<AnswerBox
question="When does the cycling season open in Valdres 2026?"
answer="The valley routes in the lowlands are accessible from March–April. Mountain routes open gradually: Rv51 over Valdresflya typically in May–June, Mjølkevegen from late June, Beitostølen Trail Arena from June. Full season is July–September."
/>

The 2026 season is approaching. Here is a practical overview of what opens when — so you can plan your trip without arriving at a closed mountain road.

## March–April: The Lowlands Are Accessible

Cycling in Valdres is already possible now. The valley floor around Fagernes and Leira thaws early, and these routes are typically ready from March–April:

- **[Valdresbanen Sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei)** — car-free railway trail, flat and family-friendly. Open year-round.
- **[Fagernes–Leira road route](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen)** — tarmac along Rv51 in the valley floor. Rideable from March, but be prepared for gravel and sand after winter road cleaning.
- **[Aurdal Gravel Loop](/ruter/aurdal-gravel-rundtur)** — low-elevation gravel in Aurdal, typically snow-free from April.

Avoid higher-elevation gravel roads in March and early April — snowmelt turns them to mud. Wait until they have dried out.

## May: Snowmelt Under Way

  { label: "Rv51 Valdresflya", value: "Closed for winter — opens May/June" },
{ label: "Mjølkevegen high mountain", value: "Snow-covered until June" },
  { label: "MTB trails Beitostølen", value: "Usually closed until June" }

May is the transition season. The lowlands and south-facing valley sides are pleasant. The mountains are still winter-covered. Perfect for base training in the valley, but don't expect mountain crossings.

**Good May routes:**
- Strandefjorden loop (low elevation, varied terrain)
- Road route Fagernes–Slidre
- Gravel in Etnedal (lower sections)

## June: The Season Begins

June is when Valdres truly comes alive:

- **Rv51 / Valdresflya** typically opens in late May or early June. Check [Statens vegvesen road information](https://www.vegvesen.no) for the exact date. Once the road opens, cycling up to 1389 m above sea level is possible — but dress for winter at the summit.
- **Beitostølen Trail Arena** typically opens in the first or second week of June. The official date is announced on their website and social media.
- **Vaset and Panoramavegen** are accessible from early June on the lower sections.

## July–August: Full Season

This is peak season. Everything is open, cafés along the routes have regular opening hours, and the mountain farms sell local food.

- **Mjølkevegen** (Gol–Vinstra, 250 km) is best from late June to mid-September. The mountain lodges are open, the trails are dry, and organised tours are available.
- **Beitostølen Trail Arena** is in full operation with guided tours and maps available at the visitor centre.
- **Golsfjellet** and **Vaset**: all routes open.

**Book accommodation early for July.** The mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen fill up quickly — especially weekends in July.

## September: The Golden Season for Gravel

September is underrated. Less traffic, autumn colours, and the routes are still open.

- Mjølkevegen rides well until mid-September.
- Beitostølen Trail Arena closes for the season around 15 October.
- Valdresflya stays open until snow forces closure — some years well into November.

## October: End of Season

The valley routes are accessible throughout October. Mountain routes close one by one as snow settles. Rv51 over Valdresflya officially closes for winter — the date varies.

## Practical Planning Guide

**Planning Mjølkevegen?**
Book the mountain lodges (Golsfjellet Fjellstue, Gomobu, Gjendebu area) 2–4 months in advance for July trips. See the [Mjølkevegen guide](/artikler/2026-03-08-mjolkevegen-komplett-guide) for stages and logistics.

**Planning Valdresflya?**
No booking required — but check road conditions in the days before. Rv51 can have short-term closures due to weather even in the middle of the season.

**Planning Beitostølen Trail Arena?**
Day tickets can be purchased on-site or via their website. Bike rental (including e-bike and full-suspension MTB) is available in Beitostølen village centre.
