# Aurdal cycling guide — quiet valley, great gravel roads
Aurdal lies 20 km north of Fagernes in Nord-Aurdal municipality, where Begnaelva flows gently through a wide valley with farms, pastures and an old stave church. The village is a hub for [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) and a starting point for three very different cycling routes — from flat family cycling along the river to gravel at 1000 metres elevation with views towards Jotunheimen.
<AnswerBox question="Why cycle in Aurdal?" answer="Aurdal has three cycling routes for different levels: a flat family loop along Begnaelva (12 km), Tansbergrunden on mountain pasture roads with views towards Jotunheimen (35 km gravel), and Aurdal Skogsstier for beginner MTB (16 km). The village is a Mjølkevegen hub with a grocery store, accommodation and a short distance to Fagernes. Season May–October." />

## Aurdal as a cycling base
Aurdal is not the first place people think of when planning a cycling trip in Valdres. That's an advantage. While [Beitostølen](/guider/beitostolen-sykkelguide) and [Vaset](/guider/vaset-sykkelguide) draw people up to the mountains, Aurdal sits quiet and green in the valley — with a surprising amount to offer cyclists who value tranquility.
**What makes Aurdal interesting:**
- Mjølkevegen passes right through — a natural stop on day 1 or 2
- Three cycling routes covering family, gravel and MTB
- Aurdal stave church from the Middle Ages — history in the middle of the route
- Begnaelva with swimming spots on warm days
- 20 minutes from [Fagernes](/guider/fagernes-sykkelguide) by car or bus
- Grocery store, café and accommodation — everything you need without city noise
Aurdal suits cyclists who use it as a base for 2–3 days, combining valley routes with a day on [Tansbergrunden](/ruter/tansbergrunden), and perhaps taking [Valdresbanen Sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) south to Fagernes one afternoon.

## Route overview — 3 routes from Aurdal
### Family cycling
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Aurdal Family Loop", value: "12 km" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "45 hm" },
{ label: "Time", value: "1–1.5 h" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "Asphalt + gravel" }
]} />
[Aurdal Familierunde](/ruter/aurdal-familierunde) is a short loop on quiet country roads along Begnaelva. Almost no climbing, safe for children from age 5–6. Stop at Aurdal stave church for a bit of history, and bring a swimsuit — the river has several lovely swimming spots on warm summer days.
The route starts and ends in Aurdal village centre. Perfect as a morning ride before breakfast, or as a relaxed afternoon activity.
**E-bike:** Completely unnecessary on this route — but nice for those who want to extend to [Valdresbanen Sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) afterwards.
### Gravel — Tansbergrunden
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Tansbergrunden", value: "35 km" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "350 hm" },
{ label: "Time", value: "3–4 h" },
{ label: "Elevation", value: "850–1000 masl" }
]} />
[Tansbergrunden](/ruter/tansbergrunden) is Valdres' best-kept cycling secret. The route follows mountain pasture roads from 850 to 1000 metres elevation, with views towards Jotunheimen to the north. A gentle profile despite the altitude — the climbing is steady and manageable.
What makes Tansbergrunden special is the solitude. You rarely encounter other cyclists here, and the pasture roads are in good condition. Bring enough water and food — there are no refreshment stops along the route.
**Tip:** Combine with an overnight stay in Aurdal and ride [Aurdal Skogsstier](/ruter/aurdal-skogsstier-mtb) the next day for two completely different experiences.
**E-bike:** Excellent fit. The climbing is steady and you get more time to enjoy the views.
### MTB — Aurdal Skogsstier
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Aurdal Skogsstier", value: "16 km" },
{ label: "Elevation gain", value: "280 hm" },
{ label: "Time", value: "1.5–3 h" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "Forest road + trail" }
]} />
[Aurdal Skogsstier](/ruter/aurdal-skogsstier-mtb) is perfect for MTB beginners. Wide forest roads and simple natural trails through pine forest and birch slopes. No technical sections requiring experience — this is about getting out into the forest on two wheels.
Long season from May to October. The trails are best in dry weather — after rain roots can become slippery, ideally wait 1–2 days.
**E-bike:** Go for it. The climbing is moderate and you get a comfortable ride regardless of fitness.

## Mjølkevegen through Aurdal
Aurdal is a natural stopping point for cyclists on [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen). The stage from [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes) to Aurdal is a calm introduction — 20 km along the valley with little climbing. Continuing north towards [Stølsvidda](/omrade/stolsvidda), the famous mountain pasture stretch begins with wide-open landscapes and summer farms along the way.

## Weekend plan — 2 days in Aurdal
Aurdal deserves more than a passing stop. With two days you get three different cycling experiences and time to feel the calm of the valley.

**Day 1** is about settling in. Morning ride along Begnaelva with a stop at Aurdal stave church — take photos, stretch your legs. After lunch: follow [Valdresbanen Sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) south to [Fagernes](/guider/fagernes-sykkelguide). Flat asphalt, light traffic, an old railway corridor. Dinner in Fagernes, bus or cycle back.
**Day 2** is gravel day. [Tansbergrunden](/ruter/tansbergrunden) starts gently but climbs you up to 1000 metres elevation on pasture roads where you can see the Jotunheimen peaks to the north. Pack food and enough water — no services along the way. Start early, so you have the afternoon free.
**Tip:** Have an e-bike? Extend day 2 with a detour to [Skrautvål](/ruter/skrautval-nyvoll-kulturlandskap-nord-aurdal) on the way back — cultural landscape with views over the valley.

## Stave churches and cultural heritage — cycling history in Aurdal
Valdres has Norway's highest concentration of stave churches, and from Aurdal you can reach three of them by bike. Combining the stave churches with the regular cycling routes gives you a cultural tour unique to the region.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Aurdal stave church", value: "0 km from centre", sub: "Medieval church along the Family Loop" },
{ label: "Lomen stave church", value: "18 km northeast", sub: "Via Slidre-dalen · flat road cycling" },
{ label: "Hedalen stave church", value: "25 km south", sub: "Sør-Aurdal · requires some climbing" },
{ label: "Recommended time", value: "1 full day", sub: "60 km round trip · 3 stave churches" }
]} columns={2} />
**Aurdal stave church** sits right on the [Family Loop](/ruter/aurdal-familierunde) and is a natural stop — an old stone church with a churchyard and views over the valley. Free access year-round.
**Lomen stave church** is reached via [Slidre–Lomen Kulturvei](/ruter/slidre-lomen-kulturvei) — 18 km of easy road cycling through [Slidre-dalen](/omrade/slidre-dalen). A stave church from the 1100s with a preserved medieval portal. Open for visits during the summer season.
**Stave church loop in one day:** Aurdal → Lomen (18 km) → back via the east side → Aurdal. Around 40 km, 200 hm, and you visit two churches on one ride. Have more energy? Continue south towards Hedalen stave church in [Sør-Aurdal](/omrade/sor-aurdal) — but then you're looking at 60+ km total and a bit more climbing.
**E-bike:** Perfect for the stave church loop. Eliminates the climbing, and you get more time at the churches.
Want more action and more routes? [Beitostølen](/guider/beitostolen-sykkelguide) has 13 routes and Trail Arena. Want world-class gravel? [Vaset](/guider/vaset-sykkelguide) has Panoramavegen and 10 routes. Aurdal is for those who appreciate that not everything needs to be grand.

## Spring's first pedal strokes — Aurdal opens earliest in Valdres
The valley around Aurdal is among the first places in Valdres where the snow disappears. While [Beitostølen](/guider/beitostolen-sykkelguide) and [Stølsvidda](/guider/stolsvidda-sykkelguide) lie under snow well into May, you can often cycle in Aurdal as early as late April.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "April (last week)", value: "Valley floor clear", sub: "Family loop + Valdresbanen · dry days, 5–10 °C" },
{ label: "May (first half)", value: "Forest trails open", sub: "MTB in the lowlands · wet soil after snowmelt — wait for it to dry" },
{ label: "May (second half)", value: "Gravel season start", sub: "Tonsåsen + lower pasture roads · check surface first" },
{ label: "June", value: "Everything open", sub: "Tansbergrunden + mountain routes · full season from mid-June" }
]} columns={2} />
**Practical tips for spring cycling in Aurdal:**
- **Start along the river.** [Aurdal Familierunde](/ruter/aurdal-familierunde) and [Begna Elvesti](/ruter/aurdal-begna-elvesti) are the first to dry out — flat ground, well drained.
- **Mud and slop.** Forest trails in May means mud. Wide tyres and mudguards. Gravel roads up towards Tonsåsen can have a soft surface the first weeks after snowmelt.
- **Layers and wind.** Mornings are cold in April–May (2–5 °C), but the sun warms quickly in the valley. A wind jacket you can pack into your pocket.
- **Birdsong.** Early May along Begnaelva is special — dippers, wagtails and common sandpipers. A quiet morning ride with a natural soundtrack included.
- **Check with Fagernes first.** Call Intersport Fagernes or check yr.no for local conditions — they know which roads are open.
Aurdal in spring is not spectacular in the way mountain routes are in summer. It is quiet, green, and you have the roads to yourself. For some, that is exactly what is needed after a long winter.

## Bikepacking from Aurdal — north towards the mountains
Aurdal is a natural launchpad for bikepackers who want to build gradually towards mountain terrain. From the valley floor at Begnaelva you can climb northward in stages — first through forest and summer farms, then up onto the pasture roads, and finally out onto the open high plateau.
<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Day 1: Aurdal → Stølsvidda", value: "48 km · 680 hm", sub: "Via pasture roads north · overnight tent/DNT hut" },
{ label: "Day 2: Stølsvidda → Beitostølen", value: "25 km · 200 hm", sub: "High mountain gravel · down to Beitostølen for resupply" },
{ label: "Day 3: Beitostølen → Bygdin", value: "35 km · 550 hm", sub: "Fv51 uphill · Jotunheimen edge · overnight mountain hotel/tent" },
{ label: "Alternative: Mjølkevegen", value: "250 km total", sub: "Join Mjølkevegen from Aurdal · 4–6 days for the full route" },
{ label: "Surface", value: "50% gravel / 50% asphalt", sub: "40 mm tyres minimum · tubeless recommended" },
{ label: "Water and food", value: "Plan carefully", sub: "Long stretches without shops · carry 2 L water above the treeline" }
]} columns={3} />
**The route [Aurdal–Beitostølen Stølsvei](/ruter/aurdal-beitostolen-stolsvei-bikepacking)** (48 km, 680 hm) is already in the route database and gives you a solid first stage. The pasture roads are rideable from mid-June, but the surface varies — some sections are hard-packed gravel, others are grass-covered wheel tracks.
**What you need from Aurdal:**
- **Provisions:** The Coop in Aurdal village centre has most things. Stock up — the next shop is Beitostølen.
- **Water:** Streams along the pasture roads are drinkable above the treeline. Below the treeline: bring a filter or enough bottles.
- **Tent:** Wild camping is permitted on uncultivated land, but respect the 150-metre rule from the nearest house. Stølsvidda has several great campsites with views.
- **Contingency plan:** Mobile coverage is patchy on the pasture roads. Download offline maps. Komoot or Mapy.cz work well offline.
**Connect to Mjølkevegen:** Aurdal lies along [Mjølkevegen](/guider/mjolkevegen-alt-du-trenger-a-vite), and you can follow the full route northward. See the [bikepacking guide](/guider/bikepacking-valdres) for a detailed gear list and logistics.
