<AnswerBox
question="What is the most important gear for gravel routes in Valdres?"
answer="A gravel or CX bike with 35–40 mm wide tyres, a windproof outer jacket and at least two bottle cages. Valdres has steep terrain, variable surfaces and temperature swings of 10–15 degrees from valley to mountain — your gear must handle all of this in a single day."

## Valdres is not one type of terrain

It's easy to assume that "gravel in Valdres" means one thing. It doesn't.

- **Mjølkevegen and Panoramavegen**: Wide, hard-packed gravel road, typical of Valdres. Smooth gravel, some loose sections.
- **Golsfjellet and Stølsvidda**: Narrower trails, more variable surfaces, some boggy and loose ground.
- **Valdresflya**: Long asphalt/gravel climb, highly exposed mountain terrain — wind and temperature drop are the main challenge.
- **Filefjell/Kongevegen**: Historic trail with some demanding sections, partly asphalt, partly old cobblestone road.

Your gear should work across all four. Here is what actually works.

## The bike

### The gravel configuration that works

A modern gravel racing bike (Gravel Alliance, Trek Checkpoint, Cannondale Topstone, Giant Revolt) is the best choice. Road bikes with narrow tyres work on paved mountain roads but struggle on gravel and loose surfaces.

**Drivetrain and gearing**: Valdres is steep. A 34-tooth chainring up front and 11-42 in the rear (or an equivalent 1x setup with a 10-52 cassette) gives you a low enough gear to spin steadily up long climbs without wrecking your knees. Do not underestimate the elevation — Valdresflya has 900+ metres of climbing, Mjølkevegen to Beitostølen has up to 700 hm.

**Geometry**: Comfort-oriented gravel geometry (longer stack, slacker head angles) is better than racing geometry for multi-day tours. Your back will thank you.

## Tyres — the single most important choice

### Width
**35–40 mm is the sweet spot for Valdres.** Narrower than 35 mm gives poor flotation on loose sections. Wider than 45 mm is rarely necessary and slows you down on the wide, hard roads.

### Tread
You want a tyre with low rolling resistance in the centre and grip on the sides:
- **WTB Riddler 37c / Resolute 42c** — good all-round choices
- **Panaracer GravelKing SK 35c** — proven on Norwegian mountain gravel
- **Schwalbe G-One Allround 38c** — fast in the centre, good edge grip

Avoid pure racing slicks (such as the Specialized Pathfinder Pro) on routes with loose sections — you will be slipping in boggy water.

### Tubeless
Strongly recommended. Mjølkevegen and Golsfjellet can have sharp stone sections and grassy patches. Tubeless handles punctures of 2–5 mm without requiring you to stop. Fill with Stans NoTubes or Orange Seal. Always carry two CO₂ cartridges and one spare tube for holes you cannot seal with sealant.

### Tyre pressure
Run **lower than you think**: 2.5–3 bar front, 2.8–3.2 bar rear for a 70–85 kg rider on 38c tyres. Lower pressure = better grip and more comfort on gravel. Running too high is the most common mistake among new gravel riders.

## Clothing — Valdres demands layers

The temperature difference between Fagernes (340 m a.s.l.) and the top of Valdresflya (1389 m a.s.l.) can easily be 12–15 degrees. A summer day with 22°C in the valley can mean 8°C and wind on the mountain.

### Base layer
- Cycling jersey with 3 rear pockets (standard)
- Cycling shorts with chamois padding (bib shorts are more comfortable on long rides)
- For early season (May–June) or autumn: long bib tights

### Mid layer
A thin merino or synthetic base layer can make all the difference on mountain crossings. Lightweight, packable, effective.

### Outer jacket
A windproof, lightweight rain jacket that fits in a rear pocket is not an accessory — it is standard kit in Valdres. Choose something under 200 grams. Assos Rain Jacket Evo, Rapha Classic Wind Jacket or equivalent.

### Hands and head
- Cycling glasses (see dedicated FAQ): category 2–3 lens for sun, clear/yellow for shade and early mornings
- Helmet with good ventilation (+ sun visor if needed)
- Thin finger gloves for cool mornings — especially in June and August/September
- Thin helmet cap for mountain crossings early and late in the season

## Bags and packing system

For day rides, two bottle cages plus a seatpost bag (0.5–1 litre) for repair kit is plenty. For multi-stage rides (Mjølkevegen, multi-day in Golsfjellet):

**Recommended bikepacking setup:**
- Handlebar bag 5–10 litres: sleeping bag, warm clothes
- Frame bag: tools, snacks, rain gear
- Saddle bag 10–16 litres: everything else
- Top bag: food and light kit you need quick access to

Avoid a backpack on long rides — it strains your shoulders and reduces heat dissipation. A light hydration vest (1–2 litres) is fine for short, intense rides.

## Tools and repair — the minimum kit

You are far from a bike shop on many of these routes. Always carry:

- **CO₂ cartridges x2** + valve tool
- **Spare tube** (even with tubeless — some holes are too large to seal)
- **Multitool** with 4, 5 and 6 mm hex keys + screwdriver
- **Chain link and quick link** (M12 chain fits most modern gravel setups)
- **Small pump** (Topeak Road Master Blaster or equivalent)
- **Tyre levers x2** (necessary for tubeless tyre changes)

Bike shops can be found in Fagernes and Beitostølen — see [Is there a bike shop in Valdres?](/faq/sykkelverksted-valdres)

## Navigation

GPS devices (Garmin Edge, Wahoo ELEMNT) are standard for gravel riders. Download GPX files from [Find a route](/ruter) and transfer to your device. Komoot and Strava work well in Valdres — [more on digital tools](/artikler/2026-03-08-strava-komoot-digital-sykkelplanlegging-valdres).

Mobile coverage is variable — download maps offline and note the start coordinates for longer routes.
