<AnswerBox
question="What is Offroad Valdres and when does it take place in 2026?"
answer="Offroad Valdres is a gravel and mountain bike race in the Beitostølen area, known for the concept of 'free from bars and gels' — the route is supplied with local food and natural drink stops instead of industrial sports nutrition. In 2026 the race takes place on 1 August. Distances: 15 km (children), 30 km, 60 km and 90 km."
/>

On 1 August 2026, hundreds of cyclists gather for Offroad Valdres in the mountains around Beitostølen. It's one of Norway's most enjoyable gravel races — not because it's easy, but because it's done right.

No energy bars. No gel packets. Instead: local food from mountain lodges and summer farms, fresh water from the mountains and a route that winds through some of the most beautiful gravel terrain in the country.

**30 km** is the entry-level distance for adults who haven't competed in gravel events before. You don't need to be super fit, but you should have some kilometres in your legs from April through July.

**60 km** is the middle tier and the most popular distance. Terrain with a mix of loose gravel, hardpacked mountain road and some technical sections. Expect 4–5 hours in the saddle.

**90 km** is for the serious riders. Demanding mountain terrain, long duration and 1,800 metres of climbing. You'll need structured training from spring and gravel experience from longer rides.

## "Free from bars and gels" — what does that mean in practice?

Offroad Valdres has built a concept around local, real food at feed stations. Expect:

- Home-made waffles and flatbreads from mountain farms
- Fruit, nuts and dried meat
- Broth and warm drinks in cooler weather
- Fresh water from mountain springs

For those who can't tolerate regular sports nutrition, or who simply prefer real food on the go, this is a dream. You don't need to carry more than one or two bottles and a small personal emergency snack.

## How to prepare

### April–May: build your base

Start with steady rides 2–3 times per week. For the 30 km distance, 3–4 hours on the bike per week is enough. For 60 km you should gradually work up to 6–8 hours. For 90 km you'll need structured interval sessions and long weekend rides (4–6 hours).

The Beitostølen loop (35 km, [Beitostølen Gravel Loop](/ruter/beitostolen-gravel-loop)) is a good reference test early in the season.

### June: gravel-specific training

When the mountain roads open (typically mid-June), start riding on gravel surfaces. Technical gravel riding is different from tarmac — you need more power control, lower tyre pressure and a good position for longer rides.

[Golsfjellet Gravel Loop](/ruter/golsfjellet-gravel) (65 km, 1,200 hm) is a perfect simulation ride for the 60 km distance.

### July: sharpen and recover

Final four weeks: ramp up to 2–3 hard interval days, then taper in the last week. Don't try new things just before the race (shoes, saddle, gears). Do one test ride on the gravel around Beitostølen.

## Pack right for Offroad Valdres

Even though food is provided at feed stations, you need to be self-sufficient between them. Minimum checklist for 60 and 90 km:

- **2 water bottles** (0.75–1 L)
- **Windproof jacket** (mountain weather can turn quickly at 1,000 m above sea level)
- **Mini toolkit** (tyre levers, CO₂ cartridge or pump, patch kit)
- **Rechargeable lights** (forest sections can be dark, but avoid unnecessary weight)
- **Some cash** — some feed stations sell extra food

Wear cycling gloves. 90 km on gravel without them is unpleasant.

## Accommodation and logistics

Beitostølen village centre is the natural base. Right next to the start/finish with full services:

- [Beitostølen Resort](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Beitost%C3%B8len%2C+Norway&lang=nb) — Hotel with bike wash and secure bike storage
- Beitostølen Hyttegrend — cheaper option, book early recommended
- Camping in the Beitostølen area — some sites open from June

Ideally book in **May–June** for the 1 August weekend. Beitostølen is popular in peak season.

**Getting there:**
- Car: Beitostølen is 50 km north of Fagernes (Rv51). From Oslo approx. 4 hours.
- Bus: Valdresekspressen to Fagernes, local bus onward to Beitostølen.
- Bike: You can ride to the start from Fagernes ([Fagernes to Beitostølen](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen), 47 km) — but that's a lot the day before the race.

## Tips from experienced Offroad Valdres participants

**Drop your tyre pressure.** On loose gravel, lower pressure (1.5–2.0 bar for 40 mm tyres) gives better control and comfort. Experiment beforehand.

**Save something for the second half.** The route tends to get tougher towards the end — especially for the 60 and 90 km distances. Start easy, finish strong.

**Work through the technical descents.** Brake gradually, don't brake suddenly on loose gravel. Shift your weight backwards. Control over speed on the way down.

**Drink more than you think you need.** In the mountains it's easy to forget your fluid needs, especially in cool weather. Drink at every feed station.

## Registration and more info

Offroad Valdres publishes the registration date and programme at [offroadvaldres.com](https://www.offroadvaldres.com/). Follow the site for updates on the 2026 edition — distances and date may be adjusted.

The race tends to fill up, especially the 60 km category. Register early.
