What is the Mjølkevegen South Route?
The Mjølkevegen South Route is a 3-day gravel loop over Stølsvidda starting from Kamben Høyfjellshotell (950 m asl, Gol/Golsfjellet). Total 60 km: Day 2 Kamben→Gomobu (36 km, 600 m elevation), Day 3 Gomobu→Kamben (24 km, 400 m). Family-friendly on e-bikes from approx. age 8. Season: 15 June–September. Why the South Route?
Most cyclists ride Mjølkevegen as a linear route from Vinstra to Gol over 4–5 days. The South Route gives you the best of Stølsvidda in a compact weekend format — without needing a bus back to your car.
Four things that make the South Route unique:
-
Stølsvidda at its heart. The route crosses the very center of Mjølkevegen — the wide mountain plateaus where thousands of cows and goats graze freely, and where active summer farms still produce brown cheese and sour cream right in front of you.
-
Langestølen and Nøsen. Two stops legendary among local cyclists. Langestølen serves home-made waffles at a summer farm that has been in operation for generations. Nøsen is a yoga and mountain hotel with a trampoline, sauna, and a beautiful white-sand beach on Reinsenn lake.
-
Loop — your car waits. You start and end at Kamben. No bus, no transport logistics. Take the train from Oslo to Gol (2.5 hrs), taxi 20 minutes up to Kamben, start cycling the next morning.
-
Family-friendly. The terrain is gentle and manageable. With e-bikes, children from ages 8–10 can handle both days without problems.

3-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival at Kamben (no cycling)
Arrive at Kamben in the afternoon. Check in, explore the area, and enjoy dinner with panoramic views over Hallingdal from the hotel terrace.
Kamben is at 950 m — you're already in the mountains. Take a short evening walk or test ride on the gravel roads around the hotel. Charge your e-bike battery overnight.
Day 2 — Kamben → Gomobu (36 km, 600 m elevation)
Start: Kamben Høyfjellshotell (950 m)
End: Gomobu Fjellstue
Time: 4–6 hours (3–4 hours by e-bike)
This is the main day — the one that takes you into the heart of Stølsvidda. Start with breakfast at Kamben and allow plenty of time.
The route: From Kamben, follow gravel roads north towards Stølsvidda. The terrain rolls without steep climbs. You'll pass cows, goats and sheep grazing freely along the road — cycle slowly past them.
Stop 1 — Langestølen (approx. km 10–12):
One of Stølsvidda's most famous summer farms. Produces brown cheese and sour cream sold directly on site. Waffles with sour cream are mandatory. Allow 30–45 minutes here.
Stop 2 — Nøsen Yoga and Mountain Hotel (approx. km 18–20):
Nøsen is a modern mountain hotel with a yoga studio, sauna and — surprisingly — a trampoline. There is also a beautiful beach at Reinsenn, a shallow mountain lake with white sandy bottom, perfect for a midday swim. An exotic experience at 900 m. Café and meals available.
Stop 3 — Lisjordetstølen (approx. km 25):
Active summer farm with daily milking. Ask if you can watch the cows being milked — it's usually possible during summer months. One of the best places on Stølsvidda to experience living mountain dairy culture.
End — Gomobu Fjellstue (approx. km 36):
A classic mountain lodge in Mjølkevegen style. Hot food, good beer, and simple but comfortable rooms. Order dinner in advance — capacity is limited.
Day 3 — Gomobu → Kamben (24 km, 400 m elevation)
Start: Gomobu Fjellstue
End: Kamben Høyfjellshotell
Time: 3–4 hours (2–3 hours by e-bike)
A shorter day — perfect for enjoying the return journey without rushing. The route is partly new terrain and partly parallel to yesterday's path.
Stop — Valtjernet (approx. km 10):
A small mountain lake surrounded by bog and hills. There's a simple 60 m ascent to the viewpoint Valtjernknatten — well worth taking. Panoramic views over all of Stølsvidda and the mountains of Hemsedal.
Arrive at Kamben early afternoon. Bags packed and ready for the train back to Oslo.

E-bikes on the South Route
The South Route is one of the best e-bike options in Valdres for non-trained cyclists:
- 36 km day 2 and 24 km day 3 are well within a standard e-bike battery
- Elevation is gradual, never steep — motor assistance is used efficiently
- Children from 7–8 years can manage the days on a regular children's bike with some encouragement
- Bike rental available from Kamben Høyfjellshotell (+47 32 07 39 00) and in Gol town center
Charging: Kamben and Gomobu offer charging. Confirm with both places when booking.
Luggage transport
Gomobu Fjellstue (+47 61 35 77 10) can help arrange luggage transport between Kamben and Gomobu. Call ahead to arrange.
