Mjølkevegen is Norway's most famous long-distance cycling route — and one of Europe's finest gravel experiences. Here is everything you need to know to plan the trip, from transport and accommodation to bike choice and budget.
---
## The route in brief
Mjølkevegen stretches **approx. 250 km** from Vinstra in Gudbrandsdalen to Gol in Hallingdal (or vice versa), through Valdres. The route follows old milk roads and mountain farm tracks that ran through **Northern Europe's most active summer farming landscape**.
- **Start:** Vinstra (south) or Gol (north)
- **Surface:** ~80% gravel roads and farm tracks, ~20% asphalt
- **Signage:** Marked in both directions with Mjølkevegen signs
- **Highest point:** Approx. 1,100–1,200 masl
The route is divided into four natural stages:
1. Vinstra/Skåbu → Ruten Fjellstue
2. Ruten → Bygdin/Beitostølen
3. Beitostølen → Stølsvidda/Vaset
4. Vaset → Gol

## Luggage transport
You don't have to carry all your luggage yourself. **The lokal operatør network** offers luggage transport between accommodation stops along Mjølkevegen, so you cycle light while your bags are transported ahead.
- Contact local operator at Beitostølen (check directly for current services) to book luggage transport
- Price range: check directly with the operator before booking
- Book well in advance — especially in high season

## Bike type
Mjølkevegen does not require a specialist bike, but the right bike makes the trip much better:

|-----------|----------|-----------|
| Gravel bike (35–45 mm tyres) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Ideal |
| Hardtail MTB | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very good |
| E-bike (gravel type) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Excellent, see below |

**Tyres:** Recommended minimum width 35 mm. 40–45 mm gives better comfort.
### E-bike on Mjølkevegen
E-bikes work excellently. Charging available at all accommodation stops. The assist means more riders can complete the route in 3 days. See our [e-bike guide for Mjølkevegen](/guider/mjolkevegen-elsykkel-guide).

## Frequently asked questions
**Can beginners cycle Mjølkevegen?**
Mjølkevegen is moderately challenging. Good fitness is an advantage, but the route is not extremely technical. An e-bike makes it accessible to most adults. Read our [beginner's guide](/guider/nybegynner-forste-sykkeltur-valdres).
**Do I need to book in advance?**
Yes — especially in July and August accommodation is fully booked. Book a minimum of 2–4 weeks ahead. Popular places such as Ruten Fjellstue can have waiting lists in high season.
**Can you cycle alone?**
Yes. The route is well marked and there are always other cyclists around during the season. Bring enough water and food between stops. Read our [guide to solo cycling in Valdres](/guider/solo-sykkeltur-alene-valdres).
**What about mobile coverage?**
Good mobile coverage in the valleys, somewhat limited on the high mountain plateau. Download maps offline (Maps.me or Komoot) before you set off.
**How long is Mjølkevegen really — 250 km or 228 km?**
You will see both figures, and both are "correct" depending on the source. The official Mjølkevegen network uses **250 km** as the total route corridor length from Vinstra to Gol including all official spurs and variants. GPS tracking apps (such as AllTrails, Komoot and Strava) often measure the actual central route at **approx. 227–230 km** because they follow one specific GPS track line without side roads. Both figures are correct for their purpose. Plan for the 250 km variant if you want the full experience; expect approx. 228 km on the GPS track.
