<AnswerBox question="Can you combine skiing and cycling in Valdres in spring?" answer="Yes. From mid-April to mid-May, Beitostølen (930m above sea level) still has groomed cross-country ski trails, while the valleys around Fagernes (360m above sea level) are snow-free and ready for cycling. The 570-metre elevation difference gives you two seasons in one day." />

## Spring's secret: 570 vertical metres between winter and summer

Valdres stretches from 300 to over 1400 metres above sea level. That means winter lingers in the mountains long after the valleys have turned green. In practice, this gives you a window of 3–5 weeks where you can cross-country ski in the morning and cycle on bare roads in the afternoon.

This isn't marketing — it's geography. And it's an experience few other places in Norway can match.

## When does it work?

<StatGrid items={[
  { label: "Best period", value: "15 April – 15 May" },
{ label: "Ski conditions", value: "Beitostølen: groomed trails until end of April" },
{ label: "Cycling conditions", value: "Fagernes and the valleys: snow-free from mid-April" },
{ label: "Valley temperature", value: "8–15 °C daytime in May" },
{ label: "Mountain temperature", value: "0–8 °C, cool morning crust" },
  { label: "Daylight", value: "16–18 hours in April–May" }
]} />

Exact timing varies from year to year. Check snow conditions on the Beitostølen Skistadion website and road status on vegvesen.no before you travel.

## How to plan your day

### Morning: Skiing at Beitostølen (930m above sea level)

Beitostølen has one of Norway's best cross-country skiing facilities with 350 km of groomed trails in the normal season. Even in late April the altitude keeps the snow well, especially in the morning when the crust holds.

**Tip:** Start early — between 07:00 and 10:00 conditions are best. After 11:00 the snow becomes soft and heavy.

The ski stadium at Beitostølen is freely accessible. You don't need to buy a lift pass for cross-country skiing.

### Afternoon: Cycling in the valleys (300–500m above sea level)

Drive down to Fagernes (25 min) or Leira (20 min) and get on your bike. The valley roads along Begna and Slidrefjorden are snow-free from mid-April, and traffic is minimal outside the main season.

**Good spring cycling routes:**

- **[Fagernes–Strandefjorden](/ruter/fagernes-strandefjorden-dagstur)** — 22 km easy gravel along the lake, flat and pleasant
- **[Beitostølen markavei](/ruter/beitostolen-markavei-familierunde)** — 10 km family loop (requires snow-free trail, usually from May)
- **[Leira–Aurdal river road](/ruter/leira-aurdal-elvevei)** — 14 km family route along Begna
- **[Fagernes town loop](/ruter/fagernes-sentrumsrunde)** — 8 km easy family route

**Important:** Mountain roads (Valdresflya, Panoramavegen, Stølsvidda) are closed until June. Stick to the valleys for spring cycling.

## Practical plan: 3 days skiing + cycling

**Day 1 — Arrival and skiing**
Drive to Beitostølen. Afternoon skiing on groomed trails around the ski stadium. Stay overnight at Beitostølen.

**Day 2 — The combination day**
Morning skiing 07:00–10:30 at Beitostølen. Drive down to Fagernes. Lunch in town. Cycling 13:00–16:00 along Strandefjorden or Begna. Back to Beitostølen for dinner.

**Day 3 — Cycling day**
Check out. Long cycling loop in the valleys — [Valdresbanen cycle path](/guider/valdresbanen-sykkelvei-guide) or [Begna valley routes](/guider/sykkel-langs-begna-elvedalsruter). Drive home via E16.

## Equipment you need

You need two sets of gear, but not necessarily two cars:

**Skiing:** Cross-country skis, poles, ski boots, wool base layers, windproof jacket. Waxing: universal glider is fine for spring skiing.

**Cycling:** Gravel or hybrid bike with at least 32 mm tyres. Roads may have gravel and sand after winter. Helmet, gloves (it's cooler than you think in April), sunglasses.

**Shared:** Plenty of layers — temperature can vary by 15 degrees between mountain and valley on the same day.

## Accommodation

Beitostølen is the natural base. You're 25 minutes from Fagernes and the valley routes, and you have skiing right outside your door.

- **Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen** — in the centre, close to the ski stadium
- **Beitostølen Resort** — larger complex with pool and spa

Scandic Valdres is an alternative if you prioritise cycling and take the ski sessions as day trips.

## Equipment rental — skip hauling two sets

Travelling with both ski and cycling gear is cumbersome. Fortunately, you can rent both in Valdres:

**Ski rental:** Intersport Beitostølen offers cross-country packages (skis, poles, boots) for day hire. Book the day before during peak season — in April it's rarely fully booked. Most hotels at Beitostølen also have rental or partnership agreements.

**Bike rental:** Valdres has several hire locations — check [our bike rental guide](/guider/sykkelutleie-valdres) for an overview. A gravel bike or hybrid is best for spring routes in the valleys. An e-bike is a good option if you want extra range after a morning ski session.

**Budget tip:** Rent both for 2–3 days and save on transport. Easy to drive to Valdres in a regular car without a ski rack and bike carrier.

## Cross-training: Why skiing + cycling is the perfect combination

For fitness enthusiasts, the ski-to-cycling transition is more than a gimmick. The two activities complement each other perfectly:

<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Cross-country skiing", value: "Upper body, core, balance, aerobic endurance" },
{ label: "Cycling", value: "Legs, knees, power, anaerobic capacity" },
{ label: "Combined effect", value: "Full-body training without overloading" },
  { label: "Recovery time", value: "Alternating reduces injury risk" }
]} />

Morning skiing in cold air activates the body without overloading the joints. Afternoon cycling in warmer valley air promotes blood flow and active recovery in the legs. Many of the world's top cross-country skiers use cycling as a transition activity in spring — Valdres is a natural arena for the same.

**Training suggestion for a 3-day spring camp:**
- Day 1: 1.5 hrs easy classic skiing + 1 hr easy cycling along Strandefjorden
- Day 2: 2 hrs interval skiing (freestyle) + rest day cycling (easy café ride)
- Day 3: 1 hr final ski session + 2 hrs longer cycling trip in the valleys

## Who is it suited for?

- **Active couples** who want variety and longer seasons
- **Fitness enthusiasts** using spring to build form
- **Families with older children** (10+) who can handle both skiing and cycling
- **Anyone who loves seasonal transitions** — there's something magical about feeling snow under your skis and sun on bare skin on the same day

## Backup plan in bad weather

Spring weather in the mountains is unpredictable. Have a plan B:

- **Rain in the valley?** Skiing in the mountains is often unaffected — clouds typically sit below Beitostølen.
- **Snow squall in the mountains?** Move the ski session to the afternoon and cycle in the morning instead.
- **Completely overcast?** [Valdres Folkemuseum](https://valdresmusea.no) in Fagernes is worth a visit. Norway's largest open-air museum outside Oslo.
- **Too warm for skiing?** Then it's a cycling day for both sessions. Try a [loop around Aurdal](/guider/aurdal-sykkelguide) or [Begna valley routes](/guider/sykkel-langs-begna-elvedalsruter).

Weather forecast: Check [yr.no](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig/1-15183/Norge/Innlandet/Nord-Aurdal/Beitost%C3%B8len) for Beitostølen and [yr.no](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig/1-15063/Norge/Innlandet/Nord-Aurdal/Fagernes) for Fagernes — compare the two to see the temperature difference.

## Cycling routes that open earliest in spring

Not all routes in Valdres are equally early to clear. Snowmelt starts in the valleys and creeps upward. Here is the order you can expect:

<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "April — weeks 15–17", value: "Valley roads (300–400m above sea level)", desc: "Fagernes town centre, Begna along the river, Aurdal family loop, Leira–Aurdal" },
{ label: "May — weeks 18–20", value: "Mid-altitude (400–700m above sea level)", desc: "Slidredalen west side, Etnedal valley routes, Reinli routes, lower sections of Tonsåsen" },
{ label: "Late May — weeks 21–22", value: "Upper valley (700–900m above sea level)", desc: "Vaset mountain farm routes, Beitostølen lowland routes, Lomen area" },
  { label: "June — week 23+", value: "High mountain (900m+ above sea level)", desc: "Valdresflya (Rv51), Panoramavegen, Stølsvidda, Mjølkevegen" }
]} />

**Spring tip:** Cycle [Aurdal–Lomen gravel loop](/ruter/aurdal-lomen-grusrunde) (25 km) or [Aurdal–Skrautvål](/ruter/aurdal-skrautval-dalbunn-landevei) (14 km) as early as mid-April. These valley routes along Begna are among the first to become snow-free in all of Valdres. Combine with morning skiing at Beitostølen for the ultimate double day.

**Spring trap:** Forest roads on north-facing slopes can have snow and ice well into May, even when the valley floor is bare. Stick to the south side of the valleys and along lakes/rivers early in the season.

## Valdres vs. other destinations for skiing + cycling

Other places in Norway offer similar possibilities — but Valdres has some unique advantages:

- **Lillehammer:** Good cross-country trails, but the cycling route network is more limited and traffic is heavier. Valdres has quieter roads and better gravel roads.
- **Trysil:** Primarily a ski resort (alpine), not a cross-country arena. The cycling scene is MTB-focused, not gravel/road.
- **Geilo:** A similar concept is possible, but Geilo has fewer groomed cross-country trails late in the season. Hallingskarvet doesn't open until June.
- **Sjusjøen:** Fantastic cross-country skiing, but the valley cycling routes are less varied than Valdres.

Valdres' strength is the combination of Beitostølen's cross-country arena (Norway's widest trail offering) and the valleys' varied cycling routes from gravel to road — all within 25 minutes' drive.

## Season extension in both directions

Valdres gives you more than the classic summer months. With skiing + cycling in April–May, and [autumn cycling](/guider/hostsykling-valdres-guide) in September–October, you can have active experiences in Valdres from Easter to autumn half-term.

And when the mountain roads open in June? That's when the [big cycling season](/guider/valdres-sykkelsesong-2026-apningsdatoer) really begins.

## March–April: The preparation weeks — start planning now

Many people wait until the snow is gone before thinking about cycling. By then you've lost a month. Here's what to do *before* the season starts:

<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "March — weeks 10–13", value: "Get your bike ready", desc: "Service, new tyres if needed, check brakes and chain. Bike shops have short waiting times now — in May it's a 2-week queue." },
{ label: "March — weeks 12–14", value: "Book accommodation", desc: "Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen and Beitostølen Resort fill Easter spots quickly. Book your weekend now." },
{ label: "April — weeks 14–15", value: "Follow the snowmelt", desc: "Check yr.no for Fagernes daytime temperature above 8 °C for three days in a row = valley roads are clear." },
{ label: "April — weeks 15–16", value: "Test ride in the valley", desc: "The first ride doesn't need to be epic. 15 km along Begna tells your body the season has started." },
{ label: "April — weeks 16–17", value: "Combination days begin", desc: "Beitostølen still has groomed trails. Valley roads are bare. The window is open." },
  { label: "May — week 18+", value: "Full swing", desc: "Ski season ends, cycling season accelerates. Mid-altitude routes (400–700m above sea level) open." }
]} />

**Your bike after winter storage:** Don't just hop on after five months in the garage. Check these three things:
- **Tyres:** Pump them up the evening before and see if they hold pressure overnight. Rubber that has sat in the cold can have cracked.
- **Chain:** Run your finger along it — if you feel rust or stiffness, replace it. A new chain costs 200 kr, a new cassette costs 800.
- **Brakes:** Squeeze the brake levers. Do they reach the handlebar without resistance? Then they need adjustment or new pads.

## The gear swap — logistics in practice

The biggest practical challenge with skiing + cycling is the *transition*. You're standing sweaty in cross-country gear at 10:30 and suddenly need to become a cyclist. Here's the setup that works:

**Car as base station**

Park at Beitostølen with all your gear. After skiing: change in the car. Have a clear bag with cycling gear ready — don't mix it with the ski bag.

<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Ski bag", value: "Skis, poles, boots, wool base layers, warm jacket" },
{ label: "Cycling bag", value: "Cycling shorts, jersey, helmet, gloves, sunglasses, windproof jacket" },
{ label: "Transition", value: "Dry base layer, dry buff, energy bar, 0.5L drink ready" },
  { label: "Drive time", value: "Beitostølen → Fagernes: 25 min, → Leira: 20 min, → Aurdal: 30 min" }
]} />

**Tips that save time:**
- Put the bike on the roof/in the back the morning you go skiing — it makes the swap faster.
- Keep dry base layers in a ziplock bag. Nothing ruins a cycle ride faster than damp wool against your skin.
- Eat lunch *after* the drive, not at Beitostølen. You save 30 minutes and have your break where the cycling route starts.
- Skip the shower between sessions. Change clothes, wipe off the sweat, and get out. The shower can wait until you're back at the hotel.

**Without a car?**

It's harder, but possible. [Valdresekspressen](https://www.valdresekspressen.no) runs between Beitostølen and Fagernes, and takes bikes on request. Travel time approx. 35 minutes. Alternatively: base in Fagernes, day trip to Beitostølen by bus for the ski session, cycle locally in the afternoon.
