of spring](/guider/varens-forste-sykkelruter-valdres) provides updated season information. The valley routes around Fagernes can be ridden from May.
### Weather
Mountain weather changes quickly. Bring a windproof jacket and an extra layer even on sunny days. Check yr.no for Beitostølen on the morning you ride.

## Extended plan: 3–4 days
Have more time? Add:
- **Day 3:** [Panoramavegen](/guider/panoramavegen-sykkelguide) from Vaset — one of Valdres' finest viewpoint routes
- **Day 4:** [Mjølkevegen stage 1](/guider/mjolkevegen-etappe-1-vinstra-ruten-guide) — start Norway's most famous gravel route

## What you should know as a foreign cyclist
### Road rules for cyclists in Norway
Cyclists largely follow the same rules as cars: drive on the right, give way to traffic from the right, and use cycle lanes where available. Helmets are not legally required for adults, but strongly recommended — especially on gravel roads and in the mountains. Children under 15 must always wear a helmet.
### Allemannsretten — your right to the outdoors
Norway has the Outdoor Recreation Act: you can cycle on paths and roads in open countryside freely. You can also pitch a tent for one night at least 150 metres from the nearest occupied dwelling. This is unique to the Nordic countries — and a great advantage for cyclists who want to combine gravel and camping.
### Emergency numbers
- **113** — ambulance
- **112** — police
- **110** — fire
- Mobile coverage is good in the valleys, but can be unreliable on the high mountain plateau above 1000 moh.
### Food and drink on the way
Norwegian mountain lodges and farm dairies along the routes often serve home-made food in season (June–September). Brunost, waffles and rømmekolle are classics worth trying. Don't count on finding open cafés after 5 pm outside Fagernes and Beitostølen centre — bring packed food.

## Drive smart — tolls and rest stops along the E16
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Toll Oslo–Fagernes", value: "None", sub: "E16 is toll-free from Sandvika to Fagernes — one of the few major routes without a toll booth" },
{ label: "Fuel", value: "Fill up in Sweden", sub: "Save 3–5 kr/litre. Last Swedish station: Charlottenberg (E18) or Eda (Rv2)" },
{ label: "Best rest stop", value: "Hensmoen (E16)", sub: "About 1.5 h from Oslo. Petrol, food, toilets. Last proper stop before Valdres" },
{ label: "Alternative route", value: "Rv4 via Gjøvik", sub: "15 min longer, but nicer scenery and less heavy traffic than E16 through Ringerike" }
]} columns={2} />
**For Danish ferry passengers:** After the DFDS ferry to Oslo you arrive around 10 am. Drive straight through — you'll be in Fagernes by lunch. Note: Norwegian parking meters take cards, but you'll need the EasyPark or Aimo Park app for on-street parking in Oslo.
**EV tips:** Charging stations available in Hønefoss (Kiwi fast charger), Bagn (Coop charger) and Fagernes centre. Beitostølen has a Tesla Destination Charger at Scandic and some AC chargers. Plan with A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) for Norwegian mountain roads.

## Rain and bad weather — plan B for the weekend
Valdres weather changes quickly, especially at altitude. But rain doesn't have to mean a cancelled weekend.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Light drizzle", value: "Ride in the valley", sub: "Routes below 500 moh handle rain well — Valdresbanen and the Fagernes loops have good drainage" },
{ label: "Persistent rain", value: "Short sessions", sub: "2 hours out, warm shower, new session after lunch. Gravel in rain is surprisingly fun with the right gear" },
{ label: "Thunderstorms", value: "Stay off the high plateau", sub: "Valdresflya and Panoramavegen are exposed — check yr.no on the morning you ride" },
{ label: "Plan B activities", value: "Valdres Folkemuseum", sub: "Fagernes centre. Stave churches (Lomen, Hegge) are wind-sheltered cultural experiences" }
]} columns={2} />
**Rain kit for Scandinavian visitors:** Bring a thin windproof jacket (Gore-Tex or equivalent) and a set of dry clothes in the car. Norwegian mountain weather is rarely cold in June–August — the rain is annoying, not dangerous. A wool base layer keeps you warm even when wet.
**Three wet-weather routes that work:**
1. [Valdresbanen Sykkelvei](/guider/valdresbanen-sykkelvei-guide) — flat, sheltered, car-free (37 km)
2. [Fagernes–Strandefjorden loop](/ruter/fagernes-strandefjorden-rundtur) — valley floor, good tarmac/gravel (18 km)
3. [Leira bygdevei](/ruter/leira-bygdevei-kultursti) — short and safe, perfect in bad weather (9 km)
---
## Summary
Valdres is surprisingly easy to reach from Sweden and Denmark. The E16 from Oslo is straightforward, Fagernes is a natural stopping point, and from Beitostølen you have 250+ cycling routes within riding distance. A weekend gives you enough to get hooked — and start planning your next trip before you're even home.
