# Panoramavegen — Valdres' Most Scenic Gravel Loop

Panoramavegen is a ca. 25.5 km gravel loop from Vaset, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cycling experiences in Valdres. The route follows Panoramavegen towards Nøsen and Flyin before returning via Rensenn, Storhaug and Krististølen, with 473 m of elevation gain and sweeping views towards Jotunheimen, Hallingskarvet and the mountains around Golsfjellet. Easy enough for families, exciting enough for gravel enthusiasts.

<AnswerBox question="What is Panoramavegen in Valdres?" answer="Panoramavegen is a ca. 25.5 km gravel loop from Vaset with 473 m of elevation gain. Panoramavegen starts and ends in Vaset village centre, situated at approximately 900 masl in Vestre Slidre municipality. The gravel road is well maintained — wide enough for cars, but with little traffic outside weekends. The surface suits a gravel bike well, but also works for mountain bikes and e-bikes.

---

## Why This Route in Particular?

There are many fine gravel roads in Valdres. Panoramavegen stands out for three reasons:

**The views are unrivalled.** The route travels above the treeline with 360-degree panoramas. On clear days you can see the Jotunheimen peaks to the north, Hallingskarvet to the south, and the entire Valdres valley below you. Few routes in Norway offer so much scenery for so little effort.

**The terrain is forgiving.** 473 m spread over ca. 25.5 km means the climbs are steady rather than extreme. That makes the route good for families with older children (10+), for beginners wanting to try gravel without being intimidated, and for e-bikers looking for a scenic ride with real but manageable climbing.

**Mountain farm culture lives on.** Along the route you pass active summer farms where animals still graze in the summer. The mountain lodges in the area serve waffles, coffee and local dishes — you don't need to carry much food.

---

## The Route Step by Step

### Vaset → Nøsen (approx. 10 km)

The first leg heads north from Vaset centre along a wide gravel road. The terrain rises steadily, and you quickly get views back over Vasetvatnet. After 5–6 km you cross the treeline, and the landscape opens up. Nøsen is a mountain lodge that has served travellers for generations — a natural stop for coffee and waffles.

### Nøsen → Flyin (approx. 8 km)

From Nøsen the route turns east through open plateau landscape. Here the views are at their most dramatic — you see the Jotunheimen peaks to the north and Golsfjellet's rolling hills to the south. The gravel road is flat to gently downhill, and you roll along easily. Flyin marks the easternmost point of the loop.

### Flyin → Vaset (approx. 10 km)

The final leg takes you back south towards Vaset. You lose some elevation, and the last few kilometres are a pleasant descent. The whole loop runs clockwise — this is the most common direction, and it gives the best light in the afternoon.

## Best Time to Visit

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "June", value: "Season opens", sub: "May have snow patches early on" },
{ label: "July", value: "Peak season", sub: "Longest days, most mountain lodges open" },
{ label: "August", value: "Ideal", sub: "Stable weather, still long daylight" },
{ label: "September", value: "Autumn colours", sub: "Shorter days, quieter" },
]} columns={4} />

Panoramavegen is normally rideable from mid-June through September, depending on snowmelt. July and August offer the most stable conditions and longest days. September brings fantastic autumn colours in the birch forest, but mountain lodges may have reduced opening hours.

**Tip:** Evening rides between 17:00–19:00 give the best light. The evening sun hits the Jotunheimen peaks from the west, painting the mountains gold and pink.

## Practical Information

### Start and Parking

Vaset centre has free parking. Fjellstugu and Gomobu Fjellstue are right at the starting point. The nearest grocery shop is also in Vaset.

### Food and Drink

Nøsen Fjellstue along the route serves waffles and coffee in season. Vaset centre has several places to eat. Still, bring a bottle of water — there are ca. 25.5 km with no fixed water source apart from Nøsen.

### Bike Type

A gravel bike is ideal. Tyres from 35 mm upward work well on the well-maintained gravel surface. A mountain bike works fine but is unnecessary. Road bikes with narrow tyres are not recommended — the gravel is too loose.

### By E-Bike

Panoramavegen is one of the best e-bike routes in Valdres. With 473 m of total elevation gain, most e-bikes complete the loop without problems if you start with a charged battery and use assist sensibly. Duration by e-bike: 1.5–2 hours with plenty of margin for photo stops.

### Weather and Wind

The route goes above the treeline, and it is often breezy. Check [yr.no for Vaset](https://www.yr.no/nb/v%C3%A6rvarsel/daglig-tabell/1-2221539/Norge/Innlandet/Vestre%20Slidre/Vaset) before you head out. A windproof jacket is mandatory even on fine summer days — temperatures can drop quickly in the mountains.

---

## Combine with Other Routes

Panoramavegen is a natural starting point for longer rides in the Vaset area:

- **[Vaset–Nøsen–Gomobu](/ruter/vaset-nosen-gomobu)** — extend the route northward towards Gomobu for a longer day (44 km)
- **[Panoramarunden](/ruter/panoramarunden)** — alternative loop with a slightly different line
- **[Tisleifjorden rundt](/ruter/tisleifjorden-rundt)** — flatter family option along the lake
- **[Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen)** — Vaset is the starting point for Norway's most famous gravel route

---

## Who Is Panoramavegen For?

**Families with children 10+:** Flat enough for most to manage. The stop at Nøsen turns the ride into an experience, not just a workout.

**Gravel beginners:** A perfect introduction to mountain gravel. The surface is predictable, the climbs manageable, and you're never far from people.

**E-bikers:** One of the best e-bike experiences in Valdres. A full battery covers the loop with plenty to spare.

**Photographers:** Mountain panoramas in every direction, mountain farm landscapes, and dramatic evening light. Bring a good camera.

**Experienced cyclists:** Panoramavegen alone may be too easy — combine it with [Vaset–Nøsen–Gomobu](/ruter/vaset-nosen-gomobu) or ride it as a warm-up before [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen).

---

## Summary

Panoramavegen from Vaset is one of those routes you simply have to ride if you're in Valdres. Ca. 25.5 km, 473 m of climbing, and views that make you stop every other minute. Easy enough for families with older children, beautiful enough for everyone. Start early or late — avoid midday when cabin-goers are on the road.

## Variants — Short or Long Version

Panoramavegen is flexible. You don't have to ride the full loop.

### Half version (14 km, 1 hour)

Drive or ride to Nøsen, and do only the eastern section of the loop — Nøsen → Flyin → back to Vaset. You get the best viewpoint leg without the initial climb. A smart choice with young children or limited time.

### Extended version (44 km, 3–4 hours)

Combine Panoramavegen with [Vaset–Nøsen–Gomobu](/ruter/vaset-nosen-gomobu). From Nøsen continue northward towards Gomobu before turning back. An extra 16 km through even wilder terrain — here you rarely meet other cyclists.

### Double loop (56 km, 4–5 hours)

Ride Panoramavegen twice in opposite directions — first clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Surprisingly different experience: light, wind and views change completely. For high-volume training days when you want distance without driving.

## Kit List and Safety

Panoramavegen is above the treeline, and the mountains demand respect even on fine summer days.

**Always bring:**
- Windproof jacket (temperature can drop 10°C from Vaset to the highest point)
- At least 0.75 litres of water (no public water points except Nøsen)
- Charged mobile phone with offline maps (Kartverket's Norgeskart works offline)
- Repair kit: inner tube, pump, multi-tool

**Recommended:**
- Sunglasses and sunscreen — UV radiation is strong at altitude
- Buff or headband — your ears will thank you in a headwind
- Energy bar or fruit — 28 km takes longer than you think with photo stops

**Emergency info:** Vaset has mobile coverage (Telenor/Telia). Parts of the route towards Flyin may have an unstable signal. In an emergency: call 113 (ambulance) or 02222 (Red Cross mountain rescue). Nearest emergency clinic is in Fagernes (40 min by car).

---

## Photo Stops — The Five Best

1. **Km 6 — Treeline pass** (approx. 970 masl): First viewpoint where the birch forest lets go. Jotunheimen appears to the north. Best in morning and evening light.
2. **Km 10 — Nøsen Fjellstue**: Classic composition with mountain lodge, grazing animals and a mountain ridge. Include a cyclist in the frame for scale.
3. **Km 14 — Highest point** (approx. 1020 masl): 360-degree panorama. Hallingskarvet to the south, Jotunheimen to the north. Tripod-friendly — flat ground.
4. **Km 18 — East side of Flyin**: Looking back at the route you've ridden. The gravel road draws a line through the plateau — drone territory.
5. **Km 25 — The descent towards Vaset**: Vasetvatnet below you with the mountains behind. Perfect closing shot.

**Tip:** Evening light between 19:00–21:00 in July gives golden tones that turn every phone photo into a winner. Morning rides before 08:00 give you the route almost entirely to yourself.

## Getting to Vaset — How to Reach the Start

Vaset is in Vestre Slidre municipality, approximately 30 km northwest of Fagernes. Getting there requires a little planning, but it is easier than you might think.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "From Oslo", value: "Approx. 3.5 hours", sub: "E16 to Fagernes, Rv51 to Vaset" },
{ label: "From Bergen", value: "Approx. 5.5 hours", sub: "E16 via Lærdal/Filefjell or Rv52 via Hemsedal" },
{ label: "From Fagernes", value: "30 min", sub: "Rv51 northward, turn off at Vaset" },
  { label: "By public transport", value: "Bus to Fagernes", sub: "Valdresekspressen from Oslo, local bus onward" }
]} columns={2} />

**By car:** Take the E16 from Oslo to Fagernes (approx. 3 hours). From Fagernes follow Rv51 northward towards Beitostølen. After approximately 20 km, turn off towards Vaset. Free parking in the centre with plenty of space — even on July weekends.

**By public transport:** Valdresekspressen (NorWay Bussekspress) runs Oslo–Fagernes daily, approximately 3.5 hours. From Fagernes there is a local bus connection to Vaset, but departures are infrequent — check innlandstrafikk.no. Alternatively: taxi from Fagernes (approx. 400 kr, book in advance). Bikes can be taken on Valdresekspressen for a surcharge — book a bike space when purchasing your ticket.

**Tip for early starters:** Drive up the evening before and stay at Gomobu Fjellstue or one of the cabins in the area. An early morning start on Panoramavegen — before 08:00 — gives you the route almost entirely to yourself, and the morning light over Jotunheimen is worth the early alarm.

## Panoramavegen Season Opening — Plan Your First Spring Ride

March is planning season. The mountain roads are still snow-covered, but experience shows that Panoramavegen is among the first high-mountain routes to open in Valdres.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Normal opening", value: "Mid-June", sub: "Varies 1–2 weeks depending on snowfall" },
{ label: "Earliest on record", value: "Late May", sub: "Low-snow years, south-facing sections first" },
{ label: "Latest on record", value: "Last week of June", sub: "After heavy snow winters" },
  { label: "Check status", value: "Call Gomobu Fjellstue", sub: "Or follow local Facebook groups" }
]} columns={2} />

**Why Panoramavegen opens relatively early:** The route sits at 900–1020 masl — lower than Mjølkevegen (up to 1100 masl) and Valdresflya (1389 masl). The south-facing terrain between Vaset and Nøsen melts faster than north-facing mountain slopes. The gravel road is also well drained and dries quickly after snowmelt.

**First-ride tips:**
- **Check conditions:** Early in the season there may be snow patches in shaded sections, especially on the north side of the loop between Flyin and Vaset. The gravel road is usually rideable, but you may encounter wet sections in the first few weeks.
- **Tyres and pressure:** Run slightly wider tyres (40 mm+) and lower pressure in the first weeks — wet gravel grips better with more contact area.
- **Layers and wind:** June mornings at 1000 masl can start at 5°C even when it is 15°C in Fagernes. Windproof jacket, buff and long gloves — you can always take them off.
- **Food:** Nøsen Fjellstue normally opens in step with the gravel road, but call ahead — service may be limited on the very first days. Bring extra food.

**The season-opening ritual:** Many local gravel cyclists have an unofficial tradition: the first ride on Panoramavegen marks the start of the season. Post your ride on Strava with the tag «sesongstart» — you're guaranteed kudos from other Valdres cyclists.

## Panoramavegen with Children — Age Guide

Panoramavegen is family-friendly, but "family-friendly" means different things for a 6-year-old and a 13-year-old. Here is what works for which age.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Under 6", value: "E-bike + trailer only", sub: "Too long for little legs — child seat or trailer behind an e-bike works. The half version (14 km) is realistic." },
{ label: "6–8 years", value: "Half version (14 km)", sub: "Start from Nøsen, ride the eastern side back. Skip the opening climb. Nøsen Fjellstue = perfect reward." },
{ label: "9–11 years", value: "Full loop (28 km)", sub: "Can manage the loop with 2–3 stops. Set pace targets per leg, give them responsibility for navigation — it motivates." },
  { label: "12+", value: "Full loop + extended", sub: "All of Panoramavegen in one go. Challenge: ride counter-clockwise for more climbing. Combine with the Gomobu extension (44 km)." }
]} columns={2} />

**Motivation tips that actually work:**

- **Give them the map.** Let the child navigate with offline maps on a phone or a paper map. Responsibility = engagement.
- **Kilometre counter.** Children love numbers. "We've ridden 10 km — only 18 to go!" works surprisingly well.
- **Nøsen as an intermediate goal.** "We'll ride to the mountain lodge, then see how it goes." A lower threshold than "we're doing 28 km". After waffles and hot chocolate, most children will want to carry on.
- **Photo challenge.** Give each child the task of taking their 5 "best photos". Vote on them afterwards. Stop at the 5 photo points listed above.

**What you MUST pack with children:**

- Extra layers — children get cold faster at 1000 masl than you expect
- Snacks every 30 minutes (energy bar, fruit, biscuits)
- Chocolate milk or juice for the Nøsen stop
- Plasters and wet wipes (gravel road + children = grazed knees)
- Fully charged power bank — a dead battery on a child's phone is a crisis

## Segment Analysis — What Do You Face Kilometre by Kilometre?

Panoramavegen can be broken into four distinct segments. Each has its own character, surface and demands on body and bike. Plan your breaks and food intake accordingly.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Km 0–7: Vaset → Nøsen", value: "Steady climb 3–5%", sub: "Wide gravel road, well maintained. Starts in birch forest, crosses the treeline at km 5. Wind-exposed final 2 km. Best surface on the whole loop." },
{ label: "Km 7–14: Nøsen → Flyin", value: "Rolling, net flat", sub: "Open high-mountain terrain 980–1020 masl. Narrower road, occasionally rocky. Best viewpoints here — Jotunheimen to the west, Hallingskarvet to the south. Stop at Nøsen Fjellstue." },
{ label: "Km 14–21: Flyin → Gomobu junction", value: "Gradual descent", sub: "Transition from high mountain back to birch forest. Longest continuous descent (4 km, 2–4%). Loose gravel in the bends — keep speed in check. Consider the Gomobu extension here." },
  { label: "Km 21–28: Gomobu junction → Vaset", value: "Flat with short rollers", sub: "Half gravel, half tarmac for the final 3 km into Vaset. Easiest segment. Wind-sheltered in the forest. Finish via Vaset centre." }
]} columns={2} />

**Tyre choice per segment:** The first 14 km are the most demanding — coarse gravel, occasional loose stones and some drainage channels. 38 mm is the minimum, 42–45 mm ideal. The second half is kinder and can be ridden comfortably on 35 mm. Riding the full loop: choose tyres suited to the most demanding segment.

**Water tip:** There are no streams with safe drinking water along the road. Fill your bottles at Nøsen Fjellstue (km 7) — it is the only refill point before you are back in Vaset. Bring at least 1 extra litre on warm days.

---

## Panoramavegen by E-Bike — Battery Plan and Pace Strategy

An e-bike makes Panoramavegen accessible to everyone — but 28 km on gravel at 900–1020 masl drains the battery more than you might expect. Here is a concrete plan.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Expected battery use", value: "40–60% of full charge", sub: "Depends on weight, wind and use of turbo. Gravel demands 20–30% more than tarmac over an equivalent distance." },
{ label: "Eco mode: km 0–7", value: "Save the battery on the climb", sub: "Most riders can handle a 3–5% gradient in Eco. Save Tour and Turbo for when you need them. Consumption: approx. 10–15% of battery." },
{ label: "Tour mode: km 7–21", value: "Enjoy the high plateau", sub: "Rolling terrain with short kicks. Tour gives steady speed without draining the battery. Consumption: approx. 20–25%." },
{ label: "Eco or off: km 21–28", value: "Descent + flat", sub: "Switch off assist on the descents. Save the last few percent for any surprise climbs. Consumption: approx. 5–10%." },
{ label: "Reserve capacity", value: "Keep 20% in reserve", sub: "Headwind on the final leg or a detour via Gomobu? 20% reserve is your insurance. Never drain the battery below 15%." },
  { label: "Charging en route?", value: "Nøsen Fjellstue only", sub: "Ask at reception — they usually have a socket available. 30 minutes of charging gives approx. 10–15% extra." }
]} columns={2} />

**E-bike-specific tips for Panoramavegen:**

- **Tyre pressure:** Run 0.2–0.3 bar lower than on tarmac. The extra weight from the motor and battery is offset by better grip on gravel.
- **Descent km 14–18:** The motor weight makes the bike heavier in corners. Brake earlier than you would on a regular bike. Use both brakes evenly.
- **Wind:** Northerly wind is most common. Riding clockwise, you face a headwind on the final leg — Tour mode is worth its weight there. Counter-clockwise gives a tailwind home but a harder start.
- **Two e-bikes, one charger:** If you have one charger and two bikes, charge the one with the lower battery while you eat at Nøsen. 20 minutes makes a difference.

## Rain Plan — What Do You Do When the Forecast Is Uncertain?

Panoramavegen is above the treeline. That means: no shelter, no forest, nowhere to hide. When it rains at 1000 masl, it rains on you. Here is the plan.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Yr.no says 'partly cloudy'", value: "Ride! ✅", sub: "Light cloud cover often gives the best photo conditions — even light, dramatic sky" },
{ label: "30–50% chance of rain", value: "Consider an early start", sub: "Morning weather is often best. Start at 07:00–08:00, finish before rain showers at 12:00–14:00" },
{ label: "Over 50% chance of rain", value: "Have a plan B ready", sub: "Ride the half version (14 km) or choose a lower-altitude alternative" },
  { label: "Thunder warning", value: "Do not go up ⛔", sub: "Above the treeline + thunder = real danger. Choose a valley-floor alternative" }
]} columns={2} />

**Plan B routes when the mountains are closed by weather:**

1. **[Vasetvatnet rundt](/ruter/vasetvatnet-rundt)** (11 km, easy) — short loop along the lake, partly sheltered by birch forest. Works in light rain.
2. **[Vaset stølsvegen familierunde](/ruter/vaset-stolsvegen-familierunde)** (12 km, easy) — lower terrain, more tree cover, less exposed.
3. **Head down to [Slidre valley](/guider/slidre-dalen-sykkelguide)** (360 masl) — 500 metres lower, often dry when the mountain has rain. [Kulturveien](/ruter/slidre-lomen-kulturvei) is rideable in almost any weather.

**Rain tips for those who ride regardless:**

- Windproof jacket with hood > rain jacket. You sweat more in a rain suit than you get wet from drizzle.
- Wool next to skin — keeps you warm even when damp. Cotton is the enemy.
- Clear-lens glasses — raindrops in your eyes on a descent are dangerous.
- Slow down in the bends — wet gravel has half the grip of dry.
- **After the ride:** Check sauna/food directly with the accommodation before planning it as part of the ride.
