# Bygdin cycling guide — cycling at Norway's most spectacular mountain lake
Bygdin is a mountain lake you won't forget. 1060 metres above sea level, 18 km long, surrounded by Jotunheimen to the north and the Valdres mountains to the south. The water is deep blue, the air is thin, and the roads around it are a mix of old gravel tracks, asphalt and summer farm paths that make this one of Norway's most complete cycling areas above the tree line.
<AnswerBox question="Can you cycle around Bygdin?" answer="Not a complete loop — there is no continuous road around the entire lake. But you can cycle along the north side via the gravel road to Eidsbugarden (14 km), along the south side on trails (MTB), or combine with Fv51 over Valdresflya for a spectacular route. The season is normally mid-June to mid-September, depending on snowmelt." />

## Why Bygdin for cycling?
Bygdin is where Valdres meets Jotunheimen. It's not a tourist centre with shops and queues — it's a mountain hotel, a boat route and gravel roads in every direction. For cyclists that means:
- **10 mapped routes** from 14 to 50 km — gravel, road, MTB and family rides
- **1060 masl starting point** — you start above the tree line, with Jotunheimen panorama from the first pedal stroke
- **Eidsbugarden** at the western end — historic mountain lodge, and starting point for Norway's most famous mountain hikes
- **Minimal traffic** — Fv51 has moderate traffic in July, but the side roads are almost empty
- **Combination possibilities** — connect Bygdin with [Valdresflya](/guider/valdresflya-sykkelguide), [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen) or [Filefjell](/guider/filefjell-sykkelguide)

## Getting here
Bygdin is located at Fv51, between Beitostølen and Tyin. There is no public transport directly to the lake — you need a car, or you cycle here.
**From Beitostølen:** 30 km north on Fv51. Steady climb from 900 to 1060 masl. Good asphalt, moderate traffic in summer. The route [Beitostølen–Bygdin Fjellhotell](/ruter/beitostolen-bygdin-fjellhotell-landevei) covers this stretch.
**From Fagernes:** 75 km via Fv51 over Valdresflya. Alternatively via Rv33 and Fv51 over Tyin from the west — longer, but varied.
**From Vang:** 18 km up Fv51 with 590 hm elevation gain. Demanding climb, but the reward is there: [Vang–Bygdin climb](/ruter/vang-bygdin-fv51-klatring) is one of Valdres' classic ascents.
**Parking:** At Bygdin Fjellhotell — good car park, free.

## Route overview — 10 routes from Bygdin
### Gravel — what Bygdin does best
Bygdin is in its element on gravel. Old summer farm roads and mountain tracks in every direction, with surfaces ranging from compact gravel to rocky mountain road.
**[Bygdin – Along the Ridge towards Jotunheimen](/ruter/bygdin-kanten-gravel)** — 35 km, gravel. The great classic. You follow the north side of the lake westward with Jotunheimen panorama the whole way. Demanding surface in places, but the view compensates for everything. Best in July–August when snow has cleared from higher sections.
**[Bygdin west side gravel road](/ruter/bygdin-vestside-gravel)** — 24 km, gravel. A calmer alternative to Kanten. You cycle westward from Bygdin Fjellhotell on gravel road through mountain terrain and open plateau. Well suited for those who want a gravel experience without the most technical section.
**[Bygdin–Vinstri west side](/ruter/bygdin-vinstri-halvtur)** — 20 km return, gravel. Southward towards Vinstri, along a gravel road through open mountain terrain. Relaxed pace, a good half-day trip. Turnaround at Vinstri — another mountain lake worth the stop.
### Road — asphalt above the tree line
**[Bygdin–Tyin road loop](/ruter/bygdin-tyin-landeveisrunde)** — 38 km, road. A loop via Fv51 and side roads. You pass Bygdin, cross towards Tyin and return. Moderate traffic, spectacular views, and you avoid cycling the same road back.
**[Vang–Bygdin Fv51 climb](/ruter/vang-bygdin-fv51-klatring)** — 18 km, road. Pure climbing: 590 hm from Vang (470 masl) to Bygdin (1060 masl). Consistent gradient, good asphalt, the feeling of cycling up into the mountains. One of Valdres' most satisfying climbs for training-oriented cyclists.
**[Beitostølen–Bygdin Fjellhotell](/ruter/beitostolen-bygdin-fjellhotell-landevei)** — 45 km, road. Long ride from [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen) northward on Fv51. Passes the Valdresflya start and continues to Bygdin. Can be combined with overnight accommodation for a two-day experience.
**[Valdresflya taster: Beitostølen–Bygdin return](/ruter/valdresflya-bygdin-tur-retur)** — 50 km, road. The full Valdresflya stretch from Beitostølen to Bygdin and back. Epic day trip for those with the fitness. Read more in [Valdresflya cycling guide](/guider/valdresflya-sykkelguide).
### MTB — trails and mountain terrain
**[Bygdin mountain biking](/ruter/bygdin-terrengsykling)** — 18 km, MTB. Trails and summer farm roads around the lake. Variable surface, technical sections, and the reward is the silence and views that only MTB gives access to.
**[Bygdin south side trails](/ruter/bygdin-sorside-stier-mtb)** — 19 km, MTB. The south side of the lake has trails not accessible by gravel or road bike. Technical, demanding in places, but unrivalled Jotunheimen panorama.
### Family — everyone can join
**[Bygdin–Eidsbugarden family road](/ruter/bygdin-eidsbugarden-familierunde)** — 14 km, family. The gravel road from Bygdin Fjellhotell westward to Eidsbugarden. Gentle profile, safe road without car traffic, and Eidsbugarden at the end with food and history. Perhaps Norway's finest family cycling trip above the tree line.

## Season and weather
Bygdin is 1060 masl. That means a short season and unpredictable weather.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Season start", value: "Mid-June (snow-dependent)" },
{ label: "Best period", value: "July–August" },
{ label: "Season end", value: "Mid-September" },
{ label: "Summer temperature", value: "8–18°C" },
{ label: "Precipitation", value: "Variable — check yr.no" },
{ label: "Wind", value: "Often westerly, can be strong along the lake" }
]} />
**The weather can change quickly.** Bygdin is exposed — it's mountain, not valley. A sunny morning can turn to rain and wind by lunch. Always pack:
- Windproof jacket (always, even in July)
- Extra layer (wool or fleece)
- Rain jacket if there's any uncertainty
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (UV radiation is stronger at 1060 masl)
**Check yr.no specifically for Bygdin** — don't rely on the forecast for Beitostølen or Fagernes. Mountain weather is different.
---
## Accommodation and food
**Bygdin Fjellhotell** is right by the lake, with a long history as a mountain hotel. Breakfast, dinner, and views you won't find at many hotels. Bookable online — recommended to reserve in July.
**Eidsbugarden** at the western end of Bygdin is one of Norway's most famous mountain lodges. Simple accommodation, good food, and a starting point for Jotunheimen hikes. Historic connection to Norwegian mountain sports.
**Self-catering:** There is no grocery shop at Bygdin. Stock up in Beitostølen or Fagernes before heading up. Bring enough food and drink for the whole trip — especially on longer routes.
---
## Combinations — connect Bygdin with the rest of Valdres
Bygdin is not an isolated destination. It is a hub in a larger network:
- **Bygdin + Valdresflya** — cycle [Beitostølen–Bygdin](/ruter/valdresflya-bygdin-tur-retur) and experience the full Valdresflya stretch. Can be done as a day trip or two days with overnight at Bygdin.
- **Bygdin + Eidsbugarden + boat** — cycle to Eidsbugarden, take the boat Bitihorn back across Bygdin. Classic combination. Check boat times in advance.
- **Bygdin + Filefjell** — from Bygdin south to Vang, then westward towards [Filefjell](/guider/filefjell-sykkelguide) and Kongevegen. Multi-day adventure.
- **Bygdin + Beitostølen Trail Arena** — base yourself at [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen), cycle up to Bygdin for a day, and use the Trail Arena for the rest of the time.

## M/B Bitihorn — cycle and take the boat back
Bygdin has something most cycling destinations lack: a boat service that makes one-way trips practical. The boat M/B Bitihorn operates on Bygdin between Bygdin Fjellhotell and Eidsbugarden in summer.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Route", value: "Bygdin Fjellhotell–Eidsbugarden" },
{ label: "Journey time", value: "Approx. 45 min" },
{ label: "Season", value: "Late June–mid-September" },
{ label: "Bikes on board", value: "Yes — space for bikes on deck" },
{ label: "Booking", value: "Recommended in July — popular route" },
{ label: "Price 2025", value: "Adult approx. 350 NOK one way (check for updates)" }
]} />
**Best combinations with the boat:**
- **Cycle west, boat back.** Start at Bygdin Fjellhotell, cycle the gravel road along the north side to Eidsbugarden (14 km), take the boat back. Perfect half-day trip — and you avoid cycling the same road back.
- **Boat out, cycle back.** Morning boat to Eidsbugarden, breakfast there, then cycle back along the north side. Advantage: you know exactly how far you have left the whole way.
- **Family version.** Cycle the flat family road to Eidsbugarden, give the kids waffles and hot chocolate, take the boat home. No complaints from the back seat.
- **MTB + boat.** Cycle the south side trails westward (demanding), take the boat back from Eidsbugarden. Saves your legs after technical terrain.
**Practical:** Departure times vary throughout the season — check jotunheimentravel.no for updated timetables. In high season (July) it may be worth booking a spot, especially at weekends.

## Photo stops and natural experiences along Bygdin
Bygdin is one of the most photogenic cycling areas in Valdres. 1060 masl, clear mountain air, Jotunheimen silhouettes and deep blue water provide subjects that work just as well from a phone as from a mirrorless camera.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "📷 Bygdin Fjellhotell bay", value: "Km 0 — morning mirror of water against Jotunheimen. Best light: 06–09 and 19–21." },
{ label: "📷 Kanten midway", value: "Km 8 — gravel road along steep edge with open view westward. Afternoon light gives golden mountains." },
{ label: "📷 Eidsbugarden", value: "Km 14 — historic mountain lodge with Hurrungane in the background. Iconic subject." },
{ label: "📷 Vinstri junction", value: "Km 10 southward — two mountain lakes meet in open terrain. 360° panorama." },
{ label: "📷 Fv51 over Valdresflya", value: "On the way up — Bygdin suddenly reveals itself after the last bend. Stop and take the shot." }
]} />
**Natural experiences you may encounter:**
- **Wild reindeer** — the Bygdin area borders wild reindeer habitat. Keep your distance (at least 300 metres) and use binoculars. Most common early morning and late evening.
- **Arctic fox** — rare, but observed in the area. You're lucky if you see one.
- **Mountain plants** — mountain avens, glacier crowfoot and Arctic poppy bloom in July. Growing along the gravel road without you needing to leave the track.
- **Silence** — the most underrated natural experience. At Bygdin in September it is so quiet you can hear the blood in your ears. Turn off the music.
---
## Tips from locals
- **Start early.** The Bygdin roads are best in the morning — less wind, better light, and you have the whole day ahead of you.
- **The boat Bitihorn** runs on Bygdin in summer. Perfect for cutting a leg short or simply experiencing the lake from the water. Timetables vary — check the website in advance.
- **Eidsbugarden is popular.** In July it can be fully booked. Reserve accommodation early if you're planning a two-day trip.
- **Tyres for gravel:** 40–45 mm with good tread. The surface around Bygdin varies from compact gravel to rocky mountain road — narrower than 38 mm is not recommended.
- **E-bike consideration:** The Bygdin routes are perfect for e-bikes — the altitude and gravel surface mean the battery is used faster than in the valley. Allow for 20–30% higher consumption than usual. Charging available at Bygdin Fjellhotell.

## Fishing and cycling — the Bygdin trout
Bygdin is one of Valdres' best fishing lakes. Large mountain trout, Arctic char and grayling — and you can combine your cycling trip with a couple of hours by the water's edge. For cyclists who like to vary their day, this is a unique opportunity you won't find at many other cycling destinations.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Fish species", value: "Trout, Arctic char, grayling" },
{ label: "Fishing permit", value: "Available via Inatur.no or locally" },
{ label: "Best fishing month", value: "July–August (surface)" },
{ label: "Bring", value: "Collapsible rod, fly or lure" },
{ label: "Good spots", value: "Inlets/outlets, shallow bays" },
{ label: "Bike + fishing", value: "Cycle to the bay, fish 2 hours, cycle on" }
]} />
**How to do it practically:**
Collapsible fishing rods weigh under 400 grams and fit in a frame bag or on a rear rack. You don't need much — one rod, a small selection of lures or flies, and a fishing permit. Buy the permit digitally on Inatur.no before you go, so you don't have to hunt for a sales point on the mountain.
**Best stops for fishing along the cycling routes:**
- **The Eidsbugarden end** — the family road ends here, and the outlet river has good fishing. Combine with waffles inside.
- **Bygdin bays on the north side** — along the gravel road (Kanten route) there are several shallow bays where trout hunt insects in the evening.
- **Vinstri** — southward on [Bygdin–Vinstri half trip](/ruter/bygdin-vinstri-halvtur). A calmer lake with less pressure, good chances of Arctic char.
**The rules:** Follow local fishing regulations, take all your rubbish with you, and release fish you don't plan to eat. Bygdin is a fragile high-mountain lake — respect it.

## Two-day plan — cycling and boat at Bygdin
With two days you can take in most of Bygdin without rushing. Here is a concrete plan that combines gravel, family-friendly riding and M/B Bitihorn.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Day 1 — morning", value: "Arrive Bygdin Fjellhotell. Cycle the Kanten route westward along the north side (35 km gravel, demanding). Lunch at Eidsbugarden." },
{ label: "Day 1 — afternoon", value: "Take M/B Bitihorn back (45 min). Rest, explore the area around the hotel. Dinner at Bygdin Fjellhotell." },
{ label: "Day 2 — morning", value: "Bygdin–Vinstri half trip southward (20 km gravel, easy). Relaxed pace, photo stops, optional fishing at Vinstri." },
{ label: "Day 2 — afternoon", value: "Back to Bygdin Fjellhotell. Cycle down Fv51 to Beitostølen (30 km, asphalt, mostly downhill) — or drive home." },
{ label: "Total", value: "~85 km, ~1200 hm over 2 days. Gravel + road." },
{ label: "Alternative day 2", value: "Family version: Bygdin–Eidsbugarden family road (14 km flat gravel), ice cream at Eidsbugarden, boat back. Total 49 km + boat." }
]} />
**Accommodation:** Bygdin Fjellhotell is the obvious choice — you park and cycle straight from the door. Alternative: bring a tent and camp by the lake (check local rules for camping, freedom to roam applies above the tree line). Book the hotel early in July.
**Packing list additions for 2 days:**
- Extra wool base layer and socks
- Charging equipment for e-bike (Bygdin Fjellhotell has charging facilities)
- Evening light — it stays light late in July, but sunglasses and a headlamp for a possible early morning start
- Swimwear — Bygdin is cold (10–14°C in summer), but a quick dip after a cycling trip is undeniably refreshing
---
## Summary
Bygdin is Valdres' high-mountain gem for cyclists. Not because it's the easiest to get to, but because the experience is unique: gravel roads along a mountain lake with Jotunheimen as a backdrop, family rides to historic mountain lodges, and road climbs that give you the feeling of cycling over the roof of Valdres. Ten routes, four bike types, one spectacular lake.
