<AnswerBox
question="Is Filefjell and Vang good for cycling?"
answer="Yes — Filefjell and Vang offer Valdres' most historic cycling experience. Kongevegen over Filefjell is a unique cultural route on gravel and cobblestones. For MTB there are technical forest roads and open terrain. Family-friendly valley routes along Vangsmjøsa provide flat and safe rides. The quietest and most distinctive part of Valdres."

Filefjell and Vang are the westernmost and quietest part of Valdres — a part that many cyclists miss because they take the E16 straight to Beitostølen. That's a shame. Here you'll find Norway's most historic cycling route, silent valley sides and a distinctive nature unlike the rest of Valdres.

## Kongevegen over Filefjell — the historic gem

[Kongevegen over Filefjell](/ruter/filefjell-kongevegen) is without doubt Norway's most historic cycling route. It is the old postal route and royal road between Oslo and Bergen, partly on cobblestones laid in the 18th century.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Distance", value: "62 km", sub: "One way" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "900 hm", sub: "Gradual climb toward the mountain" },
{ label: "Type", value: "Gravel + cobblestone", sub: "Varied surface" },
{ label: "Difficulty", value: "Moderate", sub: "Challenging sections" },
{ label: "Season", value: "Jun–Sep", sub: "Depending on snowmelt" },
{ label: "Time", value: "4–6 hours", sub: "One way from Lærdal" },
]} columns={3} />

The route starts in Lærdal in Sogn og Fjordane and climbs to Filefjellet (1100 masl) via historic sites such as Nystova (a restored royal lodging from the 18th century) and Ormelid. From here it's a gradual descent toward Tyinkrysset and further into Vang.

**What makes Kongevegen special?**

You literally cycle where Norwegian kings once rode. The sections of hand-laid cobblestone are well preserved. Along the way you pass simple mountain lodges where you can warm up and eat. The view over Filefjordane is something you won't forget.

**Practical:** The route is best cycled west–east (Lærdal → Vang) with the wind. Bus from Fagernes to Tyinkrysset if you want to avoid car transport. Bring packed lunch — catering options are limited along the way.

## MTB on Filefjell — nature trails with a historic feel

[Filefjell Nature Trails — MTB](/ruter/filefjell-skogsstier-mtb) is a network route with technical forest roads and trails in the terrain around the Filefjell summit. Approximately 35 km of marked trail in total, with options for beginners and experienced riders.

The routes are well marked and pass through birch forest, over boggy sections and along stream valleys. It's not Beitostølen Trail Arena — this is rawer and more untouched. That's precisely the point.

**Best tip:** Start from Tyinkrysset and take the route via the Rødungssetra forest road — it's technical enough to engage, but forgiving enough that intermediate riders have a great time.

## Smådalsrunden — hidden gem

[Smådalsrunden](/ruter/smadalsrunden) is a 28 km loop through Smådalen — a side valley off Vangsmjøsa that most tourists never discover. Easy terrain, quiet gravel road, practically no car traffic.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Distance", value: "28 km", sub: "Loop" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "420 hm", sub: "Evenly distributed" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "Gravel 80%", sub: "+ tarmac" },
{ label: "Time", value: "2–3 hours", sub: "Incl. stops" },
]} columns={2} />

The valley is full of old summer farm pastures and farmsteads. During the flowering season (July) the hillsides are dressed in wildflowers and herbs. Bring a packed lunch — there is no kiosk here.

---

## Vang Family Route — the flattest in Valdres

[Vang Familierunde](/ruter/vang-familierunde) is Valdres' flattest and most relaxed family route: 18 km along Vangsmjøsa with minimal elevation gain and light traffic.

The route is suitable for children from around age 6 and is safe for inexperienced cyclists. Along the lake you pass Vang church (stave church trail) and several lovely swimming spots.

**Pro tip:** Combine with a swim in Vangsmjøsa on a warm summer day. The water is surprisingly warm by Norwegian standards in August.

## Season and weather on Filefjell

Filefjell is generally drier than the west coast but wetter than the rest of Valdres. Check yr.no for Filefjell before you go — the mountain can have significantly different weather than Fagernes.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Season opens", value: "June", sub: "Depending on snow" },
{ label: "Best period", value: "July–August", sub: "Stable and dry" },
{ label: "Autumn", value: "Sept–Oct", sub: "Colours, but unstable" },
{ label: "Kongevegen snow-free", value: "approx. 15 June", sub: "Normal year" },
]} columns={2} />

## Transport and parking

**From Oslo:** Take the E16 to Tyinkrysset (approx. 3 hours). Parking at Tyinkrysset and in Vang town centre.

**From Fagernes:** 45 km along the E16 westward toward Lærdal. Bus route Fagernes–Lærdal stops in Vang and Tyinkrysset (check ruter.no for timetables).

**Bikes on the bus:** Valdres Bilruter allows bikes in the luggage compartment — call 61 36 52 00 and arrange in advance.

---

## Accommodation on Filefjell

**Nystova fjellstue** (at the Filefjell summit, 1040 masl) is the natural base camp for Kongevegen cyclists. Traditional Norwegian mountain lodge with beds, dinner and breakfast. Historic building from the era of the royal road — stay here if you only do one thing on Filefjell.

**Vang town centre** has a few good options: Vang Camping (cabins + tent pitches by Vangsmjøsa) and some farm accommodation nearby. Fagernes (45 km) has the widest hotel selection.

---

## Bike types

Kongevegen: gravel or hardtail MTB with wide tyres (38mm+). The cobblestone sections are fine on most bikes, but narrow road tyres are not recommended.

Nature trails MTB: hardtail or full suspension. The technical sections are more demanding on a hardtail, but doable.

Smådalsrunden and the Family Route: suitable for almost any bike type, including hybrids.
