## Direction: West (Vinstra → Gol) or east (Gol → Vinstra)?
**West (Vinstra → Gol):** Most cyclists ride this direction. Prevailing headwind from the west is the main drawback. Train station at both ends.
**East (Gol → Vinstra):** Tailwind more likely. Gol is easy to reach by the Bergen train. Less popular — a quieter experience.

## 4-day stage plan (west — Vinstra → Gol)
### Day 1: Vinstra → Skåbu → Ruten Fjellstue
**50 km | 850 hm | Moderate**
Start at Vinstra train station (train from Oslo, 2.5 hrs). The first stage climbs through Espedalen — a gentle ascent of around 30 km. Dense forest, rivers and light traffic. Ruten Fjellstue is the first overnight stop. Book dinner in advance.

**Eat:** Ruten Fjellstue (book dinner in advance).
---
### Day 2: Ruten Fjellstue → Jotunheimvegen → Vaset
**70 km | 900 hm | Moderate–challenging**
The longest stage, but with great variety. Through the Jotunheimvegen area with views towards Galdhøpiggen on clear days. Buy brown cheese directly from mountain farms. Plan food and breaks yourself on this stretch; do not rely on a named hotel stop. End at [Vaset](/omrade/vaset) (900 masl).

**Eat:** Mountain farms along the way + Gomobu Fjellstue.

### Day 3: Vaset → Beitostølen → Haugseter
**65 km | 750 hm | Moderate**
The route passes through [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen) — a natural rest-day stop with restaurants, shops and services. Make sure to restock supplies and service your bike here. End at Haugseter Fjellstue, just north of Beitostølen — quiet and classic mountain lodge atmosphere.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Start", value: "Gomobu Fjellstue", sub: "900 masl" },
{ label: "Mid-stop", value: "Beitostølen", sub: "Shop, food, services" },

**Eat:** Beitostølen town centre + Haugseter Fjellstue dinner.
---
### Day 4: Haugseter → Gomobu → Storefjell (Gol)
**65 km | 700 hm | Moderate**
The final stage — descending towards Gol and Hallingdal. Gomobu Fjellstue is a great lunch stop. After Gomobu it is mostly downhill towards Storefjell Resort Hotel at [Golsfjellet](/omrade/golsfjellet). Finishing at Storefjell is a fitting end — a spa and a well-earned meal await. Bus or train home from Gol — see [transport to and from Valdres](/guider/transport-oslo-valdres-sykkel) for details.
