# Cycling Weekend in Valdres — 3 Ready-Made Weekend Trips

You don't need a full week off to experience Valdres by bike. A long weekend — Friday afternoon to Sunday — gives you enough time to feel the gravel roads under your wheels, eat waffles at a mountain lodge, and fall asleep with tired legs and a good mood.

Here are three ready-made weekend trips, tailored to different levels and bike types. All start with a bus from Oslo on Friday afternoon and end with a bus home on Sunday.

## Weekend 1: Family Weekend Around Fagernes (easy)

**For:** Families with children 6+, beginners, those who want a relaxed pace
**Bike type:** Regular bike, hybrid bike, or e-bike
**Total:** approx. 55 km over 2 days

### Friday

- **16:30** — [Valdresekspressen](https://www.valdresekspressen.no) from Oslo Bus Terminal (bring your bike, book a bike spot)
- **20:00** — Arrival in Fagernes. Check in to accommodation
- Recommended: [Fagernes Camping](https://www.fagernescamping.no/) or Quality Hotel Fagernes

### Saturday — Valdresbanen and Slidrefjorden (33 km)

The day starts on [Valdresbanen cycle path](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) — 15 km of flat, paved trail along the old railway line from Fagernes towards Leira. Perfect warm-up for the whole family.

After lunch in Leira, continue along the [Slidre–Lomen cultural road](/ruter/slidre-lomen-kulturvei) — 18 km of easy country road along Slidrefjorden. Light traffic, flat stretches, and views over the fjord the whole way.

**Tip:** Stop at Slidredomen, one of Norway's oldest stone churches (approx. 1170). A nice rest stop with tables and benches.

**Return:** Bus or cycle along the same road back to Fagernes.

### Sunday — Timannsstolrunden (17 km)

A light morning ride on [Timannsstolrunden](/ruter/timannsstolrunden) — 17 km through cultural landscapes around Fagernes. Flat terrain, gravel roads, and quiet forest paths. Perfect before the bus home.

- **14:30** — Valdresekspressen back to Oslo
- **18:00** — Home with great memories

## Weekend 2: Gravel Weekend on Golsfjellet (intermediate)

**For:** Recreational cyclists, gravel-curious riders, those who want a bit of a challenge
**Bike type:** Gravel bike (can be hired locally)
**Total:** approx. 85 km over 2 days

### Friday

- **16:30** — Valdresekspressen to Fagernes, then local bus to Golsfjellet
- Alternative: Drive to Storefjell Resort Hotel or Pers Hotell
- Check in and light evening meal

### Saturday — Golsfjellet Loop + Øyangen (64 km)

Start the day with [Golsfjellet rundt](/ruter/golsfjellet-rundt) — 32 km on good gravel roads through open mountain terrain. Moderate climbing, wide roads, and views in every direction.

After lunch at Storefjell or Kamben Fjellstue: [Øyangrunden](/ruter/oyangrunden) — 32.5 km of gravel around Øyangen with 420 hm of elevation. Varied terrain, birch forest, and mountain plateau.

**Tip:** Golsfjellet has Norway's densest network of marked gravel roads. You can cut routes short if you get tired — there's always a shortcut back.

### Sunday — Blomeslettrunden (23 km)

A relaxed finish with [Blomeslettrunden](/ruter/blomeslettrunden) — 23 km of easy gravel. Gentle gradients, mountain farm landscapes, and time to enjoy a last coffee before heading home.

## Practical Information for All Weekend Trips

### Transport

[Valdresekspressen](https://www.valdresekspressen.no) runs daily from Oslo to Fagernes and Beitostølen. You can bring your bike — book a bike spot when purchasing your ticket. Price approx. 400–600 NOK one way.

By car: Oslo–Fagernes is approx. 3 hours via E16. Free parking at most locations.

### Bike Hire

No bike of your own? Several places in Valdres hire out gravel bikes, e-bikes, and mountain bikes:

- Beitostølen Aktiv — gravel and MTB
- Fagernes Sport — hybrid bikes and e-bikes
- Golsfjellet — hire at Storefjell and Kamben

See our [guide to bike hire in Valdres](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres) for a complete overview.

### Accommodation

Valdres has everything from camping to mountain hotels. For cycling weekends we recommend:

- **Budget:** Camping (from 250 NOK/night) or DNT mountain huts
- **Comfort:** Mountain lodges and guesthouses (800–1 500 NOK/night)
- **Luxury:** Mountain hotels with spa and dinner (1 500–3 000 NOK/night)

Read more in our [accommodation guide for cyclists](/guider/overnatting-syklister-valdres).

### Packing List for a Cycling Weekend

- Cycling kit for 2 days (don't forget rain gear — mountain weather changes fast)
- Tool kit: spare inner tube, pump, multi-tool
- Charging accessories for GPS/phone
- Warm jacket for evenings (even in July it can drop to 8°C in the mountains)
- Sun cream and sunglasses
- Packed lunch for the first leg

See our [complete packing list for Mjølkevegen](/guider/pakkeliste-mjolkevegen) — much of it applies to shorter trips too.

### Best Time to Go

- **June:** Season opens, fewer crowds, some gravel roads may be wet
- **July:** Peak season, all roads open, best weather — but book accommodation early
- **August:** Still fine weather, fewer people, stable gravel roads
- **September:** Autumn colours, quiet, but shorter days and cooler temperatures
