<AnswerBox
question="What is Stølsvidda and why cycle there?"
answer="Stølsvidda is Norway's most active mountain farm landscape with over 200 active støler. It is the heart of Mjølkevegen and national cycling route no. 5. Cyclists can buy fresh goat cheese and waffles directly from the farm door along all four cycling routes in the area. The season runs from June to September."

## What makes Stølsvidda special?
Stølsvidda stands apart from the rest of Valdres for one reason: the density of active mountain farms. Over 200 barns are in operation during the summer — with dairy cows, goats, and homemade cheese. This is not a reconstructed cultural landscape or museum, but living Norwegian summer farming.
For cyclists, this means one concrete advantage: you can stop every other kilometre and buy fresh brown cheese, goat cheese, sour cream, and waffles directly from the farm door. There is no comparable route in Norway.
Stølsvidda is also a central stage on [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) — national cycling route no. 5, and one of Europe's most talked-about gravel routes.

### [Stølsviddarunden](/ruter/stolsviddarunden) — The Classic
38 km through the densest part of the mountain farm landscape. This route is Stølsvidda's signature ride and is best suited for experienced cyclists on a gravel bike. You cycle through active farms the entire way — expect tractor encounters and cows in the road. That is part of the charm.
**Best for:** Couples and groups of friends who want the authentic Mjølkevegen experience in a single day.
### [Stølsvidda Gravel Loop](/ruter/stolsvidda-gravelrunde) — Plateau and Food
45 km with slightly more variety than Stølsviddarunden — including open mountain sections and broader views. A great combination of mountain farm landscape and open plateau. A slightly longer climb, but a steady rhythm throughout.
**Best for:** Those who want to see more of the plateau itself and not just the valleys.
### [Panorama Loop](/ruter/panoramarunden) — Grand and Photogenic
57 km with Strandefjorden as part of the route — one of Valdres' most beautiful fjords for cycling. The route takes longer (4–6 hours in good shape), but delivers the complete Stølsvidda experience. The highlight is the view towards Jotunheimen.
**Best for:** Experienced cyclists who want a full-day ride with everything Stølsvidda has to offer.
### [Grindaheim Singletrack](/ruter/grindaheim-singletrack) — For MTB Cyclists
30 km and 900 metres of elevation gain. This is not for gravel — it requires a full-suspension MTB and technical experience. Singletrack on the border between Valdres and Vågå with panoramic views towards Jotunheimen. A classic MTB ride for those who want something beyond gravel roads.
**Best for:** Experienced MTB cyclists with good fitness.
## The farm experience — how it works
Along the farm tracks you will see signs reading «Geitost til salgs» (goat cheese for sale) or «Vafler» (waffles) outside many farms. Not all are open at all times — most serve from around 9am to 5pm during peak season (June–August).
**Tip:** Bring cash. Many farms sell directly from the door and not all accept Vipps or card payments.
**Noraker Gård** is a regular stop along the Mjølkevegen stages — [known for local food products and the cyclists who stop there](/faq/noraker-gard-sykkel). [Gomobu Fjellstue](/faq/gomobu-fjellstue-mat) is another natural stop with dinner and accommodation for multi-day tours.
## Season and road conditions
Stølsvidda is snow-free from **mid-June** in a normal year — and remains open until **the end of September**. In May, many gravel roads are soft and not ready for cycling. In October, the farms are closed and the mountain sections can have early snow.
Sundays in July see the most traffic (families and car tourists visiting farms). Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the quietest.
## Practical information
**Start:** Fagernes (60 km south-east) or Beitostølen (15 km south-west). Both have parking and bike rental.
**Bike rental:** Via [Fjellkjeden/Intersport Beitostølen](https://www.beitostolen.com). E-bikes available — Stølsvidda is well suited for e-bikes with lower tyre pressure.
**Accommodation:** Beitostølen is the nearest town centre with many hotels. For bikepacking variants: Oset Fjellstue and Storefjell Resort are the nearest options along Mjølkevegen.
**Food along the way:** Farms along the route (open June–Aug). Bring some extra provisions — farms may be closed in bad weather.
