<AnswerBox question="Should I cycle in Valdres or Geilo?" answer="Geilo is best for Rallarvegen and lift-assisted trail riding in the bike park. Valdres is strongest on gravel variety, mountain pass road cycling and all-round riding — with Mjølkevegen (250 km), Valdresflya (1389 m above sea level) and over 270 marked routes across 13 areas. For multi-day gravel tours Valdres offers more breadth; for Rallarvegen specifically, Geilo is the natural base." />
## Two mountain destinations — different profiles
Geilo and Valdres are both located in the Norwegian mountains, roughly 3–3.5 hours from Oslo. Geilo is a compact mountain village with Rallarvegen as its main draw and a growing bike park. Valdres is an entire valley region stretching from Dokka to Jotunheimen, with 13 areas and a network of routes covering everything from family loop rides to mountain passes above 1300 m.
Both are excellent cycling destinations. The choice comes down to what you prioritise.
## Gravel and long-distance
**Valdres:** Home ground of [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) — 250 km of continuous gravel road through mountain-farm landscapes with organised luggage transport and accommodation. Over 110 gravel routes spread across the entire valley, from short summer-farm rides to [demanding high-mountain routes](/guider/hardeste-sykkelutfordringer-valdres). The [mountain-farm roads](/guider/stolsveier-gravel-valdres) give Valdres a character no other region can match.
**Geilo:** Rallarvegen is Geilo's signature gravel experience — 82 km from Haugastøl to Flåm along the historic construction road for the Bergen Railway. A spectacular route with tunnels, waterfalls and steep descents towards Flåm. Beyond Rallarvegen, Geilo has limited gravel routes — some forest roads in Hallingdal, but no continuous network.
**Winner:** Rallarvegen specifically: Geilo. Gravel in breadth and variety: Valdres. Both Mjølkevegen and Rallarvegen are iconic — but Valdres has 110+ gravel routes, while Geilo effectively has one major one.
## MTB and trail riding
**Geilo:** Vestlia has a growing trail cycling facility with flow trails, downhill runs and guided tours. Courses for beginners and children. Hallingskarvet national park offers opportunities for longer MTB rides in mountain terrain. The facility is compact and easy to reach from the village centre.
**Valdres:** [Beitostølen Trail Arena](/guider/terrengsykling-mtb-beitostolen) with marked trails in varied terrain. [Bitihorn](/guider/bitihorn-mtb-komplett-guide) at 1607 m is technically demanding mountain biking with panoramic views. Nearly 50 MTB routes spread across 13 areas — from gentler forest trails to alpine terrain.
**Winner:** Geilo for a compact bike-park experience. Valdres for a broader MTB network and nature experiences on longer routes.
## Road cycling
**Valdres:** [Valdresflya](/ruter/valdresflya) along Rv51 is one of Norway's finest mountain climbs — 22 km up to 1389 m with Jotunheimen as the backdrop. [Panoramavegen](/guider/panoramavegen-sykkelguide) offers views from 1100 m altitude. Over 55 road routes from quiet valley roads to [mountain crossings](/guider/fjellovergangene-valdres-sykkel).
**Geilo:** E134 and Rv7 offer some road cycling options, but Geilo is primarily a winter and outdoor destination. Hallingdal has rolling terrain suited to road cycling, but lacks the iconic mountain passes Valdres has. Cyclists wanting big climbs tend to head towards Hardangervidda from the Geilo side instead.
**Winner:** Valdres. Mountain passes, variety and dedicated road routes make Valdres the stronger road cycling choice.
## Family cycling
**Valdres:** Over 50 family routes along quiet gravel roads and summer-farm tracks. [Valdresbanen cycle path](/guider/valdresbanen-sykkelvei-guide) is flat and safe. [Family version of Mjølkevegen](/guider/mjolkevegen-barn-familieversjon) with short daily stages. A broad selection of routes suited to different age groups.
**Geilo:** Rallarvegen is popular for families with older children — but note that the Finse–Myrdal section has steep stretches and narrow trails. Vestlia has child-friendly trails in the bike park. Compact distances make it easy to keep track of children.
**Winner:** Valdres for breadth of family routes. Geilo for a specific family experience along Rallarvegen (with children 10+).

## Season and accessibility
Both destinations are snow-free from June to September. Rallarvegen normally opens in late June — depending on snowmelt above Finse. Valdresflya (Rv51) typically opens in mid-May. Low-lying routes in Valdres are rideable from April.
Geilo has a compact centre with services gathered in one place. Valdres requires a little more planning — the routes are spread across an entire valley, but that also means more choices.
## Combine both?
For a longer cycling holiday you can combine Valdres and Geilo. Drive to Gol — the gateway to Hallingdal — and cycle the [Bergen Railway route](/guider/bergensbanen-gol-inngangsport-valdres-sykkel) to Geilo. Alternatively: start with Mjølkevegen in Valdres, drive to Geilo for Rallarvegen, and cover two iconic routes in one trip.
Gol is just 1.5 hours from Fagernes — a convenient link between the two regions.
## Transport and getting there
**To Valdres:** Vy bus from Oslo Bus Terminal to Fagernes takes around 3 hours, with connections onwards to Beitostølen (3.5 hours total). You can bring your bike in the luggage compartment — book a space in advance. By car, E16 via Hønefoss is the fastest route. Fagernes is the natural entry point with good parking and services.
**To Geilo:** The Bergen Railway stops at Geilo — 3.5 hours from Oslo S. The train is especially convenient for Rallarvegen cyclists, as you can continue by train to Finse and cycle down to Flåm. By car, Rv7 across Hardangervidda takes around 3.5 hours from Oslo.
**Train advantage:** Geilo wins on rail connections — the Bergen Railway is faster and more comfortable than the bus to Valdres. But Valdres compensates by meaning you never need a car once you arrive: Beitostølen has everything within walking distance.
## Accommodation for cyclists
**Valdres:** Radisson Blu Resort Beitostølen and Beitostølen Resort are the main bases, with a bike workshop and secure cycle parking. Along [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen), mountain lodges are spaced a day's ride apart — perfect for bikepacking without a tent. Scandic Valdres works as an alternative base for the valley routes. Campsites are spread throughout Valdres.
**Geilo:** Vestlia Resort and Dr. Holms Hotel are Geilo's best-known accommodation options. The compact centre means you're quickly out on routes regardless of your hotel choice. For Rallarvegen, staying at Finse 1222 — Norway's highest-situated hotel — is recommended before your cycling day down to Flåm.
## Who should choose what?
- **Rallarvegen is your dream ride:** Geilo
- **You want gravel breadth and bikepacking:** Valdres
- **Bike park with lift-assisted riding:** Geilo
- **Natural-trail MTB and longer off-road routes:** Valdres
- **Road cycling with mountain climbs:** Valdres
- **Compact mountain destination with everything in one place:** Geilo
- **Multi-day cycling holiday with variety:** Valdres
- **Family routes for young children:** Valdres
- **Rallarvegen with teenagers:** Geilo
- **Easy train connection from Oslo:** Geilo
- **Everything from the door without a car:** Valdres (Beitostølen)
## Digital planning — GPX routes and apps
Access to ready-planned routes makes a big difference to the cycling experience, especially in unfamiliar terrain.
**Valdres:** Sykkelvaldres.no has GPX files for over 500 routes, sorted by type, difficulty and area. Mjølkevegen has dedicated stage maps with accommodation points. Komoot has a growing user library of Valdres routes — search "gravel Valdres" to find local favourites. Strava segments cover most of the mountain passes, including Valdresflya and Panoramavegen.
**Geilo:** Rallarvegen has solid GPX data available from Geilo Tourist Association and Komoot. Most people download a single GPX file for the full Haugastøl–Flåm stretch. Beyond Rallarvegen, ready-planned routes are thinner on the ground — you'll need to plan more independently using maps.
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "GPX routes available", valdres: "500+", geilo: "~20 + Rallarvegen" },
{ label: "Best planning app", valdres: "Komoot / Strava", geilo: "Komoot / UT.no" },
{ label: "Offline maps", valdres: "Norgeskart in Komoot", geilo: "Norgeskart in Komoot" },
{ label: "Mobile coverage on route", valdres: "Good in valley, variable in mountains", geilo: "Weak Finse–Myrdal" }
]} />
**Tip:** Always download maps offline before you go — especially on Rallarvegen between Finse and Myrdal, where mobile coverage is weak. In Valdres, coverage is good in the valleys but can be unreliable on Stølsvidda and over Valdresflya.
## One week, two regions — how to combine them
For cyclists with a week's holiday, the ultimate plan is to take in both regions. Here is a concrete suggestion:
<StatGrid items={[
{ label: "Day 1–2", program: "Mjølkevegen stage 1–2: Vinstra → Beitostølen (gravel, luggage transport)" },
{ label: "Day 3", program: "Beitostølen: MTB in Trail Arena or day trip Valdresflya (road cycling)" },
{ label: "Day 4", program: "Drive Beitostølen → Gol → Haugastøl (1.5 + 1 hour)" },
{ label: "Day 5", program: "Rallarvegen: Haugastøl → Finse → Flåm (82 km, spectacular gravel)" },
{ label: "Day 6", program: "Flåmsbana back to Myrdal, train to Geilo, rest day" },
{ label: "Day 7", program: "Vestlia bike park or Hallingdal loop, travel home" }
]} />
This plan gives you Mjølkevegen's summer-farm landscapes, Valdresflya's mountain climb, Rallarvegen's iconic stretch and Vestlia's bike park — all in one trip. Gol serves as the natural hub between the two regions.
**Logistics:** Book luggage transport on Mjølkevegen via sykkelvaldres.no or local providers. For Rallarvegen: leave your car at Haugastøl and take Flåmsbana + the Bergen Railway back — no need to cycle both ways.
