Oslo to Bergen by Bike via Valdres — Complete Stage Guide
Cycle Oslo–Bergen via Valdres and Kongevegen: 272 km over 5–7 days. Road cycling Fagernes–Beitostølen, Europe Nostra-winning gravel over Filefjell, Flåm and Bergensbanen. Norway's finest alternative to the Rallarvegen.
Oslo to Bergen by Bike via Valdres and Kongevegen
Most cycling guides send you to Rallarvegen. We'll show you something better.
There are two classic cycling routes between Oslo and Bergen. One goes through Numedal and over Rallarvegen — a spectacular option. The other follows the Valdres corridor through mountain farms, over Beitostølen and down the Kongevegen — Norway's first royal road, winner of the Europa Nostra Grand Prix, and one of Europe's most exceptional cultural heritage routes.
The Valdres route is shorter, more varied, and — we admit our bias — more beautiful.
Can you cycle from Oslo to Bergen via Valdres?
Yes. Oslo–Bergen via Valdres and Kongevegen is approximately 272 km of cycling over 5–7 days. The route passes through Fagernes, Beitostølen, over Valdresflya (Norway's highest public road at 1389 m) and down the historic Kongevegen to Lærdal. From Lærdal, a ferry to Flåm and train via Myrdal reaches Bergen. Mix of road cycling and gravel.
Route in Numbers
Stage Plan — Oslo to Bergen via Valdres
Stage 0: Oslo → Fagernes (transport)
Option A — Bus: Valdresekspressen from Oslo Bus Terminal to Fagernes takes about 3.5 hours. Bikes allowed in the luggage compartment. Cheaper and simpler than train — and you start cycling right in the heart of Valdres.
Option B — Cycling (2 days): Route via Hønefoss and Begnadalen — 170 km, about 1,200 m elevation. A great opening, but demanding. Most cyclists take the bus to Fagernes and save energy for the mountains.
Accommodation: Fagernes has hotels, a hostel and campsites.
Stage 1: Fagernes → Beitostølen
Distance: 67 km · Elevation: 1,100 m · Surface: Asphalt · Difficulty: Challenging
The most iconic road cycling day. From Fagernes, you climb steadily southwest through Slidredalen, past Lomen stave church and up toward Beitostølen (900 m above sea level). A total of 1,100 metres over 67 km — long, relentlessly hard. Rewarded with views over the Jotunheimen mountains.
Highlights:
- Lomen stave church (9th century, directly on the route)
- Panoramic views over Jotunheimen from Røsshem
- Beitostølen centre — accommodation, restaurants, bike shop
Accommodation Beitostølen: Beitostølen Høyfjellsenter, Beitostølen Resort, mountain lodges, self-catering cabins.
Stage 2: Beitostølen → Valdresflya → Filefjell
Distance: 45 km · Elevation: 900 m · Surface: Asphalt (Rv51) · Difficulty: Challenging
Today's literal high point. From Beitostølen you climb Valdresflya to 1,389 m — Norway's highest public road. The top is open mountain plateau with Jotunheimen peaks on all sides. Then down to Tyinkrysset and southwest toward Vang.
Highlights:
- Valdresflya plateau at 1,389 m — Norwegian record for public road
- 360° Jotunheimen panorama
- Bitihorn (1,607 m) rises to the left
- Tyin and Bygdin — alpine lake landscape
Accommodation Filefjell/Vang: Eidsbugarden Fjellstue, Tyin-Filefjell area, Vang centre.
Stage 3: Kongevegen over Filefjell → Borgund → Lærdal
Distance: 55 km · Elevation: 980 m (mostly descending) · Surface: Gravel and historic road · Difficulty: Moderate
The historical centrepiece. Kongevegen was built 1790–1793 as Norway's first road over Filefjell — the royal postal route between east and west. In 2017 it won the Europa Nostra Grand Prix, Europe's highest cultural heritage prize. Half the route runs on original 1793 road surface.
Note: Some protected sections (Vindhella, Kvamskleive, Øygardsvegen) are walk-only — you must carry or push your bike. These sections total 2–3 km and are the scenic highlights of the day.
Highlights:
- Vindhella — the S-bends from 1793, best-preserved road surface in Europe
- Borgund Stave Church — Norway's best-preserved stave church (1150s, 2 km from route)
- Lærdalsøyri — historic trading town by the fjord
Accommodation Lærdal: Lærdal Hotel, Lindstrøm Hotel (historic), various B&Bs.
