Mjølkevegen — The Complete Guide to Norway's Best Gravel Route
Everything you need to know about Mjølkevegen: daily stages, accommodation, transport, packlist, e-bike, opening times and practical tips. Updated 2026.
What is Mjølkevegen and how do you cycle it?
Mjølkevegen is a 250 km gravel route through Valdres' mountain farm landscape, part of National Cycling Route no. 5. The route runs between Vinstra/Skåbu and Gol, with overnight stays at mountain lodges along the way. Typically cycled over 3–5 days. Usually opens in mid-June.
Mjølkevegen is Norway's most talked-about gravel route — and for good reason. 250 kilometres through one of Europe's most active mountain farming areas, with local food, spectacular plateaus and almost zero car traffic. The route attracts cyclists from around the world, but it is entirely achievable with everyday fitness and a few days of holiday.
This guide gives you everything you need: daily stages, accommodation, practical logistics, e-bike tips and the things nobody else tells you.
The Route in Brief
Daily Stages
The route is flexible — you set your own pace. Here is a classic 4-day plan:
Day 1: Skåbu → Fagernes (approx. 60 km · 700 hm)
Starting in Skåbu (the Gudbrandsdalen side) and climbing into Valdres. Varied terrain with fine views towards Jotunheimen to the north. Overnight in Fagernes town centre.
Day 2: Fagernes → Hande/Røn (approx. 65 km · 850 hm)
The heart of Mjølkevegen — you ride through the densest mountain farm landscape. Buy local food at the farms along the way. The Røn/Hande area has basic accommodation.
Day 3: Hande → Golsfjellet (approx. 55 km · 900 hm)
The toughest stage, with beautiful mountain terrain across Golsfjellet. Overnight at Storefjell or Golsfjellet mountain lodge.
Day 4: Golsfjellet → Gol (approx. 70 km · 750 hm)
The final stage with a satisfying flow down towards Hallingdal. Gol has train and bus connections home.

E-Bike on Mjølkevegen
With an e-bike, Mjølkevegen is accessible to far more riders:
Charging strategy: Bring a spare charger. Call your accommodation in advance to confirm they have power available. Most farms and lodges do, but it is not guaranteed.
Recommended stage plan with e-bike: 3 days (combine days 3 and 4 above into one longer day).
Packlist
Bike and equipment:
- Gravel bike or MTB with wide tyres (min. 40mm) — narrower road tyres struggle on the gravel
- Puncture repair kit, pump, multi-tool, spare inner tube × 2
- Luggage: 2 panniers or large backpack (max. 10 kg)
Clothing (4 days):
- 2× technical base layer
- 2× cycling shorts + bib shorts
- 2–3 cycling jerseys
- Rain jacket (mandatory — Valdres weather is unpredictable)
- Warm gloves and skull cap (mornings are cold well into August)
Food:
- Packed lunch (mountain farms are not always open)
- Emergency ration 500 kcal × number of days
- Water bottle × 2 — water sources are available along the route
Season and Weather
Mjølkevegen is typically snow-free from mid-June to the end of September. Best period: July and the first half of August — the mountain farms are in full operation and the food is at its best.
Weather: summer weather in Valdres is unpredictable. Expect sunshine in the morning and thunderstorms in the afternoon during July. Always carry a rain jacket.

What Nobody Tells You
- The mountain farms are not always open. Check visitvaldres.no for which farms offer food service during your travel dates.
- The gravel varies. Some sections are compact and fast. Others are loose and draining. Do not plan your average speed based on flat tarmac roads.
- Mobile coverage. Weak to none on some stretches between mountain lodges. Download the GPX file offline.
- Bike shops: The nearest are in Fagernes and Gol. Bring the spare parts you need.
- Mjølkevegen is not flat. 3200 hm over 250 km means continuous short and medium climbs — long flat sections are rare.
