<AnswerBox
question="When should I start preparing for a Valdres cycling holiday in summer 2026?"
answer="Start training now — in March and April. Book accommodation preferably during March for popular spots like the mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen. Mountain routes are typically open from late May, with full accessibility from mid-June."
/>

## March: plan and train

You're probably sitting inside watching the snow fall. It's the best time to decide what kind of trip you want — and to start training.

**What to do now:**

- Decide on trip type: a day ride from Fagernes, a full Mjølkevegen traverse, or an MTB week at Beitostølen?
- Book accommodation for high season (July–August) — the mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen are popular and fill up fast
- Start aerobic base training: 3–4 sessions per week in zone 2 is enough

### The fitness foundation for Valdres

Valdres is a mountain landscape. Even the easiest routes involve climbing. Without a reasonable fitness level, the days will be hard.

**Minimum standard for a Valdres week:**
- Easy gravel or road: able to ride 2–3 hours in zone 2 without stopping
- Mjølkevegen (full): able to manage 5–7 hours per day for 5 days — you should have a couple of long rides of 100+ km in your legs
- MTB at Beitostølen Trail Arena: technical skill and balance matter more than fitness

## April: increase the load

In April you should start riding outside if conditions allow. Some gravel roads in the lowlands of Valdres are open as early as April, but the mountains are still closed.

**Training focus in April:**
- Add a longer ride on the weekend (3–5 hours)
- Practice eating and drinking on the bike — many people forget this
- Ride hills: find the steepest road near you and do repeats

**Booking reminder:** Hotels and cabins in weeks 28–30 (mid-July) book up fast. Check if you haven't done so already.

## May: season start in the lowlands

From May, the first Valdres routes open:

- Flat and low-lying gravel trails around Fagernes and the Slidre valley are typically clear from early May
- [Panoramavegen](/ruter/panoramavegen) from Vaset normally opens in late May
- [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) is partially open from around 20 May, but the Stolsvidda crossing may have snow into June

Note: May means drying trails after snowmelt. Use [Strava segments and local groups](/artikler/2026-03-08-strava-komoot-digital-sykkelplanlegging-valdres) to check actual conditions.

**Packing list — early season:**

- Full-finger gloves and merino wool base layer — mornings below 5°C are common
- Rain jacket: 100% necessary, always in the pack
- Sunscreen: UV intensity in the mountains is surprisingly high
- Spare tubes (2) and puncture repair kit: service is far away

## June: full season

From mid-June, Valdres is open for everything:

- [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) is traversable from around 15 June
- [Rv51 over Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya-rv51) normally opens in June — check road status at vegvesen.no
- Beitostølen Trail Arena normally opens during the first half of June

This is also the quietest period — fewer people than July–August, and the trails are fresh after winter.

## Gear: what's enough and what's overkill

You don't need the most expensive equipment to have a great trip. But some things are worth investing in:

**Absolutely necessary:**
- Cycling helmet and high-visibility clothing
- Functional rain gear (not a rain poncho)
- Cycling shoes or shoes with a stiff sole
- Mobile data and downloaded maps (Komoot works well offline)

**Good to have:**
- Padded cycling shorts — uncomfortable without them on long days
- GPS cycling computer
- Handlebar bag or musette for food and spare gear

**Can be borrowed or rented in Valdres:**
Bikes, helmets and accessories can be rented in [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes) and at [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen). You don't need to ship your bike if you don't have a suitable travel bike.

## Booking calendar: what you need and when

| Timing | What to book |
|--------|--------------|
| **Now (March)** | Mountain lodges along Mjølkevegen — fills up fast |
| **April** | Hotels and cabins for weeks 26–30 |
| **May** | Bike rental, guides and any shuttle service |
| **June** | Training rides and Valdresrittet preparation |

Note: we don't normally recommend markdown tables, but they work here as an overview. See the [accommodation guide](/artikler/2026-03-07-overnatting-sykkelruter-valdres) for more details.

## Valdresrittet 2026 — specific preparation

Is [Valdresrittet](/ruter/valdresrittet) your goal? There are a couple of things to do:

- **Registration:** normally opens in January/February — check valdresrittet.no for the 2026 date
- **Seeding:** based on previous race times or self-seeding — plan which wave to start in
- **Training distance:** the course is approximately 80 km with 2200 hm — make sure you have done at least 3 rides of 70+ km with climbing in your legs

See our own [Valdresrittet guide](/artikler/2026-03-07-valdresrittet-2026-forberedelse) for a complete preparation plan.

Season 2026 is just around the corner. The earlier you plan, the better the experience. Start with the simplest thing: decide what kind of trip you want — and book accommodation this week.
