## Slidre Valley — The Heart of Valdres Culture on Two Wheels
Slidre Valley stretches along Slidrefjorden from Fagernes westward towards Lomen. This is no dramatic mountain route — it is something else: quiet country roads, historic farms, a stave church from 1170 and Norway's richest folk museum collection from Valdres. For cyclists who want more than just elevation gain, this is the valley.
The valley has three routes that together cover all levels. You can ride them in a single day, spread them over two days — or combine them with day trips to Beitostølen (40 km away).

## The Routes
### Slidre-Lomen Cultural Trail — 18 km, easy
The most relaxed route in Slidre Valley. 18 km of tarmac along Slidrefjorden with 120 m of elevation gain — barely noticeable.
You start in Slidre, follow Rv34 along the waterfront and arrive at Lomen after about 1 hour. Along the way you pass Lomen stave church, one of Norway's best-preserved stave churches from c. 1170. It is open for visits June–August, 10:00–16:00. Remove your cycling shoes at the entrance.
Halfway along you pass Valdres Folk Museum — cafeteria with waffles and coffee during opening hours. A perfect stop.
One-way trip: the bus back Lomen–Fagernes is run by Valdres Bilruter. Check timetables at valdresbilruter.no.
**Suitable for:** families, beginners, anyone with a hybrid or road bike.

### Valdresritt Course — 53 km, moderate
Ride the Valdresritt course outside the race and you have the road almost to yourself. 53 km of gravel with 640 m of elevation gain through typical Valdres landscape — fields, birch forest, short climbs and quiet gravel roads.
Valdresrittet is held every year in August (check valdresrittet.no for the date). Riding the course in advance is smart preparation — you will know exactly where the tough sections are.
Challenging section: Lønndal Pass. Hold something back towards the end and keep fuel in the tank for the finish.
Starting point is from the Vaset side — parking at Vaset Hotell.
**Suitable for:** fit cyclists, those preparing for Valdresrittet, gravel enthusiasts.

### Slidre Valley MTB — 42 km, challenging
The quiet option for mountain bikers. Slidre Valley MTB takes you up into the forests and trails above the valley floor — 42 km with 1,050 m of elevation gain for those who want a real workout.
Trail signage is inconsistent. Download the GPX from ut.no and have the route on a cycling computer or phone. September and early October are the best season: drier ground and autumn colours on the hillside.
Bring at least 2.5 litres of water and a substantial packed lunch — there is very little food service along this route. Stream water is clean, but bring a filter as backup.
**Suitable for:** experienced mountain bikers, those who want to avoid crowds.

## Basing Yourself in Slidre Valley
**Fagernes** is the nearest larger town — 20 km east. You will find accommodation, restaurants, a bike shop (Intersport Fagernes) and grocery stores there. A practical base for all three routes.
Alternatively: Slidre Fjordhotell sits right along the Cultural Trail route and puts Slidrefjorden's shoreline just outside your room.
---
## Tips Along the Way
- **Lomen stave church**: Open June–August, 10:00–16:00. Free entry. 5 minutes to see the interior.
- **Valdres Folk Museum**: Cafeteria with waffles. Perfect halfway stop on the Cultural Trail.
- **Slidrefjorden**: Calm and beautiful — great photo spots early in the morning with soft light.
- **Valdresrittet**: Participants use the course for training — watch out for faster cyclists at junctions.

## What You Won't Find in Slidre Valley
No dramatic mountain passes, no Mjølkevegen atmosphere, no Trail Arena. Slidre Valley is culture and tranquillity. If you want exposed mountain terrain and panoramic views, [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya), [Beitostølen Trail Arena](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena) or [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) are better choices.
