E-bike in Valdres — Everything You Need to Know
Complete guide to e-biking in Valdres: best routes, range, charging, recommendations and tips for e-bikes on gravel, Mjølkevegen and Valdresflya. 2026.
Can you cycle Valdres on an e-bike?
Absolutely. Valdres is ideal for e-bikes — many gravel roads and varied terrain that would be demanding on a regular bike are manageable with a motor. Mjølkevegen, Stølsviddarunden and family routes around Beitostølen are particularly popular.
E-bikes have changed who can experience Valdres on two wheels. Routes that previously required peak fitness are now accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. But Valdres places some special demands on planning — especially around range and charging.
What makes Valdres great for e-bikes?
The gravel road network in Valdres is perfect for e-bikes: even surfaces, little traffic, and the pace is low enough that the battery lasts longer than on asphalt.
Recommended routes for e-bikes
🔋 Easy on an e-bike
Stølsviddarunden (38 km · 420 hm) The classic day route on Mjølkevegen — perfect for e-bikes. Visit active mountain farms and buy local food along the way.
Valdresbanen Cycle Path (12 km · flat) Car-free former railway route, perfect for families and beginners. No climbing, no stress.
Slettefjellrunden (45 km · 500 hm) Relaxed gravel loop with great views. Manageable for most people on an e-bike.
🔋 Moderate on an e-bike
Fagernes to Beitostølen (47 km · 680 hm) Classic day trip. With a good e-bike and 70 km range, this is doable for most. Plan charging in Beitostølen.
Mjølkevegen stage (day 1 or 2, 60–65 km) Cycle Mjølkevegen one stage at a time — one stage per day is realistic on an e-bike.
Panoramavegen (Vaset, 35 km · 600 hm) Beautiful mountain loop on an e-bike. Demanding on a regular bike, moderate with a motor.
🔋 Challenging on an e-bike (but doable)
Over Valdresflya (72 km · 1250 hm) Norway's highest main road by bike. On an e-bike this is achievable for fit riders, but the battery will likely run out — a plan B is necessary.
Range and planning
Rule of thumb: Plan for 70% of the stated range in Valdres terrain. If your bike has 90 km range → plan for 63 km per day.
Charging in Valdres
Charging is the most important thing to plan in advance:
- Fagernes town centre: Charging available at hotels and campsites
- Beitostølen: Charging at most tourist businesses — call and confirm in advance
- Mjølkevegen lodges: Varies. Noraker Gård and Haugseter offer charging — ask when booking
- Golsfjellet / Storefjell: Charging available at the resort
Tip: Always bring your charger. Not all places advertise charging, but most farms and guesthouses will help if you ask.
E-bike rental in Valdres
Don't want to bring your own?
- Beitostølen Helsesportsenter: E-bikes available in season
- Fagernes tourist office: Connects visitors with local rental options
- Intersport Beitostølen: Check whether they offer rental during your period
Book well in advance — e-bikes rent out quickly in high season.
E-bike regulations in Norway
- E-bike with max 250W motor and assist up to 25 km/h: no special rules — treated as a regular bike
- You may use all cycle paths and trails
- No helmet requirement (but strongly recommended)
- E-bikes with higher power or speed (S-pedelec): require moped registration and helmet
Practical tips
- Start early — the battery is full and the morning temperature is fresher
- Don't rely blindly on the battery indicator — it is imprecise below 20%
- Have a plan B — know which points along the route you can cut the ride short
- Gravel tyres ≥ 40mm — narrower tyres work harder and drain the battery faster
- Bike computer — see actual battery consumption per km, adjust pace as you go
- Warm layers — mountain temperatures and batteries don't like being below 5°C
