Electric bikes have changed Valdres for cyclists. Routes that previously required top fitness are now accessible to everyone. Here's everything you need to know — from battery planning to the best rides and charging.

Er Valdres bra for elsykkel?

Ja. Valdres er en av Norges beste elsykkel-destinasjoner. Elsykkelutleie finnes på Beitostølen og Fagernes. Mjølkevegen sykles på 3 dager med el (vs. 4–5 uten). Beitostølen Trail Arena er perfekt for eMTB. Lading på de fleste fjellstuer og hoteller.

Electric bike vs. regular bike in Valdres

Choose electric bike if you want:

  • See more scenery in less time
  • Cycle Valdresflya or Mjølkevegen without tiring yourself out.
  • Cycling with a partner who has different fitness levels
  • Focus on nature experience — not achievement

Choose regular bike if:

  • Fitness training is a goal in itself
  • You will have the pure feeling of mastery over the hilltop
  • You are already used to long, demanding trips

Both are equally valid choices. An electric bike often provides a better nature experience because you actually look around — instead of staring down at the asphalt and breathing heavily.

Rules for electric bicycles and eMTBs in Norway

Hvilke regler gjelder for eMTB i norsk natur?

Important to know

  • eMTB with max 250W / 25 km/h = bicycle. Fully permitted.
  • Allowed in Langsua National Park and Jotunheimen on existing trails
  • Allowed on all marked trails in Beitostølen Trail Arena
  • Helmet requirement for children under 15 years of age — recommended for everyone

Recommended e-bike tours in Valdres

1. Start here: Valdresbanen cycle path (12 km)

Car-free, flat railway route from Fagernes to Leira. Perfect first ride — learn how the electric bike reacts on hills and flats. Uses minimal battery.

2. The classic: Fagernes–Beitostølen (47 km, 680 hm)

A demanding day trip for a regular bike becomes a nice half-day trip on an electric bike. Well suited for beginners. Combine with a bus back to Fagernes.

3. Icon Route: Valdresflya (7 km from Beitostølen, 450 m above sea level)

From Beitostølen: manageable for most e-bikes with over 400 Wh. From Fagernes (22 km, 1020 hm): requires 625 Wh and eco mode the whole way. Start on eco — switch to boost on the steepest sections.

4. The Milky Way in 3 days (250 km total)

With electric bikes and luggage transport, Mjølkevegen is accessible to everyone. Fjellkjeden/Intersport offers rental and transport.

3-day breakdown by electric bike:

5. eMTB at Beitostølen Trail Arena

More than 100 km of marked trails — from green (easy) to black (expert). eMTB is ideal here: you can take the demanding red and black climbs repeatedly without draining your battery. Green and blue trails will last most batteries well over 3 hours of cycling.

Battery planning in Valdres

Rule of thumb for Valdres slopes:

Tip: Always buy with at least 10–15% battery capacity in reserve. The temperature drops in the high mountains — a cold battery gives a 15–25% shorter range.
