## Mjølkevegen: service strategy per stage

Along Mjølkevegen, service availability is uneven. Plan accordingly.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Stage 1 Vinstra–Beitostølen", value: "Service at destination", sub: "lokal operatør + Intersport in Beitostølen" },
  { label: "Stage 2 Beitostølen–Vaset", value: "Service at start", sub: "lokal operatør Beitostølen — fix everything BEFORE you leave" },
  { label: "Stage 3 Vaset–Golsfjellet", value: "⚠️ No service", sub: "Bring 2 inner tubes and a patch kit" },
  { label: "Stage 4 Golsfjellet–Gol", value: "Service at destination", sub: "Intersport Gol in the town centre" }
]} columns={2} />

**Critical tip:** Stage 3 (Vaset–Golsfjellet via Stølsvidda) has no service. Make sure you have two spare inner tubes and an emergency patch kit before starting this stage.

## What you should always carry

Regardless of route, keep these items in your bag:

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "🔧 Spare inner tubes", value: "2 pcs", sub: "Same dimensions as your tyres" },
  { label: "🩹 Patch kit", value: "1 set", sub: "For emergencies — backup" },
  { label: "💨 CO₂ cartridge", value: "2 pcs + adapter", sub: "Or mini pump as backup" },
  { label: "🔩 Multi-tool", value: "3/4/5/6 mm hex", sub: "Plus T25 Torx" },
  { label: "⛓️ Chain breaker", value: "+ master link", sub: "For chain failure" },
  { label: "🪢 Cable ties", value: "5–10 pcs", sub: "Universal tool for temporary fixes" }
]} columns={3} />

---

## Price and capacity: check directly

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Puncture", value: "Ask workshop", sub: "Price depends on tube/tyre and capacity" },
  { label: "Chain replacement", value: "Ask workshop", sub: "Price depends on chain type and parts" },
  { label: "Brake adjustment", value: "Ask workshop", sub: "Mechanical and hydraulic service differ" },
  { label: "Urgent help", value: "Book time", sub: "Do not assume drop-in in peak season" },
  { label: "Full service", value: "Book ahead", sub: "Best before the trip, not at stage start" },
  { label: "eMTB service", value: "Check brand", sub: "Motor/battery often require authorised skills" }
]} columns={3} />

**Note:** Old price examples are deliberately removed because they go stale quickly. Use this page to choose the right place, then get price and time directly from the workshop.

## Emergency repair in the field — the most common problems

Far from a workshop? Here are quick fixes for the three most common breakdowns.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Puncture", value: "10–15 min", sub: "Replace inner tube → pump → ride on" },
  { label: "Chain off/broken", value: "2–5 min", sub: "Place chain on smallest sprocket → pedal gently" },
  { label: "Loose brake", value: "5 min", sub: "Tighten cable with multi-tool, adjust pad" },
  { label: "Skipping gears", value: "5–10 min", sub: "Adjust cable with barrel adjuster — ¼ turn at a time" }
]} columns={2} />

### Puncture repair step-by-step

1. **Flip the bike** onto the rear wheel and handlebars (or use a tree as a stand)
2. **Release the wheel** — quick release or unscrew the thru-axle
3. **Lever the tyre** off with tyre levers — one side only
4. **Pull out the inner tube** — find the hole (pump up and listen, or submerge in water)
5. **Check the inside of the tyre** — remove any glass or thorns that caused the puncture
6. **Insert new inner tube** — place the valve in first, then carefully work the rest around
7. **Tyre back on** — use your hands, avoid tyre levers (they pinch the tube)
8. **Pump up** — check the tube is not pinched between the rim and tyre

**Pro tip:** Practise at home. Learning for the first time under pressure in the field is too late.

### Chain failure — a master link saves the day

If you have a chain breaker and master link, you can fix a broken chain in 10 minutes:

1. Use the chain breaker to push out the damaged link
2. Connect the chain with the master link
3. The chain is now 1 link shorter — avoid the largest rear sprockets

If you do *not* have a master link? Bind the chain with cable ties as an emergency solution — it holds for 5–10 km with careful pedalling in a low gear.

---

## When should you go to a workshop vs. fix it yourself?

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Fix yourself ✅", value: "Puncture", sub: "If you have a tube and pump: always" },
  { label: "Fix yourself ✅", value: "Chain off/broken", sub: "With chain breaker and master link" },
  { label: "Workshop 🔧", value: "Hydraulic brake", sub: "Requires special tools and fluid" },
  { label: "Workshop 🔧", value: "Hub/bottom bracket", sub: "Special tools — not field-repairable" },
  { label: "Consider 🤔", value: "Skipping gears", sub: "Try barrel adjuster — workshop if it doesn't help" },
  { label: "Consider 🤔", value: "Brake pads", sub: "Can be replaced yourself with multi-tool" }
]} columns={3} />

**Rule of thumb:** Can you fix it with a multi-tool and 15 minutes? Do it. Everything else: ride carefully to the nearest workshop.
