# Getting to Valdres with your bike

Valdres is easy to reach from Oslo — by train, bus or car. Here is everything you need to know about getting there and back with your bike.

<AnswerBox question="How do you get to Valdres with a bike from Oslo?" answer="Valdresekspressen (bus) runs from Oslo Bus Terminal to Fagernes — approx. 2.5 hours. Bikes are carried as luggage (free/small surcharge). Train to Gol (2 hours), then bus to Golsfjellet/Mjølkevegen start. By car: E16 from Oslo to Fagernes is 2 hours." />

---

## Valdresekspressen — the easiest option

**Valdresekspressen** is the bus route connecting Oslo with Valdres. Operated by Vy/Valdres Bilruter.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Oslo → Fagernes", value: "Approx. 2.5 hours", sub: "From Oslo Bus Terminal. Daily departures." },
{ label: "Bike on board", value: "Yes — luggage compartment", sub: "Free or small surcharge. Check with current operator." },
{ label: "Stops at", value: "Leira, Aurdal and more", sub: "Many Valdres stops along the route." },
  { label: "Price", value: "Approx. 200–350 kr", sub: "Depends on operator and booking time." }
]} columns={2} />

**Booking:** vy.no or valdresbilruter.no. Book a bike space in the luggage compartment in advance during peak season (July).

**Pro tip:** Board at Leira (not [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes)) if you're cycling [Valdresbanen sykkelvei](/ruter/valdresbanen-sykkelvei) — you'll already be on the right side.

---

## Train to Gol — for the Mjølkevegen start

For those heading to cycle **[Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) eastwards** (Gol → Vinstra):

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Oslo S → Gol", value: "Approx. 2 hours", sub: "NSB/Vy, Bergen Line. Daily departures." },
{ label: "Bike on the train", value: "Yes — bike reservation", sub: "Book bike space via vy.no. Limited availability." },
{ label: "From Gol → Golsfjellet", value: "20 km by bike/taxi", sub: "Or take the bus to Golsfjellet." },
  { label: "Bike surcharge", value: "100–200 kr extra", sub: "Varies. Always book in advance." }
]} columns={2} />

**Alternative:** Take the train to **Vinstra** and cycle [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen) westwards (Vinstra → Gol). See the [complete Mjølkevegen stage plan](/guider/mjolkevegen-etappeplan) for a day-by-day itinerary. The Vinstra train takes the same time from Oslo.

---

## Car — fastest and most flexible

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Oslo → Fagernes", value: "Approx. 2 hours", sub: "E16 via Hønefoss. Straightforward." },
  { label: "Oslo → Beitostølen", value: "Approx. 2.5 hours", sub: "E16 + Rv51 via Fagernes." },
{ label: "Oslo → Golsfjellet", value: "Approx. 2 hours", sub: "E16 via Gol — closest Mjølkevegen entry point." },
  { label: "Parking Fagernes", value: "Free in the centre", sub: "Good availability, several car parks." }
]} columns={2} />

**Bike rack:** Recommended over packing in the boot for multiple bikes. Note: cycling is prohibited in tunnels (Filefjell tunnel) — car is the only option.

---

## One-way trip — from Oslo to Valdres and bus back

The most common setup for [Mjølkevegen](/ruter/mjolkevegen):
1. **Out on Valdresekspressen** to [Fagernes](/omrade/fagernes)
2. **Cycle** Fagernes → Golsfjellet (250 km over 4–5 days) — see the [stage plan](/guider/mjolkevegen-etappeplan)
3. **Bus Gol → Oslo** with Nettbuss/Vy

Alternatively in reverse: train to Gol → cycle east → bus home from Fagernes.

**Luggage transport:** lokal operatør coordinates luggage transfers between accommodation along Mjølkevegen. You ride light — your bags wait at the next mountain lodge. See the [guide to bike rental and luggage services](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres) for more information.

---

## Getting around within Valdres

**Within Valdres:**
- **Local buses** have limited capacity for bikes — check individual routes
- **Taxi with trailer**: Local taxi companies take bikes — book via [Valdres Bilruter](https://www.valdresbilruter.no) or Google Maps search
- **E-bike rental** makes it possible to drop off without transporting your own bike — see [bike rental in Valdres](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres)
- Arriving at [Beitostølen](/omrade/beitostolen)? Start with the [Fagernes to Beitostølen route](/ruter/fagernes-til-beitostolen) for a great warm-up ride

**Airports:**
- Oslo Gardermoen: 1.5 hours by car to Fagernes
- Leirin airport (Fagernes): small airport with charter traffic in summer

---

## From Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger

Valdres isn't just for Oslo locals. Here are the options from other cities:

**Bergen → Valdres:**
- **Train to Gol** (Bergen Line, approx. 3 hours), then bus/bike to Golsfjellet or further into Valdres
- **Car** via E16 Voss–Lærdal–Filefjell–Fagernes (approx. 5 hours) — spectacular drive over Filefjell
- See [The Bergen Line as a gateway to Valdres](/guider/bergensbanen-gol-inngangsport-valdres-sykkel)

**Trondheim → Valdres:**
- **Train to Lillehammer/Vinstra** (approx. 3.5–4 hours), then Valdresekspressen or cycle through Espedalen to [Mjølkevegen stage 1](/guider/mjolkevegen-etappe-1-vinstra-ruten-guide)
- **Car** via E6 south to Lillehammer, then Rv51 into Valdres (approx. 5 hours)

**Stavanger → Valdres:**
- Fly to Gardermoen + Valdresekspressen, or car via E134 Haugesund–Haukeli–E16 Valdres (6–7 hours)
- Cheapest: fly Oslo + bus. Fastest: fly + rental car

---

## E-bike battery and transport — the rules

E-bikes on trains and buses require a little extra planning:

- **Vy train:** E-bikes with a fixed battery under 25 kg are accepted. The battery **must remain on the bike** — you cannot carry it loose in your luggage
- **Valdresekspressen (bus):** E-bikes are accepted in the luggage compartment, but **check with the operator** when booking — some buses have weight limits
- **Flight:** E-bike batteries over 160 Wh are **prohibited** in the cabin and hold. Most e-bikes have 400–750 Wh batteries — this means you cannot fly with an e-bike battery. Rent an e-bike locally in Valdres instead via [bike rental](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres)

---

## Practical checklist

Before you depart:
- [ ] Book your bike space on Valdresekspressen or the train in advance
- [ ] Check your bike is accepted on the train (size, e-bike battery — see rules above)
- [ ] Book luggage transport on Mjølkevegen (if applicable)
- [ ] Check road status on Valdresflya: [vegvesen.no/trafikk](https://www.vegvesen.no/trafikk)
- [ ] Download route GPX from [valdres.no/sykkelturer](https://www.valdres.no/opplevelser/aktiviteter/sykling/sykkelturer)
- [ ] Consider renting an e-bike locally instead of transporting your own — simpler logistics

---

## Round trip vs one-way — plan your logistics

Most Valdres cyclists choose between two setups — and the logistics are completely different.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Round trip (car)", value: "Easiest", sub: "Park in Fagernes/Beitostølen, ride out and back. Zero coordination." },
{ label: "One-way (bus/train)", value: "Best experience", sub: "Cycle from A to B, take the bus back. Requires planning." },
{ label: "Combine car + bus", value: "Popular hybrid", sub: "Drive to Fagernes, cycle Mjølkevegen to Gol, train back to Oslo. Some collect the car the following weekend." },
  { label: "Car transport service", value: "Available", sub: "Some bike rental operators offer to drive your car from A to B. Ask when booking." }
]} columns={2} />

**Rule of thumb:** Round trips are stress-free — you end where you started. One-way trips offer better routes, but require checking bus times *before* booking accommodation.

**Mjølkevegen specific:** Most people cycle one-way (Vinstra → Gol or reverse). Luggage transport is included in many [cycling packages](/guider/sykkelpakker-valdres-mjolkevegen). Make sure you've arranged car transport or have someone to pick you up.

---

## Carpooling and travel companions — save money and CO₂

Valdres is perfect for carpooling — one car, multiple bikes.

- **Cycling clubs and friends:** One car with a roof rack (3–4 bikes) + one driver is cheapest. Split the fuel costs to approx. 200 kr per person return from Oslo
- **Tomilar.no and nabobil.no:** Need a car just to collect your bike after a one-way trip? Check car sharing services — often cheaper than a taxi from Fagernes to Gol
- **Valdres taxi with bike trailer:** Local taxi companies take bikes between starting points. Practical for groups parking at different points along a long-distance route
- **Bike on rental car:** Avis and Hertz have had seasonal offices in Fagernes. Check availability — roof racks can be ordered as an extra

**Environmental bonus:** Valdresekspressen and the Bergen Line are climate-smart choices. Train + bike is the most sustainable option — and you won't have to worry about parking.

---

## Flying to Valdres — step by step from Gardermoen

Arriving from abroad and landing at Oslo Gardermoen? Getting to Valdres is easier than you'd think — but requires some planning with a bike.

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Gardermoen → Fagernes", value: "Approx. 2.5 hours by car", sub: "Via E6 south + E16 west. Motorway all the way to Hønefoss." },
{ label: "Gardermoen → Oslo S", value: "19 min by Flytoget", sub: "Change to Valdresekspressen or the Bergen Line." },
{ label: "Car rental Gardermoen", value: "All major companies", sub: "Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar — pre-book a roof rack." },
  { label: "Bike in luggage", value: "Bike bag recommended", sub: "Airlines require padded packaging." }
]} columns={2} />

**Fastest option with your own bike:** Rental car from Gardermoen with roof rack (book extra equipment at time of reservation). Drive E6 south to Sandvika, then E16 west to Fagernes. Drop off the car in Fagernes or Beitostølen — some companies offer one-way rental for a surcharge.

**Cheapest option:** Flytoget to Oslo S (19 min, approx. 220 kr). Walk to Oslo Bus Terminal (5 min). Valdresekspressen to Fagernes (2.5 hours). Bike in the luggage compartment — book your space in advance.

**Without your own bike:** Flytoget to Oslo S → Valdresekspressen to Fagernes → [rent a bike at Intersport Fagernes](/guider/leie-sykkel-valdres). Simplest and cheapest for international visitors. No bike packaging, no excess baggage fees, no awkward transport.

**Bike as checked luggage — the rules:**
- Most airlines accept bikes as sports baggage (150–500 kr surcharge)
- Requirements: padded bike bag or hard case. Handlebars turned, pedals removed, tyres deflated
- SAS, Norwegian and Widerøe accept bikes — check your specific airline's terms
- Booking: add "sports equipment" when purchasing your ticket; do not show up without a prior reservation

**Tips for international cyclists:** Consider shipping your bike with BikeFlights or a similar freight service directly to your hotel in Valdres — saves you stress at the airport and during connections.

## Bike as luggage — packing and protection for train and bus

Your bike is worth thousands of kroner. Here's how to protect it during transport to Valdres.

### On Valdresekspressen (bus)

The bike goes in the luggage compartment beneath the bus. The driver will help, but you should:

- **Turn the handlebars** 90 degrees and secure with a zip tie or strap — reduces the width
- **Remove bottles and loose parts** — pump, tools and lights go in your bag
- **Pad the frame** with a towel or blanket where it might contact other items
- **Label your bike** with your name and phone number — buses make multiple stops
- **Do not lock your bike** in the luggage compartment — the driver needs access

### On Vy trains (Bergen Line to Gol)

The train has dedicated bike carriages with a hanging system:

- **Book your bike space** via vy.no — limited availability per departure
- **Hang the bike** on the wheel hook with the front wheel up
- **Remove bags and panniers** — they go in the overhead rack, not on the bike
- **E-bikes:** Accepted as long as the battery is fixed and total weight is under 25 kg. Loose batteries are not permitted in the passenger carriage

### Bike bag for flights and long-distance travel

If you're flying in, you'll need a bike bag:

<StatGrid stats={[
{ label: "Soft case (padded bag)", value: "Easiest to travel with", sub: "1–3 kg, foldable. Less protection — fine for direct flights." },
{ label: "Hard case (shell case)", value: "Best protection", sub: "8–12 kg, bulky. Necessary for connecting flights." },
{ label: "Cardboard box solution", value: "Budget option", sub: "Free bike box from a bike shop. Single use, decent protection." },
  { label: "Packing time", value: "30–45 min", sub: "Do it the evening before. Deflate tyres, turn handlebars, remove pedals." }
]} columns={2} />

**Checklist before packing:**
- [ ] Deflate the tyres (hold pressure in the cargo hold can burst inner tubes)
- [ ] Turn the handlebars and secure with tape or zip ties
- [ ] Remove the pedals (left = right-hand thread, right = left-hand thread)
- [ ] Protect the derailleur and disc brakes with padding or cardboard
- [ ] Put small parts (pedals, tools, quick links) in a ziplock bag in your carry-on
- [ ] Photograph your bike when packed — documentation in case of damage

**Pro tip:** Some bike shops in Oslo (e.g. Sykkelbyen, Syklisten) sell used bike boxes for a small fee. Call the day before and ask.
