What is Mjølkevegen Grand Tour?
Mjølkevegen Grand Tour is the complete cycling experience on Mjølkevegen — 8 days from Lemonsjøen (Tessanden) to Kamben (Golsfjellet). Approximately 260 km gravel over 6 cycling days. The route includes the M/B Bitihorn cruise across Bygdinsjøen (1.5 hours), the historic Kongevegen section, Sputrefossen, Syndinstøga, Stølsvidda, and finishes at Kamben Høyfjellshotell (+47 32 07 39 00). Season: June–September. Tour operator price: 12,000–18,000 NOK/person. DIY: approx. 3,500–6,000 NOK/person.
What makes Grand Tour special?
Grand Tour is not just Mjølkevegen — it is the complete experience of everything the route has to offer. Where the standard route (Vinstra–Gol, 4 stages) takes you through the heart of the mountain landscape, Grand Tour adds three unique elements:
1. The M/B Bitihorn cruise (day 4) The historic steamboat M/B Bitihorn takes you from Bygdin (1,065 masl) across Bygdinsjøen to Eidsbugarden — a 1.5-hour crossing of one of Norway's highest mountain lakes. The views towards Jotunheimen are exceptional. The cruise is only possible to experience from Mjølkevegen — not from any other cycling route in Norway.
2. Syndinstøga and the Syndin lakes (day 5–6) The least-known part of Mjølkevegen. Syndinstøga is a mountain lodge between Midtre and Nordre Syndinsjø — an active summer farm with a café, local food, and lavvo accommodation. From here the trail over Grønnsen (trail, not road) takes you back towards Gomobu via the southern side of the Syndin lakes.
3. Panoramavegen (day 7) The scenic side road from Gomobu to Kamben, parallel with Mjølkevegen but higher up in the terrain. Flat, easy riding — and with panoramic views towards Jotunheimen and Hemsedal.

8-day itinerary
Day 1 — Travel to Lemonsjøen (no cycling)
Getting there:
- Valdresekspressen bus from Oslo to Fagernes (approx. 3 hours), then local bus further up
- Alternative: direct bus from Oslo to Tessanden (check timetables)
Lemonsjøen Fjellstue is a classic DNT trail lodge in Jotunheimen national park. The surrounding area offers short hikes and the chance to test your bike on local gravel roads before the main cycling days begin.
Day 2 — Lemonsjøen → Ruten Fjellstue (59 km, 750 hm)
Start: Lemonsjøen (1,051 masl) End: Ruten Fjellstue, Espedalen Time: 5–7 hours
The first cycling day takes you through Murudalen — a quiet valley landscape with gravel road and little traffic. You follow the rivers Sjoa and Muru downhill, pass the lakes Slangen and Olstappen, and arrive at Ruten Fjellstue in Espedalen.
Note: Ruten Fjellstue lies in Gudbrandsdalen, one of Norway's most famous moose areas — one of Europe's densest moose populations roams here. Slow down near forest edges.
Day 3 — Ruten Fjellstue → Bygdin Høifieldshotell (63 km, 870 hm)
Start: Ruten Fjellstue, Espedalen End: Bygdin Høifieldshotell (1,065 masl) Time: 5–7 hours
Today's route follows the beautiful Jotunheimvegen — a historic mountain road that climbs steadily through summer farm landscape. You cycle along Vinstrevatn, pass grazing cattle, sheep and goats, and can take a detour to Synshorn (1,457 masl) for panoramic views over Jotunheimen.
Bygdin Høifieldshotell (built 1912) sits at 1,065 masl and is one of Norway's highest-situated hotels. The view over Bygdinsjøen is worth the trip in itself.
Optional activities:
- Hike to Bitihorn (1,607 masl) — 3-hour round trip
- Evening swim in Bygdinsjøen (cold, but possible in August!)
Day 4 — Bygdin cruise + cycling to Tyinkrysset (23 km + 1.5h cruise + 5 km hike)
Start: Bygdin Høifieldshotell End: Filefjellstuene, Tyinkrysset Elevation gain: 400 hm
Morning: Synshorn hike (5 km, approx. 2 hours) — starts right outside the hotel door. The summit (1,457 masl) offers unobstructed views towards the 2,000-metre peaks of Jotunheimen.
Afternoon: M/B Bitihorn cruise from Bygdin to Eidsbugarden. The historic boat (operated by JVB — Jotunheimen og Valdresruten Bilselskap) takes 1.5 hours through Bygdinsjøen. Tickets sold on board.
After the cruise: Gravel road from Eidsbugarden to Tyin along the Tyin lake. Option to detour into Koldedalen (towards Falketinden and Uranostinden). Then down on tarmac to Tyinkrysset.
Filefjellstuene is a modern mountain hotel with panoramic views. Book dinner in advance.
Day 5 — Filefjellstuene → Syndinstøga (53 km, 974 hm)
Start: Filefjellstuene, Tyinkrysset End: Syndinstøga (Syndinsjøene) Time: 5–7 hours
This is the Grand Tour stage that the standard route does NOT include — instead of finishing in Beitostølen, you continue along mountain roads towards the Syndin lakes.
The route follows quiet mountain roads through a landscape of summer farms and mountains. Syndinstøga is a gem — a small mountain lodge between Midtre and Nordre Syndinsjø with a café, local food (brown cheese, elk meat) and lavvo accommodation. The place is a gathering point for local farmers and cyclists.
Remember: Book food in advance (+47 61 36 41 00). Capacity is limited.
Day 6 — Syndinstøga → Gomobu Fjellstue (29 km, 423 hm)
Start: Syndinstøga (Syndinsjøene) End: Gomobu Fjellstue, Røn Time: 3–5 hours
Today's route follows the trail over Grønnsen along the southern side of the Syndin lakes back towards Gomobu. Parts of the route are trail (not gravel road) — 35–40 mm tyres recommended. In wet conditions the trail can be demanding.
Gomobu Fjellstue is a classic mountain lodge with good food and a warm fire. Book dinner in advance.
Day 7 — Gomobu → Kamben via Panoramavegen (35 km, 330 hm)
Start: Gomobu Fjellstue, Røn End: Kamben Høyfjellshotell, Golsfjellet (950 masl) Time: 3–4 hours
Final cycling day. Panoramavegen is a scenic high-altitude road parallel with Mjølkevegen — flat terrain and exceptional views towards Hemsedal and Jotunheimen. An easy, comfortable finish to the trip.
Kamben Høyfjellshotell has a terrace with panoramic views over Hallingdal. Treat yourself to a well-earned dinner — you've cycled 260 km!
Day 8 — Travel home
From Kamben: Local bus to Gol station (approx. 20 min, +taxi) From Gol: Vy train to Oslo S (approx. 2.5 hours) Alternative: Valdresekspressen bus from Fagernes via Kamben
