# Mjølkevegen Nord — 3-day adventure loop via Bygdinsjøen
Mjølkevegen is Norway's most famous gravel route — 250 km from Vinstra to Gol. But did you know that the northern section can be cycled as a self-contained 3-day loop?
**Mjølkevegen Nord** takes you through the very best of Valdres: the high mountain plateaus around Bygdinsjøen (1060 m a.s.l.), a historic boat cruise with D/S Bitihorn, cycling on Kongevegen over Filefjell and overnight stays at authentic mountain lodges.
<AnswerBox question="What is Mjølkevegen Nord?" answer="Mjølkevegen Nord is the northern variant of Mjølkevegen — a 3-day loop from Beitostølen via Slettefjell, Bygdinsjøen (1060 m a.s.l.) and Kongevegen over Filefjell. Total 95–120 km with 1800–2200 hm of climbing. A cruise with D/S Bitihorn on Bygdinsjøen is the highlight. Season: approx. 20 June – 10 September." />

## Why the northern Mjølkevegen?
Most people cycle Mjølkevegen south–north or north–south over 4–5 days. But the northern section — from Beitostølen via Bygdin to Filefjell — contains something unique: an active mountain lake at 1060 m a.s.l. and one of Norway's oldest travel routes.
**Three things set Mjølkevegen Nord apart from the rest:**
1. **Bygdinsjøen cruise** — D/S Bitihorn is a historic wooden boat that has operated on Bygdinsjøen and Vinstrivann since 1912. A summer day on this ferry crossing is an extraordinary experience.
2. **Kongevegen over Filefjell** — Norway's oldest official postal route (from the 1700s), now a 55 km gravel route that stays below 1000 m a.s.l. and gives you a sense of historic travel.
3. **Slettefjell summer farm** — A historic mountain dairy in active operation, with direct sales of brown cheese, sour cream and local food straight from the farm.

## 3-day stage plan
### Day 1: Beitostølen → Slettefjell → Vaset (35–40 km)
**Start:** Beitostølen centre (700 m a.s.l.)
**End:** Vaset mountain lodge (900 m a.s.l.)
**Distance:** 35–40 km · **Climbing:** ~600 hm
From Beitostølen you cycle south along Rv51 and turn up towards Slettefjell (780 m a.s.l.). Here lies **Slettefjell summer farm** — stop and buy local food. Continue up towards Stølsvidda and down to Vaset.
This stage is technically easy but demanding in terms of climbing. You cycle through some of Norway's most densely populated mountain pasture landscape — and you can hear the cowbells from animals grazing on the plateaus in summer.
**Accommodation:** Vaset Høifjellshotell or simple cabins
**Tips:** Take Day 1 easy — your body needs warming up. Allow time for the Slettefjell stop (10–15 min). The evening at Vaset is usually quiet and pleasant — stunning views towards Jotunheimen from the plateau.
---
### Day 2: Vaset → Bygdin → D/S Bitihorn → Eidsbugarden (30–35 km + boat)
**Start:** Vaset (900 m a.s.l.)
**End:** Eidsbugarden (1060 m a.s.l.)
**Distance:** 30–35 km cycling + approx. 40 km boat (D/S Bitihorn)
This is the highlight. From Vaset you cycle north towards Bygdin along a dirt road with views towards Jotunheimen's peaks. The climb up to Bygdinsjøen (1060 m a.s.l.) is gradual but consistent.
**Bygdin Høifjellshotel** is the departure point for the D/S Bitihorn cruise. The boat sails Bygdinsjøen and Vinstrivann — a stretch of approx. 40 km through untouched Jotunheimen nature, with peaks like Bitihorn and Koldedalseggen as walls on either side.
D/S Bitihorn sails approx. 15 June – 15 September. Departure times vary — check routes and times at [jvb.no](https://jvb.no) or directly via Jotunheimen Fjellstuer.
**From Eidsbugarden** (the western end of Bygdinsjøen) it is a short cycle (or continue by boat to Fondsbu) onward towards Kongevegen.
**Accommodation:** Eidsbugarden Høifjellshotell — one of Norway's oldest tourist facilities (1891)
**Tips:** Book your place on D/S Bitihorn well in advance in summer — the boat is popular and has limited capacity for bicycles.
---
### Day 3: Eidsbugarden → Kongevegen → Filefjell → Vang → Beitostølen (40–50 km)
**Start:** Eidsbugarden (1060 m a.s.l.)
**End:** Beitostølen (700 m a.s.l.)
**Distance:** 40–50 km · **Climbing:** ~600 hm · **Descent:** ~900 hm
From Eidsbugarden you take the route down towards Vang in Valdres (approx. 20 km dirt road/tarmac, net downhill). Here you join **Kongevegen over Filefjell** — the historic postal route from 1793.
[Kongevegen over Filefjell](/ruter/filefjell-kongevegen) is 55 km in total (Vang to Lærdal), but you only need the eastern section to the Filefjell summit and back. Alternatively: take Rv52 back to Beitostølen from the Borgund side — more tarmac but faster.
For the classic loop: Vang → Filefjell (20 km, 400 hm) → Heggenes → Beitostølen (20 km, partly tarmac). Total Day 3: approx. 50 km.
**Tips:** Day 3 has the most tarmac of the three days. Start early to make it back to Beitostølen in good time. The Kongevegen summit at the Maristuen segment has a historic atmosphere — cobblestones and old road construction.

## Practical information
### Bike type
A gravel bike or hardtail MTB with at least 40 mm tyres is recommended. The surface alternates between compact dirt road and looser stone layers on the highest sections. An e-bike works excellently — the Bygdinsjøen loop is well suited for e-gravel.

## Packing list — what you need for 3 days
Three days in the high mountains requires more than a regular day trip. You stay at mountain lodges, but carry everything you need for a full day between each stop.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Bike type", value: "Gravel or hardtail MTB", description: "Minimum 40 mm tyres. E-bike works — charge fully at the mountain lodges each evening. Bring your charger." },
{ label: "Clothing", value: "Layering system", description: "Windproof jacket mandatory above 900 m a.s.l. — even in July. Merino base layer for cold mornings. Rain gear for safety." },
{ label: "Spare parts", value: "2 inner tubes + pump + multitool", description: "No bike shop between Beitostølen and Vang. Tubeless kit strongly recommended." },
{ label: "Food and water", value: "Lunch + snacks + 1.5L water", description: "No shops along the way on Day 2. Order packed lunches at the mountain lodges. Fill water from streams above 800 m a.s.l." },
{ label: "Navigation", value: "Offline maps on phone", description: "Weak mobile coverage Bygdin–Eidsbugarden. Download GPX track and offline maps BEFORE departure." },
{ label: "Luggage", value: "Bikepacking bags or day pack", description: "Light back > heavy body. Use a saddle bag and handlebar bag rather than a large backpack." }
]} />
**Rule of thumb:** Pack for the coldest hour, not the warmest. At 1060 m a.s.l. the temperature difference between sun and shade can be 10–15 °C — even in midsummer.

## Weather and wind — timing and strategy
Mountain weather changes fast. With three days at 900–1060 m a.s.l., good timing matters.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Best week", value: "Week 28–32 (July)", description: "Most stable weather, longest days, all mountain lodges open. Also the busiest time on D/S Bitihorn." },

{ label: "September", value: "Autumn season", description: "Short days and cool, but calm weather and autumn colours. Check that D/S Bitihorn is still sailing." },
{ label: "Wind", value: "Southwest dominant", description: "Bygdinsjøen lies exposed — strong headwind from the southwest is common. Plan stages so you have the wind at your back on Day 2." },
{ label: "Rain strategy", value: "Flexible Day 2", description: "Day 2 is the most weather-dependent (boat + open mountain). If you have flexibility — swap Day 2 and Day 3 in case of bad forecast." },
{ label: "Temperature", value: "8–18 °C typical July", description: "Night frost possible in June and September. Daytime temperature 15–20 °C in sun, but 8–12 °C in overcast wind." }
]} />
**Weather services:** Check yr.no for Bygdin, Vaset and Filefjell individually — the three locations can have very different weather due to topography. A storm from the west hits Filefjell first, while Bygdinsjøen may be sheltered.
---
## Variants and alternatives
**Shorter variant (2 days):**
Skip the Slettefjell/Vaset stage. Start Day 1 directly from Beitostølen to Bygdin (25 km), take D/S Bitihorn on Day 2 and cycle back via Vang.
**Combined with the standard Mjølkevegen:**
Cycle northward on Mjølkevegen from Gol/Golsfjellet via Vaset to Beitostølen (3 stages), then take the "Nord variant" as a bonus Day 4–5 for those who want to experience the wildest nature along the Jotunheimen edge.
**For families with children:**
The boat trip alone is an adventure for children. Consider just Day 2 (Vaset → Bygdin → D/S Bitihorn) as a day trip without overnight stays, based at Vaset or Beitostølen.
