Evening Rides in Valdres
Short cycling routes perfect for an after-dinner ride. 5–15 km from Beitostølen, Fagernes, Vaset and Filefjell.
Evening Rides in Valdres
Dinner is digested, the evening sun hangs low over the mountains, and you have two hours to spare. Perfect for a short ride. Valdres has a surprising number of routes that work when you're not up for a full-day outing — but want a bit of fresh air and a view before turning in.
Are there short cycling routes in Valdres for evening rides?
Yes. From Beitostølen, Fagernes, Vaset and Filefjell there are routes of 5–15 km that take 30–60 minutes. Tarmac and gravel, light traffic, flat to gently rolling. Perfect after dinner in June–August when it stays light until midnight.
Why evening rides in Valdres are special
In June and July it stays light well past midnight. Temperatures drop to a pleasant 12–16°C, traffic disappears, and you have the roads to yourself. The murmur of the Begna river, no mosquitoes at altitude, maybe a moose along the forest edge. It's a different Valdres from the one you experience in the middle of the day.
Beitostølen — 3 evening favourites
Start from the hotel — no car needed. Beitostølen village centre is compact; you're out in nature within five minutes. Tip: Bring a light jacket. Temperatures drop fast in the mountains after 8 pm.

Fagernes — along Strandefjorden in evening light
Fagernes may have the finest evening cycling in Valdres. Strandefjorden mirrors the mountains on calm evenings, and the path along the eastern shore is flat and paved.
Evening tip for Fagernes: Strandefjorden is usually windless on summer evenings. Bring a camera — the sunset over Aurdalsåsen is worth the ride on its own.

Vaset — high-mountain evening above the treeline
At Vaset (900 m a.s.l.) evenings are cooler and the views are wider. The gravel roads around Vasetvatnet are perfect for a relaxed evening loop.
Above the treeline you have views in every direction. On clear evenings you can see the Jotunheimen peaks to the west. Bring a hot drink — it can get down to 8–10°C even in July.

Filefjell — Kongevegen in the midnight sun
Kongevegen over Filefjell is normally a full-day ride, but the first few kilometres from Maristuen are flat and lovely for an evening outing.
You ride the old king's road — the same route kings and pilgrims used to cross the mountains. Quiet, historic, and in the midnight sun of June almost surreally beautiful.

Etnedal — the valley's quietest evening routes
Etnedal is Valdres' most underrated evening-ride destination. Light traffic, a flat valley-floor road along the Dokka river, and a stillness you won't find closer to Oslo.
Bruflat village centre is start and finish. The heritage road along the valley passes active farms with grazing animals — slow down and enjoy the smell of freshly cut meadows. In June you'll hear wagtails and dippers along the Dokka. Tip: Etnedal has almost zero light pollution. If you're out on an August evening, take a couple of minutes to look up — the night sky is spectacular.

Aurdal — Slidrefjorden in golden evening light
Aurdal sits between Fagernes and Slidre, with Slidrefjorden as a mirror for the evening sky. Flatter than Beitostølen, quieter than Fagernes.
The road along Slidrefjorden in the evening is something special. The water is usually dead calm, and the light reflects the Jotunheimen silhouette to the west. An easy ride that suits everyone — including children on their own bikes.

Practical tips for evening cycling
- Lights: Carry lights from mid-August — it gets dark after 9 pm in September
- Clothing: A windproof jacket is essential. Temperatures drop quickly after sunset in the mountains
- Animals: Sheep and cattle can stand in the road on gravel tracks. Slow down and give them space
- Mosquitoes: Near water and rivers at lower elevations (Fagernes, Aurdal) there can be mosquitoes on calm evenings. At altitude (Vaset, Beitostølen) it's rarely a problem
- E-bike: Perfect for evening rides — short distances mean the battery always lasts
Seasonal overview for evening rides
Valdres is made for evening rides. Short distances, light traffic, and summer light that lasts. Bring a jacket, hop on the bike, and come back with a slower pulse and better sleep.
Evening cycling with children — an age-adjusted guide
Evening rides are golden for families. The kids have burned off their daytime energy, and the short distances mean nobody gets tired or grumpy. But it takes a little adjustment by age.
Three rules for evening rides with children:
- Halve the distance you think they can manage — tired children on bikes are no fun for anyone
- Plan a stop with something fun — swimming, an ice cream kiosk, a viewpoint, animal spotting
- Bring snacks — a packed snack rescues any ride that starts going wrong
E-bike tip for families: With an e-bike and a trailer or tag-along bike, you can take young children on routes that would normally be too long. The Beitostølen Kringla loop (12 km) is flat enough that you barely use the battery, but the distance is perfect with an e-bike and trailer.
Safety and gear for evening rides
Most evening rides in Valdres are safe and straightforward, but the mountains have their own rules — especially after sunset.
Rule of thumb: Allow double the time for the return leg. You ride more slowly in the dark, and you will stop to photograph the sunset at least three times. That's perfectly fine.
Sunset spotting — the best evening routes for views
Half the reason to ride in the evening in Valdres is the light. The sun hits the mountains from the west and paints everything gold and orange. Here are the routes with the best sunset views — timing depends on the season, but expect around 21:30–23:00 in June–July.
Photography tip: Golden light lasts longest in the mountains. Vaset and Beitostølen give 20–30 minutes of extra golden light compared with valley routes, because the horizon is lower. A phone camera is fine — turn off the flash and let the natural light do the work.
After the ride — evening food and rewards
An evening ride deserves a reward. Here's what's open late enough to work after a ride.
The picnic option: Many evening routes pass good rest stops by the water. Pack a thermos, some fruit and chocolate — a simple picnic by Strandefjorden or Vasetvatnet in the evening sun beats most restaurant experiences.
