# 3 days cycling in Valdres — day-by-day itinerary

Three days is enough to experience the best Valdres has to offer from the saddle. This plan uses Beitostølen as a base and combines gravel, road cycling and mountain experiences — without having to change accommodation along the way.

<AnswerBox question="How do you plan 3 days cycling in Valdres?" answer="Use Beitostølen as your base. Day 1: warm-up ride on gravel (35 km). Day 2: big day over Valdresflya or along Syndin (42–72 km). Day 3: local exploration and Trail Arena (16–33 km). Total 90–140 km spread over three days, adapted to your level." />

---

## Who is this for?

This plan is designed for cyclists with moderate fitness who ride regularly. You should be comfortable with 30–70 km per day and some climbing. The plan includes alternatives for every level — from a relaxed holiday to an ambitious training camp.

**Bike type:** Gravel or road bike works for most of it. Day 3 has an MTB option for those who want to try the trails.

---

## Before you leave — practicalities

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Travel from Oslo", value: "3.5 hours", sub: "Car via Rv4 and Rv33, or Vy bus" },
  { label: "Season", value: "June–September", sub: "Valdresflya normally opens in May" },
  { label: "Total distance", value: "90–140 km", sub: "Depends on chosen routes" },
  { label: "Base", value: "Beitostølen", sub: "900 m above sea level, everything within walking distance" }
]} columns={2} />

**Getting there:** Vy bus from Oslo to Fagernes takes approx. 3 hours. From Fagernes to Beitostølen is 25 km — local bus or taxi. By car you can park for free at your accommodation.

**Accommodation:** Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen and Beitostølen Resort have bike storage. Several cabins and apartments can be rented in the area.

**Bike rental:** Available at Beitostølen for those who don't bring their own. Gravel, road and MTB options.

---

## Day 1 — Arrival and warm-up

**Goal:** Loosen up your legs after the journey. Get familiar with the area.

### Recommended route: Beitostølen Gravel Loop

The [Beitostølen Gravel Loop](/ruter/beitostolen-gravel-loop) takes you through the mountain farm landscape south and west of the village centre. The gravel roads are wide and well-maintained, with little traffic.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Distance", value: "35 km" },
  { label: "Elevation gain", value: "520 hm" },
  { label: "Type", value: "Gravel" },
  { label: "Time", value: "2–3 hours" }
]} columns={4} />

The route gives you an overview of the terrain and a feel for what Beitostølen is all about: mountain farm tracks, alpine lakes and views towards Jotunheimen.

### Easier alternative

Prefer a shorter ride after the journey? The [Beitostølen–Yddin loop](/ruter/beitostolen-yddin-rundtur) is 16 km on flat, family-friendly gravel road — perfect for rolling out the stiffness.

**Evening:** Explore Beitostølen village centre on foot. Check your bike and gear for tomorrow's big ride. Check the weather on yr.no — day 2 should have the best conditions.

---

## Day 2 — The big ride

This is the main day. Choose between two classics based on your ambition level.

### Option A: Over Valdresflya (ambitious)

[Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya) is Norway's highest mountain pass on a public road — 1389 m above sea level. The route from Beitostølen and back is a full-day ride that requires good fitness and proper planning.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Distance", value: "72 km" },
  { label: "Highest point", value: "1389 masl" },
  { label: "Type", value: "Road" },
  { label: "Difficulty", value: "Challenging" }
]} columns={4} />

**Tip:** Start early (08:00–09:00). Bring a windproof jacket and extra food — it can be cold and windy at the top even in July. There are no water refill points after Beitostølen, so bring enough.

### Option B: Syndin Rundt (moderate)

[Syndin Rundt](/ruter/syndin-rundt) is a more relaxed full-day ride along Lake Syndin on gravel roads. Less demanding than Valdresflya, but equally rich in nature.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Distance", value: "42 km" },
  { label: "Elevation gain", value: "650 hm" },
  { label: "Type", value: "Gravel" },
  { label: "Difficulty", value: "Moderate" }
]} columns={4} />

The route offers quiet mountain roads, fishing lakes and the kind of silence you rarely find from the main road.

**After the ride:** Stretch properly. Eat well. Day 3 will be easier.

---

## Day 3 — Local exploration and departure

**Goal:** One last good session before heading home. Shorter distance, more experience.

### For MTB riders: Trail Arena

[Beitostølen Trail Arena](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena) has over 100 km of marked trails. A morning session of 2–3 hours gives you a taste of the green and blue trails — wide, controlled and with great views.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Distance", value: "20 km" },
  { label: "Type", value: "MTB" },
  { label: "Difficulty", value: "Moderate" },
  { label: "Time", value: "2–3 hours" }
]} columns={4} />

Rent an MTB on site if you didn't bring your own.

### For gravel/road: Øyangrunden

[Øyangrunden](/ruter/oyangrunden) is one last half-day on gravel roads — 32.5 km and 420 hm. Accessible for most riders, and you'll be back by lunch.

### Minimalist option

Short on time? Ride the [Beitostølen–Yddin loop](/ruter/beitostolen-yddin-rundtur) (16 km, flat) as a morning ride before departure.

---

## Packing list for 3 days

**On the bike:**
- Windproof jacket (essential in the mountains, even if it's sunny at the start)
- Merino wool base layer (temperature swings, especially on Valdresflya)
- Spare inner tube and multi-tool
- Sun cream and sunglasses
- Map app with offline maps (Strava, Komoot or UT.no)

**In the car/at the room:**
- Extra clothes for after riding
- Spanner for the bike
- Charger for GPS/cycle computer

---

## Food experiences along the way — stop and eat local

Valdres is one of Norway's finest food regions, and you'll be riding right through the heart of it. Skip the energy bars — here you eat properly.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Day 1: Mountain farm visit", value: "The gravel loop passes active summer farms", sub: "Freshly made waffles, farm butter and brunost straight from the producer. Ask if you can try the local gamalost." },
  { label: "Day 2: Packed lunch from Coop", value: "No shops on Valdresflya", sub: "Make sandwiches the evening before. Bring nuts, dried fruit and chocolate. Fill your water bottles — there's 40 km with no refills." },
  { label: "Day 2: Reward", value: "Dinner in Beitostølen after the big ride", sub: "You've burned 3000+ kcal — eat properly. Several restaurants in the village centre within walking distance." },
  { label: "Day 3: Breakfast ritual", value: "Last morning, take your time", sub: "Good breakfast at your accommodation before the final ride. Coffee and baked goods — no need to rush on day 3." },
  { label: "Mountain farm food to look for", value: "Local specialities", sub: "Rjomegraut, rakfisk (autumn), gamalost, tjukkmjølk, flatbrød, cured meats and trollkrem with lingonberries." },
  { label: "Drinking water", value: "Streams above the tree line", sub: "Mountain streams above 1000 m are normally safe drinking water in Valdres. Below the tree line: use water you bring." }
]} columns={2} />

**Practical tip:** Coop Beitostølen has everything you need for packed lunches. Buy the evening before day 2 — you don't want to waste time on a shop stop when Valdresflya is waiting. If you ride the Syndin option (day 2), you'll pass mountain lodges where you can buy hot food along the way.

## Family version — 3 days with children in Valdres

The kids don't have to sit in the back seat. With a few adjustments, the Beitostølen base works just as well for families — shorter stages, more breaks, more experience per kilometre.

<StatGrid stats={[
  { label: "Day 1: Village loop", value: "6 km, flat, tarmac/gravel", sub: "The Beitostølen village loop is perfect for finding your rhythm. Pumptrack for the kids afterwards — they love it." },
  { label: "Day 2: Yddin loop", value: "16 km, flat gravel road", sub: "The Beitostølen–Yddin loop is child-friendly all the way. Stop for a swim in Yddin if the weather allows — shallow, calm water." },
  { label: "Day 3: Forest trail loop", value: "10 km, easy gravel", sub: "Beitostølen forest trail family loop through birch woodland. Short enough to pack up and drive home afterwards." },
  { label: "Ages 4–7", value: "Bike trailer or tag-along", sub: "The youngest ride along — you do the pedalling. Flat gravel roads around Beitostølen are ideal." },
  { label: "Ages 8–12", value: "Own bike, short distance", sub: "10–16 km per day is enough. Let them set the pace. Stop at every stream." },
  { label: "Ages 13+", value: "Trail Arena green trails", sub: "Teenagers love the trails. Green routes at Trail Arena are wide and safe — but exciting enough that they forget their phones." }
]} columns={2} />

**Family tip:** Beitostølen has a [pumptrack](/guider/pumptrack-leira-nybegynner-mtb-valdres) that works as a reward after each day's stage. Bring sweets — it's the best motivation for children on a bike, regardless of age. And let them choose at least one stop per day — they ride further when they feel ownership of the plan.

**Rental equipment for children:** [Bike rental in Valdres](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres) includes children's bikes, trailers and tag-alongs. Book in advance — children's bikes are the first to go in July.

## Adjustments

### Want it easier?

Skip Valdresflya (day 2) and choose Syndin Rundt or [Øyangrunden](/ruter/oyangrunden) instead. Use day 3 for a hike or rest day. 3 days doesn't have to mean 3 cycling days.

### Want it harder?

Swap day 1 for [Slettefjellrunden](/ruter/slettefjellrunden) (65 km road). Ride Valdresflya on day 2. Finish with Trail Arena expert trails on day 3 — [Beitostølen Trail Arena expert trails](/ruter/beitostolen-trail-arena-ekspert) is 22 km of red and black trails.

### With an e-bike?

All routes in this plan work with an e-bike. Make sure the battery is fully charged the evening before day 2 — Valdresflya demands a lot of range. [Read our e-bike guide for Valdres](/guider/elsykkel-valdres-guide) for charging tips and range calculations.
